Warwickshire Despair

Warwickshire season sits on a knife tonight as the team doctor revealed to manager Kurt Christensen, that star rookie batsmen Daniel Howarth has strained his back while playing twister, and he'll be out for at least three weeks..

"This is a huge lose to the team, and we'll now have to dig deep for the next few weeks. He was right up there in the battle for Warwickshire, Player of the Season, but he'll need something huge if he's to get back in the running".

Howarth misses one day matches against Hampshire and Glamorgan, but more importantly and frustratingly for Warwickshire, the round 7 show down with Tasmania, which could decide the division three four day title.

Leicestershire vs Auckland @ SA

Leics came out firing for this game, expecting a comfortable victory, and victory they had, demolishing Auckland for 62 all out. Wells 1 0 2 3 and Maddy 4 0 11 3 being the pick of the bowlers.

Leics came out to bat and S. Kabir went wild, scoring 25 off 12 balls before being bowled by Thomas, with the score only on 27 at the time, fellow partner Lumb played a more controlled innings, 23* off 19. Samaraweera came and went quickly for 5, but that was the only joy Auckland had for the rest of the day, Ponting's 8* enough with Lumb to achieve victory by 8 wickets.

There was a big surprise about the MOM however, with Cunis taking the honours with a breathtaking 3 0 36 1. I have never seen such a brilliant spell from an opening bowler, he clearly deserved the MOM.

Auckland bow out

South Australia -- In a press conference after the embarrassing defeat at the hands of Leicestershire, Auckland team Spokesperson, Chipper Chaplin (great great great grandson of Charlie) summed up the situation eloquently:

Australian Heavy weight teams, Victoria and Queensland stepped out onto Wespac stadium, to be greated by one of the greenist looking pitches they had seen. Matty Elliot was quoted as saying"It looks like these sheep shaggers down know an outfield from a pitch. Let's just hope we win the toss."

The pitch aside, queensland won the toss, and tough batting first would be the bet. And at none for 29, with Hayden in full flight they appeard to be right. Enter Ian 'The Freak' Harvey and Robbie Webster. The freak took an amazing 5 for None of 2 overs. This combined with a hatrick from Webster saw Queensland collaspe to be all out of 48.

Slightly confedent with the modest total, the Bushrangers started horibly, losing gun batsmen, Sangakarra and Elliot in the first over from Bichel. Webster (in a man of the match performance) along with Rookie Simon Stanton faced of Bichel. With the fall of stanton Brad Hodge and qebster steadied the ship, to 25. But yet another collaspe, saw with one wicket remaining and still 2 runs behind. Timmy Welsford faced out the end of Bichel's 4th over, and Grant Bradburn (former Kiwi) skied a top edge from Andy Flintoff, that clear the fine leg fence. Bradburn the hero at the end, Webster the allrounder of the day.

Let's just hope the next VB Cup venue is a little more batsman friendly.

I believe Warwickshire's 35,000 capacity, state of the art stadium is the place to hold at least one semi.

Yorkshire Humiliated

Well it was always going to be a tough game and Lancashire came out ready and obviously the phoenix didnt.
First 3 batsmen all with ducks and that was the game really...no one can recover from that.

Now all we can look forward to is the one day series after such a promising season has now looked like Yorkshire can only get some respect in the One Day Div 2

During the week Hooper and Law also have decided to call stumps at the end of the season with Hooper possibly going to hall of fame contention.
Jason Pike had this to say at the end of the game

"yea after such a disappointing game and hoops and stu moving on we wanted to give a good performance it looks like we will have to wait another season to go for another championship"
"We had the talent and skill to go all the way this season in all three categories but now we will have to commit ourselves to developing the young guys into the lower divisions and hopefully building ourselves into a force again"

Kent Pushed All The Way By Courageous Jamaica

Going into the match the result never really looked in doubt, first division verses fifth division… However just like normal nothing ever goes to the script and as a result the Kent manager has the up most respect for the Jamaican side and manager.

Batting first up the Kent side made a deplorable start as pre season star H Gibbs again fell early to a needless run out, Cox and Allen proceeded to score runs and look comfortable before Cox was dismissed by a wonderful catch by the young West Indian W Hinds for 17.

With Allen looking in destructive form he was desperate for a partner to dig in and offer him valuable support, however Flower couldn’t oblige as he out foxed in a seven ball duck.

Things didn’t get much better for the home side as last season’s batting supreme Dan Marsh was unable to get into his rhythm and fell for just seven from 15 balls… though why Marsh struggled Allen was going at a blistering rate as the pair added 37 for the 4th wicket of which Allen contributed 30.

