Round 7 4 day Reports

Mighty Province Shine in Rain.

After rain had put a rather long delay on most division 4 matches, Province were keen to win this, the most important clash of their year. Following on from some very promising results Province's new skipper Laxman won the toss and decided to bat.

The Province batting line up looked like a totally different one to the one's who had played this season. Rabs Llewellyn continued his impressive score with Richardson finally taking his time for his runs and put on 92 for the opening pair. Laxman then came out and shared a wonderful partnership with Llewellyn taking the score to 212. To the credit of the Canterbury bowlers, they then took a few quick wickets to get them back in the game. With Richo now back in the pavillion for 79 it was tied up agian. However impressive rookie Francis Rickman continued on his merry willow way this year adding another 72 to his yearly tally with a good partnership with Nathan Astle, the pair putting on 113. The lower order struggled to capitalise on the hard work done up the top with Prince's 23 being the only pick. Province however had done the work and got 420, against the side with arguably the best bowler in the world, O Clarke (5/79).

This was where the party was at as far as 4 day cricket go. A large crowd turned up on day 2 to see the Province boys go about defending theeir total. The batting on the day outside of Mills (101) was terrible from Canterbury. They allowed the new young superstar of the game Ishy Nelson to rip right through them, taking 7/44. This was the moment that boosted Province again as they look for an unlikely promotion next year. ****erbury were dismissed for 216 and had to follow on importantly.

The innings started right where ****erbury left off. Brett Lee had taken 2 in his first 2 overs, and a loss was looking certain. I Nelson was the man to do the damage in the first innings but this time it was Roger Telemachus. After being benched for most of this year, the big friendly black man killed off any chance of a revival by taking 6-20 and ripping the heart out've their batting. 210 was ****erbury's combined efforts, leaving Province with only 3 runs required.

Game in a Phrase "This is where the action now starts. We've got our season back on the road, the boys had to win this one. It's not going to get any easier though, with Colts still to come. I have no doubt if we can win our next three we will get promotion, it's still a very open the division. Today's performance proved we could do it. The batting was great with everyone doing well, and Nelson showed us what we know he can do by basically winning the game. Telemachus was also great in the second dig, watch out for big things from him"

Yorkshire Get on the Board

After a long Four Day season the Phoenix finally get on the board with a win over Surrey. The team played well in the first innings with star tendulkar hitting a century posting a rather competitive score but then surrey came out and posted 4 more.

The second innings was another great effort with tendulkar getting another century and then hooper declared to hopefully win the game and wow we did it with not much time left on the board.
This now puts Yorkshire out of the relegation zone but only another win or two will keep them out of the hunt.
This week is massive in the one day to hopefully keep us in the hunt for a promotion to div 1.

Rock on

Colts Hammer Somerset as Div 4 Hots up

After a few good wins in resent times the colts boys arrived ready for a big game against somerset.

Somerset won the toss on a good looking wicket and elected to bat. Key and bowler both hung around for a while but failed to dent the Colts bowling. Both were soon removed by Faisca. Former Colts Bastman Kalutunga combined with Lathwell for a short but effective partnership of 64 before Lathwell was caught behind off the bowling of noffke. Shaw picked up Payne soon after and somerset were is need of a partnership at 4-108. Jimmy Adams stepped up and batted well for 89 but after Kalatunga departed for 87 little fight was shown by Somerset with Shaw finishing the innings up. Faisca and Shaw were the stars of the colts bowling taking 4-98 and 5-49 respectivley.

The colts batting got off to a shaky start with Beasley and Singh removed early. Anderson and Shewag combined for 70 before Anderson unluckily got a leading edge straight back to Caddick, out for an entertaining 47 off just 50 balls. Sharath than joined his former opening partner and took up where anderson left off before he holed out to payne off the bowling off bulbeck for 39 off just 45 balls. Katich came and left without bothering the scorer which left Klusener and Shewag together. they put on another 102 runs before Klusener was trapped in front by Caddick for 44. Noffke provided a little resistance in the tail with 25 but this innings belonged to Shewag who finished not out on 153.

The colts had a lead of 80 odd and were looking to capitalise and did. taking 4 wickets before somerset even drew level again. Lathwell was the only batsmen to provide any resistance for somerset and all the colts bowlers cashed in. Shaw, 3-29 was the best with Beasley, 3-40 also bowling well. somerset 179 all out.

The colts again lost wickets early with caddick getting Beasley and singh caught and bowled but Shewag and Anderson scored the bulk of the runs, anderson out just 2 runs before the end of the match for 27. Shewag again batted well for 55*.

This win takes the colts to within 4 points canterbury. with WP also within striking distance. a slip up by any of these 3 sides and they could drop out of contention for the division 4 title which is probably the most hotly contested division of the season

Once again Auckland prove that they are hopeless with the ball. Maybe I should start feeding them peanuts...
