Blewy
Cricketer Of The Year
The South Australian Cricket Association today announced the completion of some trades to take effect next season.
Although expected to be involved in trading this season SACA were not expected to make such drastic changes after what has been a brilliant season so far in the WCC.
The Redbacks have lived up to early season expectations by securing the Division 1 One Day Title and also almost certain of securing the Division 1 Four Day Title top become the only team in WCC History to claim the undisbuted double. However SA manager Brendon Goff has not rested on his lorels by releasing both openers and Wicketkeeper/Batsman to Kent in what was a very strong looking deal.
Matthew Jenkins, Shaun Williams and Brett Samuels are all heading to the UK to link up with English side Kent, whilst in return South Australia are recieving Ex-Zimbabwean Wicketkeeper Andy Flower, Sri Lankan star Mahela Jayawardene and English batsman Matt Wood.
Goff told a packed press conference today that he was dissapointed a bit that the guys were leaving but he felt there were better opportunities for them in the future by moving to the UK. "I spoke to all the guys concerned a couple of weeks ago and told them there was an opportunity for them to move to the UK, I said that after achieving such heights in SA this season it may be beneficial for them to move and try and make bigger names for themselves elsewhere, They were excited but dissapointed at the same time".
Goff also commented on the incoming players, He told reporters that the addition of Flower and Jayawardene, both very experienced campaigners would help SA develop their youth more over the next few seasons.
Also released was South Australias long serving paceman Mark Harrity.
Harrity who has been a key figure in SA's success over the past couple of seasons was released to join Hampshire next season. Goff told reporters that Harrity was a key man in the squad which won SA the Division 2 Title in Season 1 and has also been a key figure off the field as well in helping develop the young quick brigade.
Harrity was released after long talks between his manager and Goff, "I told them that Mark may not be a regular in the side next season and I felt that he still had alot to offer, Hampshire were looking for a quality bowler and i gave them permission to talk to him" told Goff. "Mark will give the Hampshire side alot next season and i wouldn't be surprised to see him top the wicket-takers list in his division next season.
Asked whether there would be any other trades this season, to which he replied "we'll have to wait and see"..
Rumours are constantly growing about Greg Blewett returning to his home state of SA next season, however at this stage Goff has denied any talks have taken place with Surrey.
