Vaughan out of first test
Tom Bowman |Michael Vaughan is to miss the first test on Saturday due to a knee injury picked up in the recent warm up match against Pakistan A.
In his absence, Marcus Trescothick will be captain for only the second time in tests.
Trescothick had the following to say about losing Vaughan for the first test. ‘Michael has a superb record as captain and to lose him for the first Test is a major blow. But we can take strength from the fact that we have played some outstanding cricket over the past 18 months and we are all up for the challenge on Saturday.
For me personally, it is always a great honour to lead your country. I have fond memories of doing the job before against New Zealand at Lord’s in 2004 and I am happy to take on the responsibility again.’
Vaughan’s injury isn’t likely to put him out of the other two tests but it is a re-occuring injury. Vaughan missed the New Zealand test last year with the same injury when debutant Andrew Strauss nearly became the first Englishman to score hundreds in both innings on debut. England went on to win that test by seven wickets.
Vaughan’s place in the eleven is likely to be taken by Ian Bell.
