Runners should be banned - becoming rather farcical

I believe that batsmen should be banned from requesting runners. The current situtation just leaves too much room for batsman to request one for fatigued based rather than genuine reasons. If anyone watched the 2nd ODI between India and Pakistan, you will know where I'm coming from.

Additionally, the runner does not actually play a shot, he is given an unfair time advantage when running between the wickets.

I say - survival of the fittest, you get injured - hit the big ones, or retire hurt. Simple as that really. :p

thats a good point, but if a batsmen gets injured not allowing them a runner will only inflame the problem. Also the batsmen who more often then not get runners are those with injuries who are heriocally batting on, or those who have batted for so long that cramp sets in. Runners are not always used as an advantage

Whenever the runners came, both batsmen got out pretty soon

I guess he means it gives that advantage, batsmen can tap and runner fires off immediately..there's a huge difference in that element of batsmen who is hitting and thinking of taking a run v/s someone who will run like its the last ball of the innings

I think it should only be allowed in TEST, its an advantage in ODI's

are you not just under the influence of that recent games, because runners are necessary, retiring especially in ODI's is unconventional

Ahhhh, I wish for the good old days when players like Arjuna Ranatunga only used a runner when it was absolutely necessary! :p

Well, the opposing captain doesn't have to approve the use of a runner, so quite frankly if they're silly enough to give Inzy a runner because he was forced to run a quick single, that's their fault.

I don't think runners should be allowed, nor do I think 12th men should be aloud to field if a fielder gets injured.

Whatever it takes!!!
I think runners are actually a disadvantage to most batsmen. Only they judge the runs from the shots they play. Others really cannot. But having said that, I think, yes, giving runners can be disallowed in ODIs as it becomes a big advantage for everyone.

If you arent fit enough to carry on, you shouldnt be given the advantage of having someone else running for you, IMO. Bowlers feel the heat too. Bowlers get cramps too. They have to suffer in silence. Why should the batsmen be pampered ?

What a revolutionary, socialistic, idea ??

I believe that batsmen should be banned from appealing against bad light. The current situtation just leaves too much room for batsman to go off the field to have a beer and take their girl friends to the movies/dinner rather than genuine reasons. If anyone watched any cricket whatsoever, you will know where I'm coming from.

Additionally, the bowler doesnt get to go off the field when the batsman is seeing the ball too well and hammering him all over the place !! :@ The batsmen is given an unfair time advantage by allowing him to go off when he cant see but stay on when he can see too well ! :@

Because in no other sport can you replace an injured player with someone outside of the team. If a rugby league player gets injured, you can't tell the 18th player to chuck the gear on and sit on the bench, the team has to survive with 17 players.

Same in Basketball if a player is injured you can't bring someone onto the bench.

Same thing with the batsman, if they're injured, tough!

SJS? how old are you? Pretty pointless post there.
Its not pointless to want to change a rule which no one, not one player I can recall has ever complained against ?

Why must rules about injury be the same in all games ?

Cricket has had hundreds of debates but I dont recall a serious debate criticising the runner rule. Misuse of the rule yes. But so many rules/laws can be and are at times misused. Thats why there are umpires. Theey do a fairly decent job and the fielding side captain has to approve the runner anyway.

your getting more and more sarcastic as you get younger, SJS.
Yes I need to curb the tendency. Thanks for pointing out. Shows a bit of loss of temper. Not good.

Are you kidding? So many people complain about the runner rule. Adam Gilchrist in the recent test series against Australia stated that he thinks runners should be driven out of the game, after the Kaif incident during the 2nd test. His reason wasn't directly related to Kaif's dehydration, but his general dislike for it. Off the top of my head I can't think of many other people who have complained by name, but many people in the media and players have shown their dislike for the rule.
