Australasian World Cup Bid

Despite the fact that over the weekend it was revealed by Pakistan Cricket Board’s chairman Shaharyar Khan that India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh would host the World Cup in 2011 without any challenge from Australia, it was announced today that Australia will proceed with a rival bid.

The 1992 tournament was hosted in Australia and New Zealand, and Cricket Australia’s chairman said a bid with the same two countries was likely again, although if necessary Australia would be willing to go alone.

The 2011 tournament is the first to be decided from nations bidding against one another, with previous tournaments being awarded to host nations on a rotation basis.
