Tendulkar v Lara (against pace)

Tendulkar overall. Except for a brief period in 2006 when he seemed to have trouble with Shoaib, I never saw him struggle against a worldclass pacer.

Against medium pace alone though, I may opt for Lara. But he clearly struggled in series against Donald and the two Ws in the late nineties.

Neither. I'd much prefer Ponting, Viv or S Waugh vs real pace. But between these two, Sachin is marginally better. Sachin did look more comfortable but contrary to popular belief, he didn't make more runs vs the Ws and Donald than Lara. But he did score hundreds vs all 3 so there's that. And Sachin did do well vs Steyn; a bowler Lara never faced.

Vs McGrath/Pollock level pace: Lara all day. Spin?? Lol Lara no contest.

Brian Lara dismissals:

Warne: 7 times in 20 matches
Murali: 5 times in 8 matches
Saqlain: 2 times in 1 match

Tendulkar dismissals:

Warne: 3 times in 12 matches
Murali: 8 times in 19 matches
Saqlain: 3 times in 4 matches

Included Saqlain because he had great success against Tendulkar. I don't think you can claim Lara was better undisputedly. Lara always had better peak form/performances so you are going to remember that from memory. But Tendulkar was a great performer against spin too overall.

I actually rate Tendulkar as better than Lara against Warne whereas Lara was better against Murali.

I don't know why people underrate Tendulkar's abilities against spin.

Sachin was great vs spin no questions asked but Lara downright dominated spinners and especially the two greatest spinners ever.

Funnily enough, Lara mentioned the spinners he struggled most against were Kumble and Saqlain since they bowled flatter and didn't flight it like Warne and Murali.

Based on what dismissals? And even if that were legitimate, Lara dominated Murali in his own back yard and blasted Warne out of Australia's attack way back in 1992-93 after he'd spun Australia to victory in the test prior with a 7 for. Warne is very very lucky, that anytime he faced Brian since then, he had the backing of a certain Glenn McGrath aka Lara's nemesis.

Nobody is underrating him vs spin. But Lara was the slightly better player vs spin. Just as Sachin is slightly better vs raw pace (based solely on results not aesthetics).

It seems like a case of higher peaks and lower troughs with Lara against spin too. Does appear to get out to them more often.

Warne was just fresh when Lara hit him out the attack in 92.

During his peak, in the 95 and 96 series, Lara did well against Warne but Warne held his own. 99 yes Lara dominated but anyone who was watching that series knows that Warne was rushed from his shoulder surgery and was below par.

Tendulkar outright targeted and destroyed Warne in 98, then had good series against him in 99 and 2001.

We agree Lara is better against Murali since Tendulkar never dominated him.

Lara played fast and loose particularly against Warne and often got out even when he seemed comfy against him.

What was Tendulkar's 98 series except a complete domination of Warne?
Dominating Warne without McGrath with the likes of Gavin Robertson in India is a completely different kettle of fish to Lara dominating Warne, Macgill and McGrath like Lara did in 1999. And that series doesn't begin to compare to what Lara did to Murali in SL in 2001.

If your point is Lara had better peaks, that's beyond doubt.

Sorry but that's not going to fly because that shoulder flared up way back on 1998, around the same time he toured India and got taken apart. So he probably wasn't 100% there either.

Warne may have been fresh in 1992, but so too was Lara so afaic, they met on an even stage. And in the test prior, he'd taken a 7 for and the 3rd test was on a ground WI had fallen to spin in the two tests there prior.

We aren't comparing who had the better series, Lara of course.

But there is no question that Sachin dominated Warne on spinning Indian pitches so just saying Lara is a dominator is wrong.

Let's not get back to that 98 shoulder debate. Suffice it to say he was bowling much better in that Indian series than in 99 when he shouldn't not have played in the first place.

This is not to say that Lara didn't succeed against Warne overall but I consider Tendulkar to be better than him against that particular bowler.
