VB Cup 2nd round/Friendly Reports

Slats4ever

International Vice-Captain
Province came to the friendly tournament hoping to play 3 matches and get there players in some form.

Game 1 Versus Glamorgan
Glamorgan's innings was an impressive affair. Saurav Ganguly made the most of some wayward bowling to compile a brilliant 99 off 109, with support all of the Glamorgan batting line up throughout his innings. Kyle Hogg was inspirational with the ball as he continues to be the rookie of the season taking 3/41 off his 10 overs.
Province were chasing 270 to win, and it was always going to be hard. The top order of Province looked shakey with Astle Rickman and Irani all going before 72. The chips were down for Province however Rabbi Llewellyn then took control of the game. Llewellyn made a wonderful 151 not out off just 154 balls to show the rest of the community that he had arrived. Laxman's supportive role at the other end was overshadowed as he cruised to 64. The game however was not one when Laxman was dismissed, quick runs still had to be got at a run a ball. McKenzie was impressive in scoring 20 off 8 to guide the side home with 3 overs to go.
A wonderful win, highlighted by a superb knock by Llewellyn.

Game 2 Versus Western Australia
Western Australia is a side Province has never had much success against, neither has Slats4ever. However a positive mood in the camp reflected in their on field proficiency. In a clinical display, with spear head Brett Lee leading the charge with 4/34 WA were dismissed for 227, with only Keegan shining with 122.
Province's batting display was a contrast to their one in the first game. The innings was rocked by 3 run outs, and a lot of small scores under 20. It took an awesome display by VVS Laxman who compiled 113 off 104 to get Province home in a nailbiter by one wicket. WA looked to have the match wrapped up until Lee joined Laxman and together having a 70 run partnership.

Final Versus Surrey
Province went into their first ever final feeling quietly confident of defeating Surrey.
Surrey's batting quickly dispelled any signs of nerves on their behalf as Mane and then Thorpe set about compiling a massive score. at 5-260 and with overs in hand anything was possible, however a spirited bowling attempt saw the lower order struggle and surrey be all out for 321.
Province's response needed something special and when Llewellyn went for 0 it appeared as if all was lost. The rest of the batting looked promising but no one went on to create history, with the WA bowlers keeping there total safe with tight enough bowling.
Surrey restricted Province to 262, enough to give them the Friendly trophy.

Warning, Demolition In Progress!

Kent eased through to the next round of the VB Cup after a comprehensive victory over a much-fancied TN side.

Kent arrived at the TN ground with some of the veterans of the team having nightmares of previous visits.

Un surprisingly it was extremely hot out in the middle in the mid day sun and would be testing even for the home side. The Kent captain lost the toss and as a result the home side decided to have first use of a very hard and dry pitch.

The inning’s was all but over at the end of the first over when M Saggers destroyed the top order in spectacular fashion seeing S Jayasuria going for a two ball duck, followed very shortly by M Clarke who went first ball and just two balls later saw M Samuels depart for another two ball duck. Leaving the home side in all sorts of trouble at 1/3 (or 3/1 for you Aussies) however due to a slight injury or VC4 being stupid , M Saggers never got another bowl in the innings so ended with figures of 1 – 0 – 1 – 3.

Things went from bad to worse for the home side as D Cherry only added 2 before was caught well by D Marsh. When M Chapman went for 13 the writing was on the wall (if it wasn’t already) before a complete collapse followed seeing the next three batsman all fall for ducks leaving TN in dire trouble at 15 for 8 :D. Slight resistance from A Razzaq and D Ganesh enabled the score to reach 34 before D Ganesh and Y Engineer fell in the space of two balls.

TN: 34 All Out (9 Overs)

M Saggers: 3 for 1
T Murtagh: 3 for 18
M McCague: 1 for 2
T Hawkins: 3 for 5

Note: 7 Ducks and which 3 were nice Golden ones :D

In reply Kent required 35 runs to win at a tough 1.4 an over ;)

The result was never in doubt even with Jamie Cox falling for a five ball duck in the 2nd over, H Gibbs played his natural aggressive style and blasted 25* from just 14 balls and B Allen just knocked it around for a easy 6* (12)

Kent: 35/1 (6 Overs)

H Gibbs - 25*
Allen - 6*

M Shrinivas - 1/12

Kent Won By 9 Wickets

MOM - T Murtagh (Kent)

However some managers just couldn't live with Kent being the outstanding team of the day and had to go one better (QLD :P )

However disaster struck as both M.Wood and M Jayawardne slipped on the alcoholic substances that were free flowing after the game and both will now be out of action for the foreseeable future :(

nsw friendly cup report!

well with nsw knocked out of the vb cup it was of to suny wcc park for a tourny with some other unfortunate teams.

with nsw testing out some players that have not seen alot of time out in the middle, the likes of warne, mcgrath, haddin & kirsten all rested, it gave the others an opportunity to shine, with nsw still putting up a solid outfit, but not taking it to seriously.

