Week 13 Reports (Round 5 FC)

Graham

3rd Umpire
LANCASHIRE host SA

Lancashire batted first and were dismissed for a disappointing 212 all out.
After the top order fell away at 85/5 with only M.Ramprakash (37) contributing, it was left to M.Mendis (44) and J.Modanagopal (42) to add a little respectability.
Unsurprisingly, most of the SA bowlers finished with useful figures – R.Stratton (14-4-58-3), W.Singh (9-2-21-2), M.Harrity (13-4-29-2) and A.Kumble (13-4-43-2).

In reply, SA went through to 223/6 at which stage it looked as though their lead would be minimal. However, R.Stratton (125) combined with A.Kumble (44) to add 106 for the seventh wicket. The innings folded quickly upon Stratton’s dismissal and SA were all out for 336, a handy first innings lead of 124 runs. Other batsmen to contribute were V.Laxman (47) and M.Jenkins (37)
A.Dale (30-10-79-5) and M.Pushpakumara (19-3-60-4) bowled superbly for the home side.

A big effort was required by Lancashire in their second innings and the batsmen obliged as they racked up 458 all out.
A.Schiller (168) led the way with support from J.Modanagopal (65), M.Ramprakash (61), K.Baumgarner (37) and M.Mendis (36).
S.Bond was the pick of the bowlers this time round with figures of 22-1-65-3. M.Harrity also picked up three wickets, but at much greater expense.

SA were left with a difficult fourth innings chase of 337 to win, but against all odds they did it!
Led by M.Jenkins (113), V.Laxman (92no) and D.Lehmann (62), the first wicket put on 137 runs and the second wicket 123 runs to put SA at 260/2. The rest was plain sailing and Lancashire are now really in the poo in the Division One FC competition with outright wins required in both of their last two games needed to have any hope at all of avoiding relegation.
A.Dale (33-7-113-3) did not receive the backup he required from his fellow bowlers with the much vaunted twin spin attack of C.Schofield and M.Pushpakumara failing to fire in the fourth innings.

Warwickshire Vs. Kent

Warwickshire with only the one victory in the FC needed a victory in this match to have any chance of reaching staying in division two.

As usual the Warwickshire bowling line up struggled for the exception of Pollock and Bulbeck. Smashed around by another top knock from who made 148. Eventually Kent amassed 461 AO. A daunting challenge for Wawrickshire's batsmen.

Warwickshires top order couldn't get a partnership going and with the score at 198/5 following on seamed a real prospect. Enter Saunders. Saunders racked up 81 and good support from Pollock, Sriram, Bulbeck and Lawson, as the lower chipped in to make a match of it. The best Kent bowler was Hutton who picked up 4/104.

Kent went after quick runs and smashed Warwickshire bowling all around the ground. In what was a friendly declaration at 234/4 after just 58 overs, setting Warwickshire 305 for victory off a minimum of 80 overs.

Warwickshire got stuck in, but after a firery opening from Jayasuriya and Fernando, the run rate dropped and with the constant fall of wickets Warwickshire weren't able to get at the score going.Eventually they feel just 15 short with the score on 289/7 after 81 overs Manjrekar scored top scored with 95. A gutsy fight, but it wont be enough for them to play division two four day cricket now. There is still slim hope of a top three finish in the four day competition so that where everything will be consentrated now. But if I were older enough I bet, I would put my money on Warwickshire being a part of the third division season.

BRING ON NEXT SEASON

ACT Versus Guyana
Guyana won the toss and as any sensible team would do on a pitch like that decided to bat first. It was always going to be an interested game as both teams were making their debuts in World Club Cricket.
Guyana started strongly before loing the wicket of Rickman for 17 when the score was 31. Francis left as quick as he came in, out for just 2 and the score was 2/34. Sarwan and Haniff combined for a strong 3rd wicket partnership of 60 in very quick time. wickets fell at regular intervals to see Guyana dismissed for 228 in just the 42nd over. Gonsalves and Sarwan were both run out and had it not been for some poor fielding their easily could have been 2 or 3 more, something both teams will have to work on at training during the week there.
Kent french with 4/55 was the best of the bowlers, Mann 2/29 and Hatton 2/56 also bowled quite well.
Maxwell and Jeffrey came out swinging like a rusty gate but unfortunately for both they were hitting them like school boys. Both were caught on the deep 3rd man boundary and should be very disapointed with their innings. Vice Captain for this match Michael dawn cam in at number 3 and consolidated well. scoring at a run a ball for the majority of his innings. Dawn eventually made 121(125)* in what was a dominant display. Cade Brown with a patient 35 saw ACT to a match winning position, before a couple of late wickets got Guyana back into the match, however a 9th wicket stand of 50* bewteen Matt Ramage and Dawn got ACT to victory with 18 balls to spare. The Eastlake leg spinner contributed just 4 runs to the innings but it may be the difference between him getting a contract for season 3 or having to and work night shifts at the local woolworths.
All in all a good start to WCC for the Comets who will be looking to build on this win when they meet Jamaica in a 4 day game next weekend.

