India & Sri Lanka cancel series

The ODI series between Sri Lanka and India has been cancelled after rain washed out the first two matches.

Just 22 balls were possible in the scheduled three match series, which was arranged after South Africa pulled out of the original tri-series due to safety concerns. The series was to act as a warm-up for the Champion’s Trophy for the two sides, and they will now have to either go without or arrange alternative warm-up matches.

Sri Lanka cricket media manager Samantha Alagama explained the decision: “After consultions with the Indian board, and bearing in mind the weather conditions, it has been decided to cancel the series and stage it at a later date, it will be played some time in 2007, most likely after the World Cup. That exact dates and itinerary will be decided after consulting with the Indian and South African cricket boards.”
