Round 7 One Day- match reports

thierry henry

International Coach
Worcestershire all but ensured their survival in Division 3 for yet another season with a hard-fought victory over Western Australia, but their promotion aspirations took a battering in Division 3's other games.

Free State and Leicestershire both enjoyed victories. Free State will be particularly pleased with a shock upset over previously undefeated ACT, although the suspicion still remains that Leicestershire and Free State are in effect playing for second place. 2 points back, but with a tough run home and an inferior NRR, Worcester might have to settle for another season of mid table mediocrity.

Western Australia's season is now officially over, while Hampshire's survival chances are barely plausible, 6 points behind 4th placed Worcester.

Worcestershire batted first against WA and tallied a disappointing 214, with Louden's composed 71 the highlight. A 62 run 8th wicket partnership between Dilshan (39) and Raza (28) pushed the score towards some sort of respectability.

WA were in the hunt throughout most of their chase. Ronchi, Wilkins, Evans and Tully all scored at least 20, and things were looking good at 4/127. Unfortunately, a pair of run-outs stalled momentum, and eventually they collapsed to be all out for 171, with Raza taking 2/23 from 10 overs, while Hall was expensive, but picked up 3 wickets for 42 from his 7.

Karachi smack Mashonaland!!!!!!! we scored 340 odd with Manhus and Dharmani scoring tons and Dhoni getting 66 of 30 balls not out. The bowlers then got Mashonaland 5 down, which was dissapointing, but then again they where never in the hunt.

Very well played by all.

Warwickshire Heading For Relegation

After an initial stumble where South Australia lost three early wickets at the Adelaide Oval, Khanderao Rangnekar continued his stunning form with the bat in one-day cricket to up his season average to 75. Despite a minor crumble to 149 for 5, Rangnekar batted stylishly, getting away with his hard, uppish drives to midwicket on many occasions. Along with him was Danish Nisar, the Pakistani batsman with useful part-time spin, who smacked his first fifty off just 45 balls. Towards the end, he took some massive sixes off Gregson, as South Australia batted their way to 267 for 5.

Chris Gayle hogged the strike for Warwickshire, taking quick runs when he could, but there was absolutely nowhere to hide under the lights in Adelaide. Malinga Bandara and James Anderson swung the new ball a mile, Anderson taking three wickets amid conceding sixes to Gayle - he ended with three for 29 in five overs. Yasir Hameed and Chris Gayle rebuilt after the initial shock, and at 115 for 6 after 23 overs it looked like Warwickshire had a chance to bat out fifty overs. Then, Heath Axelby entered for his fourth over. With his first ball, turning several feet, Hameed got a big drive all wrong and ended up with a simple edge to Rahul Dravid. Next ball to Nelson, a flighted yorker that Nelson tried to sweep, but he was deceived as the ball bounced eerily on the pitch - inside edge onto the stumps, golden duck. Hat-trick ball to Gregson - peach outside the off-stump, Gregson tried to drive it past point but only got a leading edge to third slip Nick Adam, who held it with ease. And last ball to English lad Matt Bulbeck, pitched well up in the corridor, spun back and took out his off-stump, as Axelby had snared four wickets with four balls and finished with five for 15 - his second five-wicket-haul, as Axelby moved to 17 wickets, second in Division 1 behind Khalid Ali of Karnataka, who has 19.

Indeed, that seems to be the fate of South Australia this season. Karnataka's batting surprised many again as they thumped Kent by 73 runs, leaving them top of the table with ten points, while South Australia trails closely afterwards with eight. Lancashire and New South Wales tied an exciting match at the SCG, so they both have seven points, so South Australia's trip to Old Trafford on matchday nine could be crucial. Karnataka, meanwhile, have home games in Bangalore against Lancashire and New South Wales, but even if they win both those games there's hope for South Australia, as their massive win today boosts their run rate.

Their focus, however, will still be on the trip to Chennai next Friday. There is still a theoretical chance of a win in the most prestigious competition of all, the WCC Four-day League, which South Australia has won three seasons in a row. Tamil Nadu are, admittedly, leading by twenty-five points, but manager Håkon Mørk refuses to give up. "Twenty-five points isn't a lot," he maintains. "Tamil Nadu's batting isn't really where they want it to be this season, and on that minefield without Cardew they might just struggle. Our job is to handle their bowling, which means we have to be fully concentrated all the time, and that's definitely very possible. There's a few of our guys who are due a big knock and determined to do it today, so if we can make 400 we have suddenly got a chance of scoring 16-17 points, and then it's all to play for."

Somerset once again absolutely destroyed the Glamorgan batting line up, bowling them out for 86 after earlier this season dismissing them for 92...the win puts Somerset in an absolutely fantastic position heading towards the end of the season... :D Good stuff.

ND fall agonisingly Short

In a bizarre match where neither sides batting ever took off, it was Western Province who walked away with the valuable 2 points keeping them at the top of the table.

