Wooden Cup/VB Cup - Reports

Reports
Game 1- Versus Victoria.
A great start to the Wooden Cup campaign. In the tougher of the two groups a win against Victoria was needed. Most batsman contributed with Ashwall Prince top scoring with 45 and showing some much needed form. Other notable efforts were R Nichol 39, R Lynch 33 and C Harriss 38. A total of 215 was going to be competitive.
The bowling was excellent with Chris Harriss being the pick taking 4-27. Allan Donald, Stuart Thomas and Chris Martin all took 2 whilst keeping proceedings very tight. MOM- Chris Harriss.
Game 2- Versus Colts.
This is the game that manager Ian Markus really really reallly really wants to win. Against the very strong Colt's outfit, the Auckland side felt like they were in with a chance after winning their first game. All batsman contributed to Aucklands total of 175, but too many starts and not enough people getting going was the problem. Sunil Joshi made the only real contribution of note being that of 41 of 46. Ash Noffke bowled well to take 3-20.
Auckland knew if they bowled well they had a chance but it wasn't to be. The extremely powerful Colt's side didn't lose a wicket as they passed the total in the 27th over. Some really impressive batting from Sharath and Shewag both scoring well and at a wonderful rate.
Game 3- Versus Tasmania.
This was the do or die affair for the two teams and Auckland made good use of a good track batting first. Anderson 38, Horne 57 getting some much needed runs, C Street the young rookie all rounder impressive at 3 with 49, and Chris Harris also getting to 57. Auckland felt confident with 259.
The bowling never really got going with all South Australian player's making themeselves felt. R Stratton was the star, as everyone else supported he made a wonderful 101 off only 88 balls which allowed south australia to pass the total in the 44th over and end Auckland's campaign.
Overall Ian Markus is very happy as this was the hard group. The top teams competed and to come out with a win against the eventual winners was pleasing. Also finishing above Colts :duh:

Another dissapointing tournament from the dissapointing Somerset team. The new manager 'masterblaster' could not be more upset and angry with the results.
The wooden cup started out well for Somerset but got worse.
PS: I may have the order of these games around the wrong way!

Game 1: Somerset v Canterbury
Somerset batted first and compiled a good total of 261/9 in 50 overs. G Blewett and P Bowler played particularly well as they made 86 and 74 respectively. While A Caddick made a quickfire 40 down the order. Agarkar of Canterbury was the best bowler on the day. Canterbury fell away for 154 all out as Wilson and Adams took 3 wickets each.
Game 2: Surrey vs Somerset
Somerset batting first again crashed after a good start to be 146 all out, S Mushtaq took 6/26. Surrey comfortably won as they were 150/3.
Game 3: Worcs v Somerset
Worcs batted first and made a steady 197/4 in 50 overs, Somerset thought they could win easily as Wilson, Caddick and Adams bowled economically, but Somerset's batting once again was the weak link in the team as they capitulated to 144 all out.
Managers Impressions: Overall another dissapointing series after winning one game, M Wood, Worthington and Afridi were the worst performers, with M Wood winning the MUP Award of Somerset (Most Useless Player Award), in the coming weeks more team changes will have to be made until the right combination is found.
The bowling was very good, restricting the teams to meager totals, but the batting was dissapointing.
Stars of the team: G Blewett, A Adams, P Wilson, A Caddick, all these players were outstanding, its a pity the rest of this team are sub-standard.
Most Valuable Player: A Caddick

Canterbury Reports
Well what i didnt want to happen, happened. So whats was it that i didnt want to happen? Well the answer is that the opposition decided to play near full strength teans. Which meant that my 'experimental' side (which is a side made up of my 11 weakest and out of form players) lost all 3 matches.
Cant v Worcs
Did a pretty good job restricting Worcs to just 204 with Kirby, Mills and Cornelius bowling economical and taking wickets. Rookie White also impressed conceding just 18 off 9 overs. With only 4 players who avg above 30 my batting was pretty weak and it showed being all out for 150. Roberts was good as he made 53 no, while White also did good with 23. Astle also made a quick 30.
Cant v Somer
Somerset batted first and scored 261 with Agarkar impressing with 4-29 off 9 overs. Astle also did well with 1-17 off 5. Batting was poor again making only 154 with rookie Schofield scoring 46. The rest was pretty ordinary.
Cant v Surrey
Well Cant made their highest score of 207 in this match with Schofield making 61 while the rest wasnt that great. Bowling wise it was shocking with Surrey making the target in 40 overs. No good performances here.
The Positives
- Agarkar taking 4-29
- Schofield looks like a decent batsmen for an all rounder.
- Astle also put in a solid all round performance as usual.
- The fact that the majority of these players wont make a start in my od side unless there are a lot of injuries.
The Negatives