Rik

Cricketer Of The Year
On what looked like a difficult pitch Karachi won the toss and surprisingly batted. Mashonaland, however, decided to take an unorthodox approach by picking 4 Spinners in the final XI, with Off-Spinner Seager and Left Arm Spinner Dirk Viljoen opening the bowling. It was Vijloen who started the rot by bowling Bin Nasir with his 1st ball of the 2nd over of the innings, for a Golden Duck and gaining honourary membership to the primary club in the process. This brought in Iqbal. In a double change, Captain Andy Petal brought Gus MacKay and his brother Tim Petal into the attack. MacKay, bowling his Medium Fast-Seamers then removed Ali who had struggled to cope with the slow pitch, for a 19 ball 8, and Petal, bowling fastish Left Arm Spin, chipped out Kabir (for a slow 6 off 21 balls) and Masroor (10 off 18). Javed (31 off 37) joined Iqbal after the fall of Masroor and added 68, with young Iqbal looking very composed. Javed then charged at Tim Petal and was stumped by Petal's brother Andy and a superb run out by the Keeper ran out Maqbool (2 off 4). Leg-Spinner Brian Murphy then had Moin Khan (11 off 24) caught by Viljoen then Viljoen had Ahmed (5 off 6) caught by Butterworth and Nawab (17 off 28) caught behind before last man Kaneria hit his 1st ball straight back to the bowler and slogged the last ball of the innings for 6 leaving Iqbal tragically unbeaten on 99 off 140 balls. Kaneria ended up with 6 not out off just 2 deliveries. Karachi ended on 208 for the loss of 9 Wickets. Seager after opening the bowling ended up with 10-1-55-0, Viljoen with superb figures of 10-3-31-3, MacKay with 10-3-37-1, Tim Petal, who ripped the heart out of the Karachi middle order, had figures of 10-1-36-3 and Murphy with 10-1-46-1.

Mashonaland openers Andy Petal and Trevor Gripper then walked to the wicket to begin the run chase. Gripper was the 1st to go, stumped off young Leggie Kaneria for a 5 ball 0 as Karachi copied Mashonaland's tactics by opening the bowling with a spinner. Gavin Rennie came in and knocked the ball around until Maqbool got one to nip in to Andy Petal to trap him LBW for a 35 ball 8. This was by no means a classic innings by Petal and more will be expected from him in future matches. Petal was then replaced by his brother Tim Petal at the wicket. They took the score up to 60 before Nawab had Rennie caught by Bin Nasir for 34 off 51 balls. Ryan Butterworth (23 off 39) then added 59 with Petal before Maqbool had him caught by Javed, but the run rate was rising all the time. Despite the best efforts of Petal and new batsman Carlisle, who put on an un-broken 75 for the 5th Wicket (T Petal scoring an unbeaten 73 off 113 balls and Carlisle with 34* off 54), Karachi limited Mashonaland to 194 for the loss of 4 Wickets off their 50 overs, winning by 14 runs. Ahamed and Kaneria, who opened the bowling together, returned figures of 10-3-30-0 and 10-4-26-1 respectively, with Javed (10-3-30-0), Maqbool (10-2-42-1) and Nawab (10-2-45-1) all kept the run rate just out of reach.

Mashonaland will be happy with the bowling effort but Seager may be replaced as he was inneffective, and Mashonaland will be expecting from Andy Petal and may play another opener in the place of Gripper. Mashonaland had 6 Wickets in hand though and will be annoyed no one came out and played an innings around a run a ball to take them to their target. Coach Eric "Rik" Heath felt that this was down to the lack of One Day Cricket played in Zimbabwe but was pleased that they only lost 4 Wickets.

Karachi will be dissapionted with their batting performance against a team not noted for it's bowling in One Day Cricket, and although happy with the bowling economy and the fielding, they will be dissapionted with the lack of a cutting Edge.

Mashonaland face Guyana in a 4 Day match next Week.

Leicestershire Shewagged!!!!

The Colts hosted Leics this week and on the strong pace bowling pitch weer sent in to bat, this did not bother Sharath and Shewag however as they scored at relative ease till sharth was traped in front by Kabir ali for 31, The Colts then Took control and pounded the seemingly weak Leics attack with Katich making 50 and Anderson and Shewag combining for a 201 run stand Shewag making 151 and Anderson 109, Singh, Arunkumar and Kenway fell relativley cheaply but the colts total was bolsteder by some silid form from the colts tail, Noffke,24, weeraratne, 21 and upshantha 23 helped the colts to a total of 491, something which they were happy with considering teh tpough batting conditions, kabir ali starred with teh ball for leics taking 5/108

Leics raced to 38 before Upshantha came on to bowl and claimed succliffe ad Jayawardene in quick succession, Ponting and fairbrother than took up the attack before young Aussie Ashley noffke Removed them both in the 20's, de frietis (78) and Maddy (54) set about avoiding the follow-on but they could not bat forever and after ,maddy was caught behind of the bowling of shewag the inings was quickly wrapped up for 306, Noffke and upshantha taking 3 wickets each and Shwag taking 2

The second innings for leics started simularlyto the first racing out of the blocks But they were again hamperd by constant loss of wickets, there was little resistance as Noffke tore through the top order taking the key wickets of Jayawardend, ponting and fairbrother, Wells (83) and maddy (43) set about re building the innings before the introduction of Shewag!! who with noffke quickly finished the innings off. Shewag ended the innings with 5/55 and noffke 4/93 wells wa sthe top scorer

The colts then quickly scored the runs remaining with the loss of just 3 wickets, shewag made 37 and Anderson 39*

Colts manager Andrew said that "It was a fantastic performance from all the team but Shewag stood out above everyone else, he had a top match"

he also commented on current colts trading negotiations "we have been in contact with most teams now and arre getting a positive response, as i have said before all of our players are AVAILIABLE, but only if the offer is good enough"
