Not close really. Viv had ATG series like England 76, India 76 and Australia 81 over that period. Ponting pilled against weakish attacks and shitted his pants against Harbhajan, averaging 3 in 2001.

Don't forget the series in Pakistan in the early 80s vs Imran, Qasim, Qadir and Safraz. Viv carried the wi batting.