Wet and a very sluggish outfield met the players so when Graeme Smith won the toss he had no hesitation in sending the home side in. After a promising start Saeed struck the in form Schofield on the pad. First impressions were that the ball was going down the leg side however a long hard look from umpire Kristoff ended up making sure that the correct decision was made and the powerhouse all rounder was back in the stands. Birch and Anderson then started building a platform for the innings. Both men looked solid throughout their innings as they pushed the ball around for singles, however some aggressive fielding led to a boundary draught, where at one stage in the 30th over a boundary hadn't been hit for 18 overs. Just as the pair began to free themselves up and set their sites on a large score two brilliant catches from Smith and Sangkarra put the breaks on. Rabbi Llewellyn, usually one of the biggest bullies on the cricket field was made to look like a snail as the often underrated ND bowling attack kept the batsman strangled and the score at 213.

What was the follow however amazed even the home fans who could be left leaving the ground to prepare themselves for the annual Mandela March. However for those that stayed saw an intriguing battle as Sangakarra effectively played the role of saint and villain at the same time. Usually if a player scores a OD hundred at the top of the order they are considered heroes, however when their strike rate is less than 75 in the modern game they are considered sluggish, and unfortunately amidst all the class that is how this innings will be viewed. At the time he left the crease ND still needed 30 runs in 6 overs, and with two new batsman at the crease it was going to be hard. Both Tate and Kumble were able to screw the lid on tight and keep Province's score safe as the home side finished their 50 overs on 6-203.

It was a sour taste in Simon Fitzsimmon's mouth after the match as he left the ground saying "pathetic, how could we not chase 213". Slats however was pleased with his bowlers and their dedication to sticking to a game plan "213 isn't a great od score, but what I told the bowlers was that it was just that... 213 runs. I told them to bowl their best and we'd win and that's what they did".

The win leaves ND falling closer and closer to guaranteed relegation and reaffirms Province's position at the top in a division which is finally starting to take shape. Slats has made comments to the media that due to his side's good nrr he believes they only need to win one of their next 3 matches to gain promotion.

not to mention khan getting absolutely carted around the park.. 10 overs, 91 runs, and amazingly, one maiden. that said, there were some promising signs... Eaton and Petal both got fifties, and Carver got 44. but, your players just completely dominated

nah i'm tipping u to fall in a heap and only win 1 more gain. i should hold off tassie with my nrr and i can't see them winning 3. and Guyana won't win all 3. therefore one will be good enough in my opinion

Could be worse. Could be Yorkshire :D

Sigh, completely and utterly annhilited by Coach_Pearsons Victoria, all out 116, with Boxall top scoring with 25. Moss nabbed 3-25.

Simpson removed Beasly (20) and Gough got Schiller (2), both wickets LBW's. Yapp and Wilson both scored 47 each as Victoria cruised past Yorkshire's total. Yorkshire should maintain 4th position on the Division 2 One Day table, however.

This is Yorkshire's worse performance of the season and things look to get worse before they get better.

Season 7 can't come soon enough...

Fanning inspires Chittagong

shine a light report just eaten.

Anyway...

Chittagong sealed a fairly comfortable win over lowly Barbados thanks to the all round talents of D Fanning. Setting a total of 281 thanks to an aggresive 71 from Winstanley and a crisp 75 from Fanning, The Chittagong bowlers were able to restrict the Barbados batsmen, despite some late hitting from Bradshaw and Hinds. The key to the defence was the destruction of the top order thanks to some great bowling by Khan (2-41) and Fanning(4-31). On another day the 5th bowler may have cost Chittagong the result and it is something they will have to work on as they go into a tough season climax in OD. With Northerns next up - a team which share the same record - followed by unbeaten Lahore and finishing up away at level-pegging Gauteng.

The First Class season also sees a difficult finish and Chittagong must really buckle down and finish strongly.

I think thats a bit of a harsh call considering my batting depth. Anyways Leicestershire celebrated yet another victory defeating Hampshire by 7 wickets. Brindell scoring a century was pleasing and Piggott contributing in with an unbeaten half century set up the win but Priyadarshana (4 wickets) helped restrict along with Bradshaw going for under 3 an over provided solid support. With ACT losing to Free State the competition is wide open once again. Should be an interesting fight for the final 3 rounds with 4 teams still theoretically in with a chance.

Tasmania are still able to cling on to faint hopes of promotion after a resounding 85 run triumph over Guyana.

Tasmania batted first and set a decent total of 247, batting for the whole 50 overs much to the delight of their manager. The top 3 batsmen gave Tasmania a good base, Goodwin standing out with 72, however the other batsmen were not sble to build upon this, but a very handy 49* from Andy Symonds down the order, shepherding the tail pushed tasmania onto what was a very good total considering the condition of the pitch.

Guyana's openers started steadily, but after Francis was dismissed by Pascoe, 2 quick wickets followed to the same bowler. Aftwer this McDonald and Vernon set about rebuilding and guiding Guyana to their target but both failed to reach 50. Nick Charlton made light work of the Guyanese tail, taking a rare 5 wicket haul.

Tasmania 247-9 Goodwin 72, Ardley 4-63
Guyana 162 all out McDonald 46, Charlton 5-30.

Tasmania win by 85 runs, MoTM: N Charlton.
