Monk awoke. His mind immediately overpowered by the pounding in his head, he soon gave up on any pretense of making something out of this day or recalling the previous night. Instead, he settled instead for two painkillers his previous self had thankfully placed on the bedside table. Rolling over in an unlikely attempt to salvage a night's sleep, he was perplexed to find an object inexplicably left on the pillow beside him.
It was a Polaroid black-and-white photograph. He didn't own a camera that would take a picture like this, nor did he recognise the bizarre scene depicted in it. It was obviously some kind of social event, but certainly not one he'd want to be a part of - not least because none of the faces in the scene were familiar to him. Despite this, the most intriguing thing about the picture was the back. In the corner of the white laminated square was a recently left lipstick mark, composed of half a woman's lips, with the remaining half smudged out past the edge.
The pain in his head would have to wait, curiosity had got the better of him. With some effort Monk made his way over to the laptop on his desk. He would, as usual, be asking the internet for any answer it could muster.
