Chappell a Coaching Contender?

With John Buchanan’s tenure as Australian coach drawing to an end there is much speculation over who his replacement will be. The two considered to be the most likely contenders to take over the reins after the 2007 World Cup were Centre of Excellence coach Tim Nielsen and Sri Lanka coach and former ODI all-rounder Tom Moody, but Cricket Australia director Allan Border has revealed that former captain and current India coach Greg Chappell is also in the running.

Border said they had “a lot of good candidates for a tough job” and made specific mention of Nielsen, Moody, Chappell and the vastly experienced Dav Whatmore.

Chappell has brushed this aside, saying he hadn’t been following the story at all. But at the same time he did not deny that he would be available to take the job.

Chappell made a controversial start to his term as Indian coach with a public fallout with then captain Saurav Ganguly, but his popularity has increased since that shaky beginning and he has had some good success with the Indian side.

Prior to that of course he was a hugely successful Australian captain and scored 7110 Test runs at an average of 53.86 with 24 centuries in his 87 matches.
