Tillakaratne quits

Ford_GTHO351

U19 Vice-Captain
IMO it not suprising that Tillakaratne has stepped down from the Test Captaincy.

Marvan Atapattu should take over the Test Captaincy as he is already the ODI captain.

If he is captain his position is more or less safe at the time being.

But without the captaincy and at 36, he is under the spotlight even more to preform and hold out a young player from getting in.

If he scores runs he will stay in, if he doesnt, he will be out and his career will be over (internationally). SImilar case to the Waugh twins.

I reckon its time to go. Sri Lanka have to look at a solid, yet youthful team. Compare their team to Pakistan and India who have a good mix between youth and experience. The future of Sri Lankan cricket doesn't exactly look promising at the moment. In my opinion I think its time Tillakaratne goes.

Mahela Jayawardene or Kumar Sangakkara should captain this Sri Lankan side.

There young in the long run, but experienced enough to command respect from their peers. Sangakkara would be a good choice, he's aggressive, intelligent and bold in his strategy and decision making.

I wouldnt want Jayawardene's batting to be affected though, as they really need him as a batsman.

I agree, however not just yet. I think what SL needs right now is the same captain for ODIs and Tests. I'm not sure if Sangakkara is vice captain of the ODI team, but he should be VC in both forms of the game and leave Atapattu captain. Moulding Sangakkara into a captain will only benefit him and then when Atapattu calls it a day Sangakkara can step up with plenty of experience of not only playing but also being a leader. Jayawardene can then be VC.

Best news for that team. There was no way they would ever win a series with him as captain. Besides, he could not win matches as a batsman in the later part of his career, he lacks strike power and does not last very long either. He can't even field well. That made him a very ineffective selection, so he had to step down, since he could not do much as a player as of now. Hopefully, Marvan will do a better job.

The problem with this Sri Lankan team is that they're being too conservative. Soem things have nor worked for a very long time, yet they have stayed in the plans for a long time. It is about time they look at what's working for them and what isn't, from what has stayed for a long time. All the Hashans and Dharmasenas can go. We would prefer to see some fresh, young players in this team, if they have to improve. Saman Jayantha should get more matches. Left-arm seamer Mirando also deserves a place, given Zoysa's indifferent form.

...and seeing the way Sri Lanka 'A' are playing in New Zealand at the moment the next group of players don't seem all that good.

I think Zoysa has bowled very very well in his two Tests. Its a shame he gets injured too much.

im hardly surprised. to put it mildly he was really stupid at times and some of his moves in the series against england could only be described has horrendous.
personally i think the best captain for sl would be sangakkara or jayawardhene(although his place is under serious jeopardy). i dont think attapattu will ever amount to anything great.

Why Is Jayawardene's spot under threat?

Four Tests back he made a century that put Sri Lanka in a good position to beat England.

They did.

Now you will tell me that it was five Tests since Ricky Ponting made a ton and should be dropped...

Very well? If that was so, they could have come close to winning a Test. He just takes 1/2 wickets a match, or 3, then runs out of steam. His batting was pathetic.

Even tailenders like Dinusha were getting 50's at that time. Nothing special.

Why? They have won so many Tests in so little time, so there is no need to complain. The Lankans, on the other hand, have lost 3 Tests in a row and have just one victory, post World Cup.
