Nash joins selection panel

Former Black Caps all-rounder Dion Nash has been contracted as a member of the four-man national selection panel.

He joins selection manager Sir Richard Hadlee, Glenn Turner and national coach John Bracewell.

Despite being only out of the game for a few years, Nash, 33, said that he was excited by the new challenges that the appointment would bring.

He told the New Zealand Herald, “I’m looking forward to working with some pretty strong-minded guys… I’m pretty opinionated. I realised if I didn’t do something [in cricket] soon my interest might start to wane.”

Nash remained confident that his younger perspective would bring positives to the selection panel. Of comments that relationships with players might impede on his decision-making, he said that only Stephen Fleming and Daniel Vettori remained from the test teams that he played with.

Known for his sheer competitiveness and determination to win throughout his playing days, Nash played 32 tests and 81 one-day internationals.

Nash took 92 test wickets at 28.48. His best haul included 11 for 169 against England at Lord’s in 1994.

He was plagued by injury frustrations that eventually saw his retirement in 2002. Nash’s first class debut was for Northern Districts in 1990.