GAME 1 V ACT

with act traveling well this year the blues where not at all confident going into the 1st game. act batting first and with young gun ferguson bowling like a 10 yr veteran it was going to need to be a good bowling performance to have any chance of beating the fellow cousins of nsw.
ferguson and streak struck early and act never really recovred and where bowled out for a low 175. nsw very happy with the performance. d ferguson taking 5 - 47 of 9 overs, young spinner y mcdowell also taking 1 - 20 of 10 overs. all the other bowlers taking a wicket each.

chasing 175 nsw off to a horour start with slater going for 9, however a fantastic partnership by richards and kallis seen nsw take the score to 127 before richards 59 (67) fell. that bought in bevan 14(13) who with kallis 91(78) took nsw past the total with 8 wickets in hand and 22 overs remaining. a good solid start for the blues.

GAME 2 V SURREY

well nsw had the tstae for victory and where up against another solid outfit by the name of surrey.if nsw could win this game it would pretty much cement them a spot in the final.

surrey batted first and in a very solid batting performance hit all out 300 of 49 overs. g blewett the star with the batt with 76(66) and was well supported by wilkes 72(63) and bicknell 39(49). the bowling for nsw, well there wasnt much to gloat about, all oing for runs, ferguson picked up 3 but at a price 3 - 59 of 10 overs, cairns was welcomed back into the wicket tacking festivities with 4 - 43 of 7. streak , kallis and lee all picking up 1 each.

well nsw caisng 301 for vcitory got of to the worse possible start when, richards, kallisand slater where all gone and the score was in the 20's. could nsw fight back, evan 47(55), cairns 72(66) and streak 62*(50) all put up valid eforts but time would run out and nsw would finish 8 - 265 from there 50 overs, a valid effort after being in allsorts.

pick of the bowlers was a m bicknell, 4 - 21 of 8 overs. smethurst picked up a couple but when for 7.8 runs per over. surrey win by 35 runs

game 3 v western australia, 3rd place hit out!

well both teams come into thie game 1 wina nd 1 loss. the winner would take out 3rd place,
w.a had a bat and all was going well for nsw with wa 3 - 30 then 4 - 82 but one man had come here to spoil the party and that was a gilchrist. he batted magnificently for his 102(119), was well supported by n carter 35(33) with most other bats getting some starts, but not going on with it. wa total 9 - 248, gettable but a good chase would be needed.

pick of the nsw bolwers was yet again d ferguson with career best figures of 5 - 29 from his 10 overs. all the other bowlers picking up a wicket each.

could nsw chase the 249 for victory and take 3rd spot or would the heart of the wa bowling rip nsw appart.when c richards fell for 0(10) nsw where 1 -2 but slater and kallis had other plans, with a marvellous partnership nsw would pass the wa side 1 down in the 45th over with 9 wickets in hand. slater 146*(134) and kallis 99*(125) (kallis has hit 6 90's this season) would steer nsw to victory.s hazare the pick of the wa bowlerswith figures of 0 - 17 of 9 overs

all in all

nsw manager bugs malone happy with a few players who really did shine in this mini cup, ferguson just keeps getting better and with the batsmen getting runs chaisng 250and falling short of 300 just it was a good effort.

NSW PLAYER OF THE SERIOUS
d ferguson taking 12 wickets in 3 games a stand out.

A huge loss against QLD in the Second Round VB Cup match has Eyes_Only looking at major changes for upcoming games.

"All out for 30 is pathetic and players will be dropped as a result" Eyes_Only said at trainning today

The Argonaut

State Vice-Captain
Qld thrashed Northern Districts by 8 wickets. The ND batsmen just weren't up to facing the pace barrage and were bowled out for 30. Rummans with 10 was the top scorer.

Bowling figures
Bichel 2/2, Dawson 3/8, Wood 3/8 and Kasprowicz 2/6.

In reply Qld lost its openers in the chase but brought up the runs in the 6th over.

Hopefully this will get Qld back on track after some losses in recent time.

Well theres not much to say about SA's loss to Auckland in the VB Cup 2nd Round, Except congrats to the winners and that the SA fans can expect that the boys will be making up for their performance in the 1d and 4d games remaining....

I was very dissapointed to say the least about the loss, and to be honest the preperation wa probably taken to lightly, with the expectation of a win throughout the camp...

The VB Cup still remains a goal of the SACA and the players and myself will be aiming for this goal in the future, but for this season our sights are set souly on taking out both the 4D and 1D titles.....

LANCASHIRE DESTROY KARNATAKA

Danger side Karnataka was knocked out of the VB Cup in style by a fired up Lancashire.

Karnataka batted first and at 30/1, nobody expected the drama that followed as S.Harwood (3/5), K.Sullivan (3/0) and C.Schofield (2/6) ripped through the Karnataka innings in scintillating fashion to dismiss them for 69 all out in 15 overs.

Young opener A.Schiller ensured that there would be no similar catastrophe for his side with a fine innings of 43 to steer Lancashire to a seven wicket victory at 71/3.

KARNATAKA – 69 all out
LANCASHIRE – 71/3
