Rest in peace Walter Hadlee

Former New Zealand captain Walter Hadlee and father of Sir Richard Hadlee, Barry Hadlee, and Dayle Hadlee who all played for New Zealand died earlier today at the age of 91.

Walter played 11 Test matches for New Zealand making his debut in 1937 before the start of World War Two, and resumed his career after the end of the war, and played his final Test in 1951.

He was known to be a very skillful player who played classic off-drives. He ended his career with an average of 30.16 in Tests and 40.44 in First Class cricket.

Walter went on to become a chartered accountant, and was included in the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame in 1995.

In a statement released by Sir Richard Hadlee, he said “We deeply appreciate the public support that we have received in recent weeks and ask that we now be given time to come together as a family.”

“This is a difficult time for the family and we do request privacy.”

“Dad will be laid to rest at a family funeral next week.”

“A public memorial service will be held at Christchurch Boys High School at 11am on October 14 for those who wish to acknowledge Dad’s innings of a lifetime and his contribution to sport, business and the community,” he said.
