Waqar may extend coaching role

Ex-bowling legend Waqar Younis, who is contracted to act as the Pakistani’s bowling coach for their upcoming tour to India, said that he would be interested in performing the role on a long term basis.

Waqar, 34, stated his intentions while speaking to the BBC, saying, “If it is only for the India series, it will be waste of time.” Pakistani captain, Inzamam-ul-Haq, was all for Waqar’s idea, commenting, “I support Waqar. He is not a magician who can correct things in a week.”

Inzamam also added that Waqar’s obvious role would be to help out the younger fast bowlers, “When we had Wasim [Akram] and Waqar in the team, the new bowlers could learn a lot from them while playing with them. But now there is no senior bowler in the team, so we need an experienced fast bowler like Waqar as our bowling coach. We had many victories in the 1990s and that’s all because of two guys – Wasim and Waqar. They taught the whole world about reverse swing – that was our main weapon. I would like this weapon to be passed on to the juniors now.”

Pakistan’s tour to India is scheduled to begin on the Thursday, March 3 with a match against the Board President’s XI. The much-awaited series will involve 3 Tests and 5 one-day internationals.
