A successful qualification for world No. 278 Jack Loughman and fellow FR CWLander Pierre Rose as both eased into the main draw. Loughman did not drop a set en route to qualification; conceeding five games in his first two matches, before a 7-6(5), 6-2 win over local veteran Gianni Grandi. Rose had it a bit tougher as he overcame a scare in the first round to scrape past Niccoló Colombo 0-6, 6-4, 6-3, but found his rhythm from there and capped it off with a 6-2, 6-3 win over fifth seed Emilio Crispi. He will also team up with partner Rick Langley in the doubles, with 'The Panther' on the verge of a seeding after his Salinas win.

Season II Brasil Open - Singles

DR CWLand's Jarkko Maxum is one of two CWLanders drawn in Costa do Sauípe this week, and fights a tough first round clash with local and World No. 55 Roberto Santos. Santos started off his clay season in Chile last week by winning over compatriot (and the man he partnered to win the doubles tournament) Felipe Menon before suffering a shock loss to then World No. 118 Michael De Kinsele. If he wins that, it gets even tougher as his likely second round opponent is the in form fourth seed Antonio Bachunelli who recently made the fourth round of the Australian Open.

It looks much better for World No. 16 and second seed Randy Smeltz as he begins against the Czech Republic's Václav Zeman. Despite many ranking Zeman as a big prospect over a year ago, he has rarely featured on the PTA circuit and last week lost 6-1, 6-4 in the second round to Björn Donaldson in Johannesburg. He was on the alternate lists in Rotterdam and Costa do Sauípe, and earned entry here thanks to a late withdrawal. Looking further on, a possible quarter final match up with Santiago champion Sergio Joaquín awaits and a semi final with third seed Diego Hurtado on his home continent.
