he’s batted on some ridiculous pitches in his career home and away in the last 6 years or so and also had his career be interrupted by a pandemic during which he got affected mentally and by veganism so he has some solid excuses in his bank

Yeah. I love Amla but Kohli beats him. He was averaging 55 before his decline and has played a higher proportion of his career in a bowling era.

Resorting to veganism out of his own accord actually rules him out from using any excuse, legit or otherwise.

He is vegetarian not vegan. Minor difference there.

Plus he became vegetarian because of some health issue.

Not the best bad wickets bat but his decline has been very exaceprated by conditions. Kohli had an amazing peak, has slapped some truly great fast bowlers around, and is a daddy hundreds machine. Makes my top 20 bats of the past fifty years without a shadow of a doubt.

i think he was the only one to score a 100 in the 2017-18 SA series which had some of the worst pitches for batting

Kohli's home conditions didn't get tough until about 2020 though. That's when he fell off a cliff. He did away in tough conditions in his peak but that was somewhat short-lived.
