Death is always a tragedy, but let us not forget the shame he brought upon the game...
But atleast he confessed his crime. There are many others who didn't and have escaped without much trouble.

for me atleast without knowing the facts, its futile to specualte about the circumstances of his death.

But I agree with Marc, no matter how trgic his end, and how glorious his career, he brought shame to the game, and to himself. And what ohters did does not pardon what he did.

on this note though, I would interested in knowing how this sort of a situation was dealt with in other sports. In cricket for example it has been deplorable the way it has been handled, most culprits were just given slaps on the wrist, Akram, Gibbs, M Waugh etc, and even the Cronje investigation was almost done as if to show that something was being done, not to really find out the results. Perhaps because everyone knew if the real facts came out it will bring too much unwanted disrepute to the game.

I think Marseille soccer side was involved in this kind of match fixing, and also was it the famed Liverpool goalie, Bruce Grobellaer (sp?) who was involved in fixing games? How severly and justly were their cases handled? I had not been in Europe at that time hence do not know the details. Will be interested if anyone could shed some light on it.

With the amount of money involved in pro sports these days, mal practices of this nature are becoming a real danger, and its a very important topic.

"A lot of people wanted Cronje dead," adds the source. "They feared that he would one day tell the full truth, and then many more would be implicated. I know people who have looked closely into what happened but who were warned off by threatening phone calls. They're scared of getting a bullet in the head."
I find that bit really interesting.

I'm not sure if he was or wasn't murdered, but it was a great read the report.

Interesting too see how high the South Africa public still regards him...

Certainly among the South African players (like Rhodes, Gibbs, Donald) and I felt that was why Greame Smith got the SA captaincy because Smith never played with/against or met Cronje.

well i think u'll find most players hold him high. he was a great bloke and alot of people respected him. i always remember the australian commentators and players who were injured and commentating mentioning he was a delight to have a drink with afterthe game. and that sort of thing. quite unfortunate that he did match fix. but he was still a good bloke.

excellent point craig. You may indeed be right.
I thought it was already common knowledge that this was the reason for Smith's selection as Captain.

They prefer to remember Hansie the man, because Hansie was one of the real nice guys in the game, a captain who played hard yet carried none of it off the field. That is why they hold him in such regard. Better to forgive and forget, which is what they have done, a very brave view which shows that Cricket isn't the most important thing in life.

When this story broke, I thought about writing a feature article - but based upon what? A complete absence of facts, a whole lot of supposition, an ongoing investigation and a 'story' which was bound to be vehemently denied within 24 hours.

I decided not to touch it with a 20 foot pole, interesting though it is. The very fact that Hansie decided to change flights seemed to me to indicate that it was a tragic accident - and that the story is a flight of fancy.

Coming next :

Payne Stewart 'Put to Sleep by Aliens' - Jimmy Carter
John Fashanu's Sporting Tips
Lance Klusener - South Africa's next Captain

He was a good cricketer, but his career his one that you would wanna forget.
Why would you want to forget it? Fine player, fine record, still won a lot of games for SA, one of their best captains too. Forgive and forget, he got his punishment which was being banned from cricket, surely thats enough unless you want to go back to the dark ages and hang him to boot...

I always felt he was a good captain. Certainly one person I would of wanted to play under.
