Paceman pleased with debut

Australian paceman Mitchell Johnson will certainly never forget his one-day international debut for Australia.

The Queensland Bulls left armer was a surprise selection for Australia’s third one-day match against New Zealand on Saturday, and played his part in one of the most remarkable one day matches ever played between the two countries.

Having set the hosts 332 to win in the match, Johnson and his teammates would have been confident of victory but the Kiwis chased down the target with an over to spare in spectacular fashion.

Johnson, who took 0-64 off his nine overs, said the manner of the game would live long in his memory.

‘It was definitely a great experience to be able to be involved in such a very high-scoring game,’ he said.

‘There was a lot of big hitting, it was good fun and I really enjoyed it.

‘It probably wasn’t the best game for bowlers but I thought I did okay in the situation, I was a little disappointed I didn’t take any wickets and my pace wasn’t great but I think that was just nerves and if I get the opportunity again it’ll be different.’

Having been called up to replace Brett Lee on Thursday and with the game on Saturday, Johnson admitted his short journey to New Zealand had been a bit of a whirlwind but he enjoyed the experience.

He said he was now keen to bowl well for Queensland and force selectors to give him another opportunity in Australian colours.

‘I would definitely love to get the opportunity again, it was a great learning experience for me and there’s a few things I can take back for my next game for Queensland against Western Australia,’ he said.
