Yuvraj to return

India are optimistic that Yuvraj Singh will return to the side later in the month to prepare for the World Cup.

He hasn’t played since the Champion’s Trophy, due to tearing knee ligaments. India will hope to have him back so he can take his place before the World Cup. They have two four match series at home, one against World Cup host West Indies and another against Sri Lanka.

Speaking to an Indian newspaper, Hindustan Times Yuvraj said: “I am about 90 to 95% fit. It’s just about getting some match practice now. Hopefully I can play three or four practice games, and then if all goes well declare myself fit and be available for selection.”

The left-hander will be an important component in India’s one day batting line up, especially considering their poor performances in the recent 4-0 series defeat against South Africa. His athletic fielding and part time spin could also come in handy.

The 25 year-old’s physio, Mithun Joshi has assessed his condition and compiled a report for the BCCI. In it he writes: “Yuvraj is in the final phase of his rehabilitation. He has been doing light fielding, functional agility and netting. I expect him to return to light Twenty20 match-style play on 19 January.”