NSW GET A LESSON OF THERE OWN
well nsw suffered a massive blow in the vb cup. last years winners where absolutely demolished in the vb cup game by glamorgan, winning the toss and sending nsw in , nsw was in the mood for a big score, but loosing 2 quick wickets and one of them being the star studded m bevan, nsw where 2- 0 . b lara hit a solid 43*(36). the only other batsmen was b haddin who got 16. nsw all out for 73 in a comp that they have rarely struggled to get massive scores. defending 73 with out star leggy s macgill was always going to be tuff, and nsw went down in a suprising loss by 7 wickets.mom w akram was extremely happy, he stated we knew it was going to be tuff and they are last years chamops and have dominated allready this year but we backed ourselves on this deck and once bevan was gone for nothing we knew we where in with a sloid chance. we just played well so yer its good.
we intervied bugs malone after the game and he had this to say,
we got done on the day by a team that was more enthusiastic, wanted the win more than what we did, and played better than what we did. when you have such a successfull side, everyone wants to knock you off the top purch, however we really got a cricketing lesson today and it just shows that even the good sides can play bad know and then. i was really looking forward to lifting the vb cup again this year but look its not going to happen , so know i woill really have to get the boys to focus on the one day and the 4 day league.

The Colts had a poor tornament, we came out of a tough group with just the one win vs Auckland.
Good Points:
K Vaas did ok for his debut for the colts with 7 overs 1/22, and 4/79 (10)
Sharaths 86 and Shewags 89 in their unbroken 177 partnership vs Auckland
Noffke also bowled well 7 overs 3/20, 3/54
Bad points:
The middle order madde virtually no runs for the torney
bowling was poor most of the time ffrom other bowlers
Good Points:

The punters curse has struck again. Who would have thought that one of division 2's strugglers would take apart one of the heavy weights.
Wasim Akram took 2 wickets with his first 3 balls to have NSW reeling. Parkin took a hat trick late in the innings as only Lara 43* and Haddin 16 looked like scoring. NSW bowled out for 73. Akram 3/22, Parkin 3/16 and Klusener 2/13 starred.
The chase went smoothly enough as Glamorgan lost only 3 wickets and took just 9 overs to score the runs. Newell 30 and Ganguly 33* went well. Figures you may never see again follow: McGrath 0/12 off 1, Lee 0/15 off 2, Warne 2/30 off 2.
The grog flowed and flowed and rightly so. What a night.
Again to all the punters who lost a sh!t load of money (including you GB, $20000 was it?) I hope you choke on your porridge. We'll probably get flogged in the Q-finals.

LANCASHIRE v WP
Lancashire batted first and put together a modest 141/9 after recovering from the awkward position of 36/6 and 80/7.
R.Dravid held the innings together with a magnificent innings of 69.
The WP bowlers performed well with C.Willoughby (1/22), S.Akhtar (4/24), A.Dawson (2/25) and J.Kallis (2/25) all impressing.
In reply WP got through to 32/1 before collapsing to be all out for 45 in just the ninth over!
M.Mendis (3/0) and C.Schofield (2/6) were the most successful of the Lancashire bowlers.
A win to Lancashire by 96 runs.

The game against Auckland was very impressive on a few accounts. Mark Harrity taking 4/57 in tough conditions for the bowlers started us off well, then the Innings of French 51(53) Stratton 101*(88) and Oliver 43(57) all showed that the young talent in SA is beginning to blossom...
A comfortable 5 wicket win with R.Stratton the MOM

This game was expected to be tough, fizzled out to an easy victory to SA, batting 1st we hit a solid 245 with no real standout, only 40's from Jenkins, Harris and Samuels...
In reply the Bowling was lethal, Harrity (1/15) Smith (4/14) Oliver (1/14) and Miller (2/34) destroyed the Colts line-up to destroy their hopes of Wooden Cup glory..
MOM M.Smith cementing his spot in the OD team for a while....

The battle of the Aussies in the Wooden Cup and unfortunatley SA forgot it was on, they didn't show up to play and the re-arranged team was bundled out for a meagre 89..
With the Ball Watson and Smith bowled well but with such a small total there was no hope...
Semi Final
vs Surrey
The Semi final against Surrey was goin to be a tough encounter with Marc having his side fired up for 1st Division blood, but after winning the toss and batting SA piled on the runs, Jenkins 103(81) French 99(97) Lehmann 70*(60) and Oliver 41(24) all made the scorers(and the bowlers) work hard, SA posting a HUGE 4/353...
In reply the bowlers defended well with Smith again the standout with 3/43 also recieved good support from Stratton and Oliver to give SA a 58 run win and a spot in the Final and a chance at revenge on the Victorians...
The Final
vs Victoria
Winning the toss and batting 1st a top order collapse saw SA struggling at 4/29 but Michael Miller laid his claims again that he is the most valuable SA allrounder with a brilliant 85(91) but with no real support SA were bundled out for 185...
The chase was kept tight with Harrity taking 2/19 from 9, Bond 0/22 from 7 and Smith 0/25, but the Vics took a liking to Miller who was taken for 67 from his 8 which gave them a comfortable 7 wicket win and the inagural Wooden Cup...
Summary
Overall a pleasing tournament with a few players standing out..
*M.Smith secured himself a one day bowling spot for at least the next few games, probably replacing Shane Bond..
*R.Stratton showed glimpses of form which saw him the leading rookie in last years Academy..
*M.Miller continued his good form...
*Both Rookies performed well, in particular K.French...
Dissapointments...
*S.Bond likely to be relieved of OD duties for a while.
