Is this iconic record still on for Alastair Cook? It was actually looking a decent shout a few years back when he had that purple patch around 2010-11. Now seems very much an outside chance.

He's now 30 years & 229 days and has currently amassed 9223 test runs, so requires a further 6699 runs to surpass Tendulkar.

He really needs to play until at least 36-37 to achieve it imo, and even then it's a big ask requiring close to a 1000 runs a year on average.

One thing in Cook's favour is the fact England generally play more test cricket than anyone else these days, so it's not crazy to think he could average 13 tests a year for the next 5-6 years which would mean another 70-80 tests to score the 6699 runs.

Given he needs so much to go his way, along with the personal desire to want to play that long, form, & politics amongst other things, I predict he'll fall short by over 1000 runs at this stage.

Anyone give him much of a chance?

Yeah, but very much an outside way. A triple hundred in the 5th test would certainly help get things a little more on track ;)

Wasn't he close to getting the sack a while ago? No way is he going to make 1000 runs a year for the next 6 years.

If he averages about 50 for about 5/6 more years then who knows. However all it takes is one bad summer for him to be sacked as captain. That would also rely on him keeping injury free.

That's roughly 85 to 95 runs per Test.

Nope.

The normal awards that everyone else has
Indian Board (ICC) will stop this, somehow.

Could be foul play afoot if he gets to 15000 ish.

Doubtful. Loads of things could go wrong.

The idea he's ever been close to being dropped in the last 6 years is nonsense though. One bad series to be sacked? No.

reckon anyone will pass it in the next 30 years?
I'm 100% sure someone will. Tendulkar's test run tally as impressive as it is, isn't really that intimidating a record if you think about it. His ODI run record will be tougher to beat imo. The gap between him and second is pretty massive IIRC.

If not Cook, Root's about the only one I can think might have an outside chance. I'm not convinced enough Test cricket will be played enough in the future with the exception of England & Australia.

Quite sad a great young player like Williamson may not play enough tests to get to 10,000 runs.
