Round 6 4 day reports

The Argonaut

State Vice-Captain
Qld took on cellar dwellers Tamil Nadu and were not pushed at all. Qld batted first and made 411. Hayden and Slater both failed but Hussain 193 and Maher 88 stopped the rot. A fine unbeaten 42 from Hauritz completed the scoring. Vaas 3/93 and Mahesh 3/78 were the best of the bowlers.

In reply Tamil nadu could only manage 194. Vidyut 88 was the best. Faisca took 4/77 and Kasprowicz 3/24. The follow on was enforced and the opposition put up more resistance achieving 399. Kumar 58, Weston 109 and Arasu 43* were the main contributors. Kasprowicz 3/59 and Bichel 3/101 were the best.

Qld only lost 3 wickets chasing 186 for victory. Slater 60 and hayden 46 put the game out of reach before Hussain and Love finished off.

An easy 7 wicket win to Qld.

Warwickshire let Surrey off the hook.....again

Warwickshire were sent into bat, and Surrey made the right decision, reducing Warwickshire to 93/5 with only Jayasuriya offering any support making 70. Things fell away and Warwickshire were all out for 187AO.

The fight back came early in Surreys first innings as Jermaine Lawson ripped Surrey apart taking 3 three wickets has Surrey were reduced to 25/4 and later 66/5. It looked like Warwickshire were on top only for Surrey to fight back. From 109/7 Surrey fought through to 170/7 before finally Warwickshire knocked off the tale. Surrey were all out for 177, 10 runs behind. The stars were Lawson who took 45/4 off 11 overs and Pollock who took amazing figures of 18/4 off 12 overs.

Again, the chance to push on and build a lead was their. But Warwickshires weak top order was again exposed and only Sriram was able to offer anything has he scored an unbeaten 76*. As Sriram plugged away he was unable to find support. Warwickshire had reached 185/6 before finishing all out for 199.

Surrey needed 210 to win and were cruising at 73/1. However part time spinner Ian Saunders came on picked up two quick wickets. With the help of Giles Warwickshire had Surrey suddenly 74/4 and it was game on. Marshall however played an important innings and saw thing through to 168/5. Victory was a mere 42 runs away with four wickets in hand. But more drama was to follow. Pollock got rid of Marshall and then Lawson picked up 2 wickets in three balls. Surrey had slumped to 169/8. Suddenly 41 runs with two wickets in hand seamed a long way off. But as it happened Saqlain being the bastard he is, made 27 not out, with the help of Adam Hollioake who made an unbeaten 33. Just like in the one day match Surrey had escaped and won by two wickets.

WP travelled to Auckland for an exciting 4 day match against the troubled Auckland side who are having there 3rd manager this season. Billed as the battle of the spastics neither side really wanted to lose.
Western Province won the toss and elected to bat on what appeared to be a road.
Gary Kirsten and Herschelle Gibbs playing in one of their last matches for WP got the match off to a slow start taking the score to 0-50 in 1 and a half hours, howeer the dismissal of Kirsten for 39 bought G Smith to the crease. Breaking the momentum which WP had gained earlier in the match was too much for Auckland and WP took the game away from them compiling 480. 5 batsman made over 50 with Smith 96, Dawson 51, Jacobs 56, Kallis 76, and Gibbs 63 (all these players are leaving next year).

Auckland began their innings well with Horne and Anderson taking the score to 0-113 however the wheels then fell off Auckland losing 10-115. Willoughby Akhtar and Telemachus all took 3 wickets a piece as they fight for the WP pace bowler of the year award.
Auckland then followed on and it there innings wasn't looking any better than their first. The only bright spot being A Prince's 115, shame he's leaving the club. Roger Telemachus picked up 4 more wickets and took a man of the match award in a sound win for WP who are looking to keep this formup for next year.

A shameful display.

Gillespie bowled well, and rescrticted Lecister to about 400. Batted ****e, and never recovered.

What else can I say, Dang, a golden opportunity throw away.

Match report Jamaica Vs Guyana

Sent Into bat by Jamaican Captain Jimmy Adams Guyana scratched there way to a respectable 318 a/o thanks mainly to an impressive centaury by H. Frances and a well made 78 by F. Rickman.
Jamaican fast bowler F. Rose bowled impressively and finished with 6-82 of his 22 overs.

Jamaica started there first innings well with C. Gayle and L. Garrick adding 49 for the first wicket before Rickman caught Garrick of Colin Stuart for 23 and then removed W. Hinds for a second ball duck. Things looked bad for Jamaica when Samuels was out for 13 and the score was on 83 but thanks to a well made 81 by Gayle and a fine 77 by captain Jimmy Adams Jamaica scraped past Guyana’s first innings total finishing on 319 a/o of 83 overs with Colin Stuart & L. Pulin the destroyer’s with bags of 4 and 5 wickets respectively.
In there second innings Guyana put up little resistance and were bundled out for a lowly 173 leaving Jamaica with what looked an easy 174 runs to win. Rose was the destroyer once again with 4-46 of his 17 overs.

Despite the apparent easy run chase the match turned out to be a real thriller with only some sloppy extras from the Guyana bowlers and a 36 run last wicket stand between Rose and Gayle saving Jamaica from defeat. Best of the bowlers for Guyana was V. Harkness who took 3-25 of nine overs and Colin Stuart who took 3-32.

Man of the match award goes to F. Rose of Jamaica for his match figures of 10-128 and match winning 16*

LANCASHIRE visit to WA

With both sides requiring a victory to ease their relegation worries, this was always going to be a fierce tussle.

WA batted first, putting together an impressive score of 452 all out. A 211 stand for the third wicket between M.Hussey (136) and the soon to retire G.Hicks (109) provided the backbone of the innings with M.Goodwin (61no) and D.Martyn (33) the other main contributors.
A.Dale (39-11-110-4) was the best of the Lancashire bowlers.

In reply Lancashire fell short of the follow on mark at 290 all out. M.Mendis (84no) and A.Schiller (70) stood out as they received little support from their team mates.
K.Lightner (24-5-67-4) and T.Kumaran (17-3-58-3) performed with distinction in the home attack’s bowling effort.

The visiting Lancashire batsmen put up much stiffer resistance following on in going through to 430 all out. R.Dravid (127) finally came good with solid contributions from M.Smethurst (55no), M.Pushpakumara (47), J.Madanagopal (44), A.Schiller (41), P.Mhambery (36) and K.Baumgarner (35). However, it was the last wicket stand of 87 between Pushpakumara and Smethurst that really saved Lancashire’s bacon!
T.Kumaran (29-6-100-4) and K.Lightner (27-3-89-3) again stood out amongst the WA bowlers.

Requiring 269 to win, WA looked in danger of defeat at 162/6 before G.Hicks (anchoring the innings with 94no) and B.Williams batted out for the draw at 222/6.
M.Smethurst finished with the fine figures of 19-3-72-4.

The result did no real favours for either side with both now looking at Division 2 play next season. Despite this, Lancashire look forward to handing NSW a lesson in their final FC game of the season!
