Which is more important to winning games, batting consistency or bowling consistency? Let's assume the rest of the lineup is simple average test quality.

Viv and McGrath.

Viv even if less consistent than Tendulkar is made up for McGraths day in day out consistency and his own capacity to take away the game with his knocks and have the occasional awesome series. McGrath will enhance the potency of the entire bowling attack with his pressure.

Steyn can win you games by his lonesome but will lose you games. He is more dependent on the support he gets I feel. Tendulkar scores just enough to keep you competitive but not more than that.

I think the gap between Sachin and Viv is almost non existent while I think there's a gap between Steyn and McGrath so going Viv/McG

No gap maybe in overall output between Sachin and Viv but how they score is different.

With Sachin you will have a more consistent flow of series but much less really outlier high spikes that you would get with Viv.

By the same token aren't you getting more outlier high spikes with Steyn

I'll say Sachin has a higher output by less than half a run, maybe like 0.2 runs on Average, maybe like 0.1 more realistically tbh.
