Mighty Province Shine in Rain.
After rain had put a rather long delay on most division 4 matches, Province were keen to win this, the most important clash of their year. Following on from some very promising results Province's new skipper Laxman won the toss and decided to bat.
The Province batting line up looked like a totally different one to the one's who had played this season. Rabs Llewellyn continued his impressive score with Richardson finally taking his time for his runs and put on 92 for the opening pair. Laxman then came out and shared a wonderful partnership with Llewellyn taking the score to 212. To the credit of the Canterbury bowlers, they then took a few quick wickets to get them back in the game. With Richo now back in the pavillion for 79 it was tied up agian. However impressive rookie Francis Rickman continued on his merry willow way this year adding another 72 to his yearly tally with a good partnership with Nathan Astle, the pair putting on 113. The lower order struggled to capitalise on the hard work done up the top with Prince's 23 being the only pick. Province however had done the work and got 420, against the side with arguably the best bowler in the world, O Clarke (5/79).
This was where the party was at as far as 4 day cricket go. A large crowd turned up on day 2 to see the Province boys go about defending theeir total. The batting on the day outside of Mills (101) was terrible from Canterbury. They allowed the new young superstar of the game Ishy Nelson to rip right through them, taking 7/44. This was the moment that boosted Province again as they look for an unlikely promotion next year. ****erbury were dismissed for 216 and had to follow on importantly.
The innings started right where ****erbury left off. Brett Lee had taken 2 in his first 2 overs, and a loss was looking certain. I Nelson was the man to do the damage in the first innings but this time it was Roger Telemachus. After being benched for most of this year, the big friendly black man killed off any chance of a revival by taking 6-20 and ripping the heart out've their batting. 210 was ****erbury's combined efforts, leaving Province with only 3 runs required.
Game in a Phrase "This is where the action now starts. We've got our season back on the road, the boys had to win this one. It's not going to get any easier though, with Colts still to come. I have no doubt if we can win our next three we will get promotion, it's still a very open the division. Today's performance proved we could do it. The batting was great with everyone doing well, and Nelson showed us what we know he can do by basically winning the game. Telemachus was also great in the second dig, watch out for big things from him"
