Mashonaland named unchanged side

In what has come as a surprise to many of the struggling club's fans, Mashonaland has named an unchanged side going into this week's FC game against Victoria. The team, which hasn't won a game since Round 2, barring forfeits, has seen many changes in the recent weeks as the team has struggled to play with any consistency.

When he named the side earlier this week, manager Andy Cameron stated that their recent performance against Tasmania was enough to convince him.

"Pretty much everyone contributed in that game, which we had a good chance of winning right up until the end. We just need to get the players' confidence up, and hopefully they'll soon be performing at their best throughout the whole game. As such, we saw no need to make any changes to the side. There was some thought of recalling Danny Prasad, who went well for the seconds last round, and hoping that he and Brad Matthie could take advantage of the conditions early on in the match with the new ball, but we're willing to stay with this side for a bit longer, and see how they go."

When asked about the areas in which his team needs to improve the most, Cameron was quick to answer.

"Batting, definitely. Our bowling's been pretty good over the season, but our batting's really let us down in the past. Recently though, several batsmen have been making half centuries in one innings, and then failing in the other innings. We're definitely trying to turn this around and get batsmen making big scores in both innings. We feel that this side is very strong batting wise, with someone like Vince Walker coming in at number 9, and hopefully that will mean some big scores will be the cards for the team."

Goff names strongest squad for Leicestershire match

Goff feels that after alot of early season chopping and changing that picking a steady side for a few games will be the best way to get the team focussed and playing to their potential.

Canberra junior Jack Smith has been named as Skipper of the side in an attempt to get him to take some more responsibilty in the side..

A capacity crowd is expected at Eden park for Goffs 1st game in charge. One fan telling our reporter that the excitement around the town was at fever pitch after the announcement of Goff as manager and Markus as his assistant. Leicestershire prepared for close encounter

Leicestershire haven't been in the best of form lately in either form and continue to slide down both tables. As the manager puts it, "We haven't really self destructed, we just seem unable to control the match. We set ourselves up for a chance and then fall short. Whether that's a lack of concentration, confidence , skill I don't know, but one thing is for sure, the team will be fighting all the way to the end of the season. Currently the mood amongst the fans is dull and relegation is also on their minds, and who could blame them, 5 consecutive one day losses and not much better in first class really stacks the odds heavily against us, but the team and myself believe we can turn things around and we have set ourselves for this match as a turning point in the season. It's still only the halfway mark of the season and a few consecutive wins puts us back out in the light and in with a chance to finish strongly, and regardless of the result this week, we will keep fighting to turn our fortunes around."

Auckland on the other hand have had their spirits lifted, which certainly stacks the odds against the visitors but the visitors are quietly confident of breaking the losing streak this week and edge away from the first class relegation zone.

The team is unchanged, although there was a possible move in replacing C Rogers with McKenzie but Rogers has remained in the team for this week's game.

Northerns 2nd XI vs Lancashire 2nd XI

Unchanged Titan's Hoping To Continue Good Form

Zac Ritchie has named an unchanged side to face Lancashire at home in Round 9 of the 2nd XI First Class Championship. "After getting a win under our belts last week against Warwickshire we feel confident that these 11 players can do the business against Lancashire" the manager was reported as saying. The decision to keep his playing XI together has come at a welcome time for Ritchie who admitted that the team had been struggling prior to his appointment. "We were under a fair bit of pressure before I came along, 1 win out of 6 games is hardly a good return is it? But we are a quality side and we know we have the ability to beat Lancashire"

Ritchie's side may need more than self belief to beat the high flying English club, Lancashire are currently sitting in 2nd position in the 1st Division table with 5 wins out of 7 games. They will still be looking to perform well in order to get themselves to the top half of the table, they are currently languishing in 7th with 55 points. A win in the weekend could see them overtake Australian based ACT if they secure enough bonus points.

Team to play Lancashire: A Wykes(c), AS Das (wk), K Pieterson, J Watambwa, D Dawson, M Vardhan, O Hutchinson, E White, T Gavaskar, V Harkness, F Naylor

Lewis leads from the front as Mashonaland beat Victoria

In what must have come as a relief to the struggling Zimbabwean team, Mashonaland brought up their first win in seven rounds against Victoria today, thanks to a long overdue century from captain John Lewis, and a strong bowling effort.

Lewis won the toss for Mashonaland, and despite the MCG's reputation for being a seamer's paradise, elected to bat first. It only took 3 overs for Brett Lee to find the breakthrough, dismissing Patrick Mullick for only four runs, and continuing Mashonaland's top order woes. Quinn Roll, however, combined well with Lewis, and the two of them saw off the fearsome opening combination of Lee and Harwood. Both players brought up their fifties, although Lewis was given two chances on the way, with Lee and Hodge both dropping easy catches. The home team came to regret these drops as Roll and Lewis put on 191 runs together, before Lee had Roll trapped in front, just four runs short of what would have been his maiden first class century. New man in Quentin Oulton started cautiously, giving Lewis most of the strike, which allowed him to bring up his first century for Mashonaland just before stumps on the first day. After a fifty run partnership however, Lee got another breakthrough, this time getting Lewis lbw for 111. Oulton and Gibbs put on another fifty run stand, carrying the score to 332 before Gibbs was out for 45 to Pascoe. Soon afterwards, Oulton brought up his half century, but was out to Harwood soon after. The following batsmen all made starts, with Gavaskar (28) and Straw (23) failing to kick on, but in the end enough was scored for Lewis to confidently declare on 7/418.

