ICC give Gibbs and Boje hope

The International Cricket Council have given Herschelle Gibbs and Nicky Boje hope of playing in the Champions Trophy later this year in India by saying they would help to ensure they can tour India without the fear of being arrested.

Boje and Gibbs haven’t toured India with South Africa since 2000 after a match fixing scandal broke.

Indian police have failed to give the players or the South African Cricket Board any assurances that if Boje and/or Gibbs entered the country that they wouldn’t be taken in for questioning.

Former captain Hansie Cronje admitted to match fixing in the same scandal and was given a life ban prior to dying in a plane crash in 2002.

The head of the ICC’s cricket operations Dave Richardson said he would try and facilitate a process with the Indian Cricket Board and Indian police if approached by the South African Cricket Board where Boje and Gibbs could tour within the fear of being arrested.

The Champions Trophy starts on October 7 and runs until November 5 with the matches being played in Mumbai, Mohali, Ahmedabad and Jaipur.
