NZ/Aus to bid for 2011 World Cup

New Zealand Cricket Chief Executive Martin Snedden confirmed today that he is in early negotiations with Australia in preparing to bid for the 2011 World Cup.

Snedden announced that a formal proposal was still a long way off but initial talks had started between the two boards.

New Zealand and Australia last hosted the World Cup in 1992 which saw Pakistan beat England in the final.

Snedden said if successful the competition would be run the same way as the 1992 World Cup with a shared split of the preliminary matches.

After the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies the ICC cycle of taking the tournament around the globe is due to be staged in Australasia which is in their favour.

However what goes against the region is the huge sums of television revenue that come from the Asian region where four of the 10 test playing nations are based.
