Lewis leads from the front as Mashonaland beat Victoria
In what must have come as a relief to the struggling Zimbabwean team, Mashonaland brought up their first win in seven rounds against Victoria today, thanks to a long overdue century from captain John Lewis, and a strong bowling effort.
Lewis won the toss for Mashonaland, and despite the MCG's reputation for being a seamer's paradise, elected to bat first. It only took 3 overs for Brett Lee to find the breakthrough, dismissing Patrick Mullick for only four runs, and continuing Mashonaland's top order woes. Quinn Roll, however, combined well with Lewis, and the two of them saw off the fearsome opening combination of Lee and Harwood. Both players brought up their fifties, although Lewis was given two chances on the way, with Lee and Hodge both dropping easy catches. The home team came to regret these drops as Roll and Lewis put on 191 runs together, before Lee had Roll trapped in front, just four runs short of what would have been his maiden first class century. New man in Quentin Oulton started cautiously, giving Lewis most of the strike, which allowed him to bring up his first century for Mashonaland just before stumps on the first day. After a fifty run partnership however, Lee got another breakthrough, this time getting Lewis lbw for 111. Oulton and Gibbs put on another fifty run stand, carrying the score to 332 before Gibbs was out for 45 to Pascoe. Soon afterwards, Oulton brought up his half century, but was out to Harwood soon after. The following batsmen all made starts, with Gavaskar (28) and Straw (23) failing to kick on, but in the end enough was scored for Lewis to confidently declare on 7/418.
The declaration left Victoria with 20 overs to play out before the end of the second day, and the Mashonaland bowlers managed to make the most of it. Brad Matthie was the first to strike, with Clissitt out to a contentious lbw decision for only 2. Vince Walker then followed it up with Durrant's wicket for one, and in the next over, Anderson inside edged a half volley from Matthie onto his stumps, leaving Victoria on 3/26. That soon became 4/26, as Matthie uprooted Brad Hodge's off stump the very next ball. Soon after, Walker had de Silva and Kaif out, both for ducks, before he bowled Pascoe for only 5. By the end of the day, Victoria had collapsed to 7/38, with only David Hussey putting up any resistance, with a hard-fought eighteen. The third day started the way the second ended, with Matthie bowling Hussey in the first over to leave Victoria on 8/61. Lee and Ahmed then managed to put up some resistance, adding twenty runs, before Lee returned an easy catch to Walker, giving him his fifth wicket. Soon after, Matthie took his fifth, dismissing Harwood for 1, and bowling Victoria out for only 84.
Brett Lee had a tought time with the bat, but top scored for Victoria with 19
With a first innings lead of 334, Mashonaland were quick to enforce the follow on, but were met with strong resistance as Victoria put up a much better show with the bat the second time around. Anderson and Clissitt both brought up half centuries and actually forced a bowling change. While Anderson's innings was circumspect and cautious, Clissitt was seemingly in one day mode, as he brought up his 50 off only 44 balls, but after an opening stand of 117, he nicked one behind to Midlane off Walker after a blistering 71 off 62. Durrant and Anderson combined slowly for their partnership of 49, but in the end Joshi had Durrant lbw for 19. Unlike almost all the other batsmen, David Hussey could not better his first innings effort, as he was caught behind off Joshi for 17, leaving Victoria on 3/190. Hodge and Anderson survived past tea, but soon after the fifty partnership was brought up, Anderson finally fell to Walker, for 87 off a mammoth 223 balls. Number 6 de Silva then capped off a dismal game, as Matthie had him out for a duck to complete a pair, and Walker quickly had Kaif back in the dressing rooms for 6, leaving Victoria on 6/262. Pascoe and Hodge put on over fifty together, with Pascoe hitting 40 off 32, including three consecutive fours off Walker, but he couldn't hang around and was eventually out to Matthie just before stumps on the penultimate day. The visitors wasted no time in taking the new ball, but Hodge and Lee remained solid at the crease, Hodge bringing up his 50 off 128 balls. It was the spinner Joshi who broke the partnership, dismissing both Hodge (56) and Lee (34), before quickly polishing off Harwood (1), to end Victoria's innings on 380, a lead of only 46.
Hodge made 56, but Victoria could only set Mashonaland a target of 47
Victoria had no real chance of winning the match from here, but that didn't stop Shane Harwood from bowling an almost unplayable spell of 2/10 off 9 overs. Lewis couldn't repeat his first innings heroics, and was Harwood's first wicket, making only 2 off 19, while Quinn Roll wasn't given a chance to score before Harwood found his outside edge. Even at 2/16, however, the match wasn't really in question, and Mullick (36*) and Oulton (11*) saw Mashonaland home.
Shane Harwood's 2/10 wasn't enough to seriously worry the Mashonaland supporters