The declaration left Victoria with 20 overs to play out before the end of the second day, and the Mashonaland bowlers managed to make the most of it. Brad Matthie was the first to strike, with Clissitt out to a contentious lbw decision for only 2. Vince Walker then followed it up with Durrant's wicket for one, and in the next over, Anderson inside edged a half volley from Matthie onto his stumps, leaving Victoria on 3/26. That soon became 4/26, as Matthie uprooted Brad Hodge's off stump the very next ball. Soon after, Walker had de Silva and Kaif out, both for ducks, before he bowled Pascoe for only 5. By the end of the day, Victoria had collapsed to 7/38, with only David Hussey putting up any resistance, with a hard-fought eighteen. The third day started the way the second ended, with Matthie bowling Hussey in the first over to leave Victoria on 8/61. Lee and Ahmed then managed to put up some resistance, adding twenty runs, before Lee returned an easy catch to Walker, giving him his fifth wicket. Soon after, Matthie took his fifth, dismissing Harwood for 1, and bowling Victoria out for only 84.

Brett Lee had a tought time with the bat, but top scored for Victoria with 19

With a first innings lead of 334, Mashonaland were quick to enforce the follow on, but were met with strong resistance as Victoria put up a much better show with the bat the second time around. Anderson and Clissitt both brought up half centuries and actually forced a bowling change. While Anderson's innings was circumspect and cautious, Clissitt was seemingly in one day mode, as he brought up his 50 off only 44 balls, but after an opening stand of 117, he nicked one behind to Midlane off Walker after a blistering 71 off 62. Durrant and Anderson combined slowly for their partnership of 49, but in the end Joshi had Durrant lbw for 19. Unlike almost all the other batsmen, David Hussey could not better his first innings effort, as he was caught behind off Joshi for 17, leaving Victoria on 3/190. Hodge and Anderson survived past tea, but soon after the fifty partnership was brought up, Anderson finally fell to Walker, for 87 off a mammoth 223 balls. Number 6 de Silva then capped off a dismal game, as Matthie had him out for a duck to complete a pair, and Walker quickly had Kaif back in the dressing rooms for 6, leaving Victoria on 6/262. Pascoe and Hodge put on over fifty together, with Pascoe hitting 40 off 32, including three consecutive fours off Walker, but he couldn't hang around and was eventually out to Matthie just before stumps on the penultimate day. The visitors wasted no time in taking the new ball, but Hodge and Lee remained solid at the crease, Hodge bringing up his 50 off 128 balls. It was the spinner Joshi who broke the partnership, dismissing both Hodge (56) and Lee (34), before quickly polishing off Harwood (1), to end Victoria's innings on 380, a lead of only 46.

Hodge made 56, but Victoria could only set Mashonaland a target of 47

Victoria had no real chance of winning the match from here, but that didn't stop Shane Harwood from bowling an almost unplayable spell of 2/10 off 9 overs. Lewis couldn't repeat his first innings heroics, and was Harwood's first wicket, making only 2 off 19, while Quinn Roll wasn't given a chance to score before Harwood found his outside edge. Even at 2/16, however, the match wasn't really in question, and Mullick (36*) and Oulton (11*) saw Mashonaland home.

Shane Harwood's 2/10 wasn't enough to seriously worry the Mashonaland supporters

Mashonaland 7/418 dec.
Lewis 111 (281), Roll 96 (194), Oulton 53 (169)
Lee 3/98, Harwood 2/79

Victoria 84
Matthie 5/20, Walker 5/45

Victoria 380
Anderson 87 (223), Clissitt 71 (62), Hodge 56 (166)
Joshi 5/90, Walker 3/102

Mashonaland 2/50
Mullick 36* (60), Oulton 11* (28), Lewis 2 (19)
Harwood 2/10

Markus Tests Ranks

Auckland Second XI manager Ian Markus has opted to test some of his younger players in key roles in the upcoming 4 day fixture. Wally Fitzstanford settles into the middle order with a chance to strut his stuff at 5. Markus has in the past signalled Wally as a player of the future and it will be interesting to see how he goes in such an important role.

Cody Potts and Paul Thorpe are also in the side with both expecting to bowl over and runs expected from Potts bat.

Comets Spring a Surprise
ACT Comets manager Simon Fitzsimmons today sprung a surprise by naming young bowler Ben Marshall as opening batsman for this weeks clash with Tamil Nadu. Marshall has scored 83 runs at 41.5 this season and his elevation to the top has more to do with other changes to the side. Alex Louden has been moved from his opening spot and will bat at 7 while Ismail Tamhane will return to the 2nd XI after copping a pasting last week. Duncan Withe will make his WCC debut this week too, he has been the best of the Comets bowlers in the 2nd Xi this year and it is his time to shine.