With yet another wicket falling relatively quickly Allen was again left to struggle as Jayawardene’s horrendous One Day form continued with just 6 runs, and is looking at losing his place in the side for the next match.

Allen was left to bat with the all-rounder’s and tail and again none offered much trouble to the scores as only Hutton’s 14 and McCague’s 12* were the highlights of the last 5 wickets fell for just 43 runs of which Allen contributed the majority.

Unfortunately for the batting star of the Kent innings, Allen sacrificed his wicket in the acceleration in order to get quick runs at the death, going for a sublime 71 from just 51 balls in a innings that made the Kent innings.

Target 145

Kent fell below par in the batting, however during the interval talk around the ground was that the Kent side were loaded particularly well in the bowling department and should be too much for the Jamaican batsman to resist.

The prediction seemed true, as both openers were removed in the space of three balls and the completion of the dangerous top three was completed just ten runs later as Hinds was stupidly run out.

Saggers continued with a deadly over of bowling that saw the fourth wicket fall for no addition to the score, Jamacia now struggling badly at 4/22 and the target of 145 seemed along way off.

White began to copy Allen’s example and dug in and score at a reasonable rate, but not before another couple of wickets tumbled at the other end, seeing Jamaica proceed to 57/7.

However this is where Jamaica refused to give in and White and Powell added an aggressive 30 run partnership to see Jamaica through to 87/7 still looking well out of the game Powell began to free the arms and put on a further 38 runs for the 8th wicket before Garrick was well caught behind the stumps by a full stretch Flower.

Suddenly at 125 and Powell not out 33, the game looked in the balance with just 20 runs to win.

The Kent bowlers upped their own game again and even the fantastic Powell couldn’t quite see the division 5 side for a memorable victory.

The Jamaican’s ended up falling just 8 runs short with Powell blasting 11 runs in the last couple of overs and keeping the strike away from the tail. However the Kent bowlers held their nerve when it matter and as a result sees them through to the VB Cup Semi Finals for the second consecutive season in a row.

After the match Kent manager Rich2001 said

“It was a phenomenal effort there at the end by the Jamaicans batsman, the game in my opinion looked dead and buried at 87/7, however you can never write of a talented bunch and they certainly gave us a run for our money.

From our point of view Allen again stood out and the rest of the batsman really need to pull their socks up and quickly. The bowling was very tidy in the context of a shorten version of the game and took wickets regularly to keep the rate down.

As for the Semis I guess at this late stage, whomever we get is going to be a tough game but we just heard that Qld made a dramatic exit over at the MCG, which opens things up abit more.

Slightly confused over why Garrick was awarded the MOM prize, when there was numerous players that had a far better day?

Overall a great day here at Canterbury and it’s good to hear that in the friendly matches elsewhere both close friends and managers of SA and Hampshire were victorious :)

Australian Titles..

South Australia's Aussie Title challenge got off to a start against ACT..
In a game which was going to have alot of feeling with 3 ex ACT boys playing for SA and 1 ex SA boy playing for ACT the hype about this game was big....
ACT won the toss and on a very good looking pitch they elected to bat, It proved to be a bad decision...
After a good solid start of 49 the ACT boys felt like they should start to depart in pairs...
First it was Jeffrey and Maxwell both departing with the score on 49...
Then Dawn and Brown departed with the score on 75...
Next was Southam and Watson who departed on 81 and 91 respectively..
Hogg and Ramage then joined the pairs club when they departed on 117...
And to top it off Mann and Williams departed on 132 and 134 respectivley...
The man not out Dawson with an unbeaten 24...
For SA the star of the show, Heath Axelby giving ACT manager Simon Fitzsimmons nightmares about letting him go, Axelbys figures of 5-31 from 8 overs just the start of what was to come....

SA needed 135 to get their Aussie Title challenge off to the perfect start...
Williams failed to make an impression on his former team getting a 4th baller, but French and Jenkins fired scoring at a very quick rate they took the game by the scruff of the neck and it wasn't till the score had reached 84 when Frech departed for 55...
Lehmann and Jenkins then finished off the demolition job SA winning by 8 wkts, Jenkins 58* and Lehmann 20*...

