International Coach
Best Indian batsman of 70s/80s after Gavaskar. All 3 averages around 42.
Amarnath, a gritty tough batsman, was the most successful outside of India; his record almost rivaling Gavaskar's in Australia and West Indies, with him averaging 50+ overseas, with amazing series in both Australia and especially West Indies against the quartet. Sadly, he has horrible home record, averaging only north of 30, and a bad record in England; and despite having the longest career among these 3, played the fewest matches as a result of being dropped too many times (has 12 comebacks). Probably the best player of bounce.
Vengsarkar was probably the most technical one, also the only one to rise to no.1 ICC ranking for Test batsmen. He was the most unsuccessful in Australia and West Indies, but the most successful in England. His record is also much more of a htb, with averaging 55 in India and barely 32 away. Probably the best player of swing.
Viswanath was the most stylish batsman; resulting in him having a huge fan following. Despite scoring against some weaker Australia and West Indies teams, he has the most balanced home and away record here. Probably the best player of spin.

I've always felt Viswanath is overrated, not just because his record without the WSC weakened teams is high 30's but also because the first half or so ofd his career was still the high scoring era. A couple of great innings aside i find his record very underwhelming.
Vengsarkar was an HTB as already mentioned, but his peak would make MoYo blush.
Amarnath did struggle at home but I tend to think batsmen who travel well are more useful than htb's to most teams as the latter are more common. He had a shorter career than the other two which prevents him winning with any comfort though. His particularly heroic efforts against the genuine peak WI though i think edge it to him.

Amarnath>Vengsarkar>=Viswanath imo, and i'd have Umrigar from the tricky 50's ahead of all three despite him barely warranting a mention here.
