Sad to hear. Haven't watched any footage but I've read quite a bit about the player and picked him in quite a few drafts including a current one. RIP.

Passed away aged 86. Great batsman who retired too soon. A bit of an oddball which is always good. He had a memorable period as a selector if not always successful.

RIP
Atherton always talks of him so fondly on commentary even when talking about that era.

Always thought he had such a perfect name for a cricketer. RIP.

A life well lived and by all accounts one of the very best post war English batsman - saw him once or twice during his final comeback in the early 70s when he played for Sussex on Sundays

Was a more than respectable golfer as well

Dexter was a talented golfer, an amateur champion, and some believe could have achieved success in that sport if he had not chosen cricket. In Australia in 1962-3 he played a foursome with Norman Von Nida, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player (with Colin Cowdrey as his caddy) and they offered to take him to America to become a tournament golfer, but Dexter refused.

RIP Lord Ted

I missed seeing bat by a few years. My overriding memory of him (mainly because it was odd more than his greatest achievement) was during a rain break when he was a TV summarizer during the New Zealand series in England in 1978. He and the then main BBC cricket presenter Peter West were sat on the TV gantry, which was in the open air, holding umbrellas. There was a thunderstorm in the area and Ted suddenly flinched. Peter West asked him if he was okay and he said something like "Yes. But I've just been struck by lightning" (that's not an exact quote but I saw this once 43 years ago) and they carried on chatting.

Vale.

The first three factlets that came to mind about Lord Ted were: 1) He was born in Milan; 2) He once stood against Jim Callaghan as a Tory candidate for the commons; 3) He referred to Deadly Dev as "Malcolm Devon" at a press conference during his stint as chairman of selectors.

I'm not absolutely 100% all are true either.

Very sad news. By all reports a fine batsman and sure seems quite a character. RIP.

Sad news, but seemingly a life very well lived.

By all accounts, his 70 in 81 minutes against Hall and Griffith at Lord's in 1963 was one of those "I was lucky enough to be there" innings.