Game 2 was against rivals NSW...
After defeating the blues the week prior in the four day league SA manager Brendon Goff was expecting a strong fight from the blues, but what was to come would simply amaze any cricketing viewer....
SA won the toss and elected to bat and Jenkins and Oliver got the show on the road, Jenkins scoring at way better then a run a ball hitting 43 from 29 before falling with the score on 62...
Stratton only managed 7 and when Oliver fell for 27 SA were 3-76 amazingly in the 10th over...
But from there the party started...
Williams and French toyed with the NSW attack both scoring at better then a run a ball, they took the score to 160 before Williams fell for 50 from only 40 balls..
Darren Lehmann then strode to the crease and played the best innings the WCC has EVER seen...
Lehmann along with French destroyed the Blues attack, the pair scoring a total of 232 runs in the last 25 overs...
Not so amazing that both batsman scored hundreds but the speed in which they were achieved was astounding, French’s 126* from 122 balls and Lehmanns knock of a lifetime 135* from an amazing 77 deliveries…
SA ending up with a WCC record 4-392 from their 50 overs…
NSW were as good as gone before they even stepped out to bat, but with a loss already under their belt against the ACT they needed to win, on the other hand SA new if they got an early breakthrough then they were into the final…
NSW got a reasonable start with Slater and Richards posting 46 for the 1st wicket but the dismissal of Slater for 16 all but destroyed NSW hopes, and when Richards followed only 8 runs later for 31 the only thing NSW could do was salvage some lost pride..
Kallis and Lara pushed the score to 92 before Lara fell for 11, and then Bevan helped Kallis post a 89 run stand before Bevo fell for 31..
Kenway and Chilton failed to push for permanent selection with average scores and NSW were falling away, but Lee joined Kallis and pushed the score to 274 before Kallis finally fell for a brilliant century, 118 from only 98 balls… Streak joined Lee and the pair fought gamely before running out of time Lee finishing 64* and Streak 20*, NSW 7-338 from their 50 overs…
In any other game 338 would have virtually won the game but the strength of the SA line-up and the pitch the way it played was amazing. Funnily enough the man who bowled the best was SA part-timer S.Williams who took 2-15 from 3 overs including the valuable wicket of Kallis….

So to the Final where SA would again face the ACT…
A much better showing was expected from the ACT after their below par round match, and with the wicket being used the same as the SA-NSW game batsmen were expected to dominate…

SA won the toss and had no hesitation in batting 1st….
Things didn’t go to plan however, Jenkins, Stratton and Lehmann all back in the pavilion with only 31 runs on the board..
Williams and French however took the score to 113 before French fell for 55, completing and amazing tournament where he scored 236 runs @ 118..
De Silva then joined Williams and the pair fired the innings up, they found the batting a little tougher but they managed to put together an unbeaten 143 run stand to help SA post a challenging total of 256…
The total was set, it was a decent score and a total that could be reached, but on a deteriorating pitch and Axelby in good form SA were favourites…

ACT started slowly before Jeffrey fell to Bond for 9, and when Dawson, Maxwell and Southam could only manage 13 between them ACT had crumbled to be 4-53…
Then up stepped H.Axelby, the former ACT star ripped the heart out of an already demoralised team with an awesome spell of bowling.. Dawn, Brown, Watson, Hogg and Ramage all felt the wrath as Axelby again agrivated ACT manager Simon Fitzsimmons…
Shane Bond stepped in to take the final wicket, ACT All Out 118, Axelby returning figures of 5-14 from 7 overs…
A comprehensive SA win in what was a fabulous tournament….
In a post tournament interview, SA manager Brendon Goff answered a few questions…
Press: Congrats on the Win, It was a dominant tournament from your team are you happy with how things went??
Goff: Yeah Im extremely pleased, the boys were given the option of having the week off, but they are enjoying their cricket so much at the moment they wanted to participate, and to perform to the level in which we did I couldn’t be happier…
Press: Some players really stood out, including some who are trying to force their way into the 1st team, are they likely to get a look in??
Goff: Yeah I was extremely impressed with all the guys, they all showed what this team is capable of…
Press: Is French a chance to grab hold of that 1 day spot permanently??
Goff: Kane has really stood up over the last few weeks and his performances in the tournament were second to none, With Mick Miller out still for a couple more weeks Kane will definatley hold that spot and we will see how he goes in the next 2 weeks to determine after that but on his current form he would be hard to hold out…
Press: Well once again congrats on the win and good luck for the rest of the season, thanx for your time..
Goff: No probs, anytime…

Yorkshire batted first, but were quickly reduced to 6/4 in a farcical start to the match.
C.Hooper and D.West (28 – top score) got the score through to 46/4 before that wizard M.Mendis spun his magic to claim 4/7 on the way to dismissing Yorkshire for just 48 all out in the 8th over!
Mendis will certainly be missed hugely upon his retirement at the season’s end as he has contributed mightily to Lancashire’s success n the one day game.

Lancashire lost two wickets as they polished off the victory target inside 7 overs to advance through to a semifinal showdown against Victoria.

M.Mendis took out man of the match.