AB De Villiers needs some runs at the top

Young Geoff Eaves will again bat at 3 after impressing in the last round, since joining the top side a few weeks ago he has scored two half centuries and is averaging over 75. Moeez Butt will also get another chance to shine, his performances in WCC havent exactly been eye catching but hes been retained on the back of his performances in the 2's earlier this season. The Comets view this as a must win game in their unlikely charge towards the division one crown, the loss to Queensland in round eight was confidence building, to match it with such a strong One Day outfit the team got a lot of it.

Moeez But gets another chance this week

The full side for this weeks clash is;
Ben Marshall, AB De Villiers+, Geoff Eaves, Yashpal Singh, Misbah Ul Haq, Owen Cardew*, Alex Louden, Duncan Withe, Matt Ramage, Moeez Butt and Paul Marlowe.

WP Up Again

Manager Jack McNamara expressed pleasure in his side's performance in a press conference after the 1st XI game, but was slightly more measured about the performance of the 2nd XI.

The 1st XI had a comfortable victory over Hampshire, with the tone being set by Edward Tate again. Following on from his 12 wicket haul last match, he took 6/25 and instigated the rout that saw Hamps being bowled out for 58. As it has been all year, the Jo'burg wicket was tough to score on, with no side making more than 200 all match, as WP ended up winning by 8 wickets. Yusuf Porter's 5 wicket haul in the 2nd innings helped continue on his excellent season (33 wickets @ 18.52).

The 2nd XI drew with their English counterparts, as both sides found batting a bit easier. However, the drawback of this was some slow batting from both sides, and this further enhanced the likelihood of a draw later on. A good declaration by the Hamps captain made things interesting, and with WP 6 wickets down with many an over still to be bowled, the gamble looked to have paid off. This was quashed by a captain's knock from James Schofield, scoring a quickfire 69* to make sure that the game was saved.

WA's 2nd XI bowlers have put on a remarkable display to steal a win from the clutches of their Tamil Nadu opponents. After managing only 106 in their first innings, WA seemed well up against it after Tamil Nadu replied with 223. WA's second innings effort of 269 never seemed like enough with a deficit of over 100, but an inspired bowling performance by Friend and Virtue saw Tamil Nadu rolled for 81 in just 27.5 overs.

Match results: WA 106 (Rayadu 32, Sullivan 5/16) and 269 (Ghulam Ahmed 88, Raymer 62, Henshaw 5/62) defeated Tamil Nadu 223 (Reifer 49*, Ryder 5/37, Hossain Jnr 4/71) and 81 (Bolton 28*, Friend 5/39, Virtue 4/36) by 71 runs.

Northerns 2nd XI vs Lancashire 2nd XI Match Report

Gavaskar Lights up Bloemfontein

T Gavaskar, in his rookie season with the Northern Titans put on an amazing solo act to wrest the game away from Lancashire and secure another win for his team. The Titan's batted first on a great looking wicket and were disappointed with their first innings score of 258, A Wykes and O Hutchinson being the main contributors. Man of the Match Gavaskar then took 4-38 in Lancashire's 1st Innings to set up a first innings lead of over 130. In their 2nd innings Northerns made 299 with J Watambwa stroking a classy 64 and T Gavaskar murdering the bowling attack for a personal high score of 110 off only 161 balls. The innings included 19 boundaries and suprisingly no sixes as anything loose was dispatched with vigour. Lancashire batted last and needing 436 for victory they were soon bowled out for 299 with T Gavaskar taking 3 wickets to complete a great match for the rookie.

In a match where both teams scored more heavily in their second innings there were many highlights for the winning team manager, Zac Ritchie " Well, what a performance. 121 runs and 7 wickets, I wouldn't be suprised if he was in the frame for 1st XI selection now" the new manager said straight after the game. Under his tutelage the side has now won 2 games in a row and are looking forward to their next game, an ODI fixture against Yorkshire where they hope to continue their manager's unbeaten record.

Northerns 2nd XI vs Yorkshire 2nd XI

Northern's Name Unchanged Lineup

In a largely expected mood Northern's 2nd XI manager has named an unchanged lineup for the OD fixture against Yorkshire. The Titan's need to finish in the top two for a change to gain promotion to Division 2 next season, this is an acheivable task but will require some very good teamwork and an excellent effort in their remaining games. The team hasn't been short of good teamwork since Zac Ritchie took over though, the new manager hoping to extend his record to 4/4 with the South African side. "After bowling Kent out for less than 250 last week we will be looking to do the same against this Yorkshire outfit" the manager said at a press conference today.

Team to play Yorkshire: A Jadeja, A Wykes (c), O Hutchinson, K Pietersen, J Watambwa, U Afzaal, AS Das (wk), T Gavaskar, E White, V Harkness, F Naylor
