I think the South African side from February 1911 till the end of 1913 must be the worst in performance over a protracted (three year period). Here are the results of the ten matches they played in this time.

1. Feb 1911 - Lost by 530 runs to Aus
2. Mar 1911 - Lost by 7 wkts to Aus
3. May 1912 - Lost by innings and 88 runs to Aus
4. Jun 1912 - Lost by innings and 62 runs to Eng
5, Jul 1912 - Lost by innings and 174 runs to Eng
6. Jul 1912 - Lost by 10 wkts to Aus

7. Aug 1912 - Drew with Aus. Well Played !!!
8.Aug 1912 - Lost to Eng by 10 wkts
9. Dec 1913 - Lost to Eng by innings and 157 runs
10. Dec 1913 - Lost to Eng by innings and 91 runs

In the triangular series of 1912 their batsmen averaged 15.4 per innings over 6 tests. Nourse was the best with an average of 20.0 !

Their main bowlers were Pegler, Nourse, Faulkner, Llewyllyn and Schwarz and they had bowling averages of 47.9, 62.2, 57.1, 90.0 and 126.0 respectively

The team doesnt sound that bad on paper since they had Nourse, Faulkner, Herbie Taylor and Schwarz. But as a team performance this must rate amongst the worst ever.

The worst ever Australian XI would have to be when they had to choose their third choice players when the Packer Circus was going on.

This would be a fairly scarey England team

1. Wilf Slack(R.I.P)
2. Jon Terry
3. Allan Wells
4. James Whittaker
5. Paul Parker
6. Chris Cowdrey - capt
7. Bruce French
8. Geoff Cope
9. Syd Lawrence
10. Geoff Thomas
11. Mike Smith

Ouch, a lot of County stalwarts in that team but it looks very weak at Test level.

Paul Terry, surely? And wasn't Geoff Thomas a Crystal Palace footballer who managed a couple of games under Graham Taylor in the early 90's? Greg Thomas from the mid80's maybe.

Beyond that, you've found a lot of one-cap wonders - Wells, Whittaker, Parker & Smith - and most of the others didn't play too often. Bruce French was good keeper actually, although his batting wasn't anything special.

Yup, that's a pretty good time to find an all-time-bad England XI - at the end of an Ashes thrashing and when loads of players have just got banned for signing up for Gatting's "rebel" tour to SA.

There's some pretty uninspiring XI's from our tour of Pakistan in 1977/78. Botham was injured, Gower hadn't get appeared and we'd lost Greig, Knott, Woolmer, Underwood Amiss & Snow to Packer.

Oddly enough, the worst performances haven't always come from the obviously worst lineups. Christchurch in 1983/84 springs immediately to mind.

You're right of course, I must have still been depressed over our awful performances in the Football World Cup.8-) I dread to think what I'll write if the Cricket World Cup goes as badly as expected.:-O

Yet you look at it and in Gooch, Gower, Smith, Russell and Gower there's some good players.

The bowlings a bit weak though, as is David "New Botham mark 12" Capel at 6!
