Why do people like Beaches?

Bette Midler is obviously a talent, but for me this 1988 tear-jerker just repeats the standard tropes of friendship made, lost then found. Not sure why so many people like it.

Yikes, I was looking to post in a beach thread and also in the weather thread. I got stuck on the first result after I typed in Beaches in the search engine.
