The weirdest thing is that he was actually good against Australia. You'd expect that an English player who was talented but struggled with either the extra pressure or higher quality of bowling at Test level would be even worse in the Ashes against a good attack in a high profile series, but that he was pretty decent against Aus was paradoxically his only redeeming feature.Such an enigma this guy, and probably still the best example of the steep step-up from FC to Tests for certain players.
