OP said no Bradman. So Ponting comes in for him, and Border comes in for Miller to balance out the batting. Would make some other minor personal changes like Gibbs for Holding, Cummins for Lindwall and Simpson for Hayden; but most definitely Haynes isn't making into the WI ATG team over Conrad Hunte, Roy Fredericks, Frank Worrell (a bit unorthodox, but he has opened the innings and is my choice) and even probably Chris Gayle....

It's close, but Headley, Richards, Lara, Sobers and I rate Greenidge above Hayden and Simpson.
I rate Greenidge similarly to Hayden, and Simpson is a clear step well above the next opening option for Windies.

Same as me but I am split on Compton and Barrington.
I thought so when I was a kid but nah.

Barrington 50.71 @ home, 69.18 away
Compton 60.04 @ home, 36.88 away

Both played 131 innings, Barrington scored 999 more runs, 3 more tons, 7 more 50’s, same amount of n.o’s, Barrington 41.1 SR, Comtpon 41.2 SR.

Compton’s peer rating is much higher but he really doesn’t have much going for him apart from that.

I'm opening Worrell, so?
Considering Worrell has a comparable opening record to Barry Richards, yes Simpson is multiple steps above him as an opener. (even just taking him as an overall batsman, Simpson > Worrell)

You think Simpson is a better batsman than Sir Frank Worrell?

See, in theory this is what an English XI should look like.

In practice though, you’re sacrificing your biggest strength (especially in this direct comparison - your batting depth) for an extra bowler who is nowhere near the level of any of SA’s attack.

Whether we choose to include Procter or not, the attack is going to have at least 3 ATG pacers + Tayfield.

At best England can have 2 ATG pacers (if we consider Barnes pace) + Laker, and a borderline guy clearly a tier below SA’s worst option
