Should cricket aspire to be a 'global game' or not?

It is an interesting thought experiment (given that all cricket across England is currently rained off). What would happen if a benevolent media dictator decided that handball was to become the new national sport. Handball is shown weekly on the BBC in prime time and Sky start a dedicated handball channel. All major newspapers start covering handball as closely as they currently do football.

What would happen? Would handball take off or would people stick with their current sports? More widely, to what degree can popular opinion be shaped?
