I think he was a bit under-rated at the time because he wasn't quite as much of a strike bowler as Lindwall or even Miller and he was less exciting as a result. He kept his average better by just never giving away any runs.

iirc first test of the 59 tour they had a matting pitch. And after the tour were convinced to abandon the practice.
