Western Province Win keeps Guyana's hopes alive

Again Guyana have had to rely on other results with another shocking performance against mid-season resurgents Mashonaland. With Mashonaland improving with every game they came to Guyana with confidence and Guyana, after a promising early start faded as the Mashonaland batsman dominated.

Mashonaland after choosing to bat first were in dire trouble early as Satti (3-67), Lawson (1-49) and Zulch (1-44) came out with a blast grabbing four quick wickets as Mashonaland were reeling at 4-29. Mashonaland then went about their rebuilding mission and after a solid 80 run stand, Satti had the tourists in more trouble picking up Patel, but at the other end Arnold was flying, and he found a partner in crime in Durrant, the pair combined at more than a run a ball to set the home side a daunting 273 runs for victory.

Guyana have had an inconsistent season thus far, and it was a relief to manager Kyle Wright that the team had found some consistency in the last 3 weeks with promising wins, however that all came undone as Guyana went out to bat. Francis (34) and de Villiers (39) got the home side of to an encouraging start, but both players were tragically run out. It was then left to Jenkins, to guide the Guyana ship home yet again, but he found no support from his team mates. In a shocking display Guyana were bowled out in 43 overs in a miserable 81 run loss. Jenkins was out for 48 as his compatriots fell around him, and only Ardley with 38 was able to lend support.

The only saving grace for Guyana was that Western Province beat Tasmania meaning they both sit on six points, with Guyana only one point adrift. However, unless Karachi have a very poor run in the last half of the season, they have all but assured a place in division four for season seven, as they beat Northern Districts in a high scoring affair.

Division five is shaping up as a close contest for promotion with five teams still with a chance.

Mashonaland 5-272 (50)
R Arnold 119 (132)
E Durrant 82 (81)
Y Satti 3-67 (10)

Guyana 191 (43)
Jenkins 48 (54)
de Villiers 39 (50)
G Burns 4-37

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Yorkshire demolished by Tamil Nadu.

Although picking up points by default last weekend, Yorkshire got belted in the exhibition match that followed. That poor showing carried over this week to the One Dayer that started off very promising.
Gough selected to bowl and it looked to pay off as Gough himself dismissed Chandrasekh for just one with the score on just 7. Gough struck again with Bhandari taking another catch, Cowe gone for 7, TN now 2 for 17. Cardew and Parida looked to consolidate well before Hamilton trapped Cardew LBW for 29 and just 2 runs later Parida for 22, Tamil Nadu 4-58. Nazir scored his only wicket of the match to dismiss Hammett for 14, TN looking shaky at 5 for 81. But the tables turned with Martin and Porter building a sixty run partnership to recover TN's innings. A faint glimmer of hope for Yorkshire as Porter was out LBW courtesy of Hamilton, but the bowlers didn't capitalise with Beasley (32) & Martin (122) holding together with a 100 run partnership to guide Tamil Nadu to a respectable total of 254.

Yokshire started bad and didn't really improve as the openers (Tendulker (6) & Boxall (11))were quickley pushed aside by Kumble. Weir looked in good form, hitting 32 from 38 but his resistence was ended with a catch from Martin off Hettiarachchi's bowling. Laney seemed to have a brain explosion with a run-out on 12 which quickley followed by Hemp caught out for 3, giving Hettiarachchi his second wicket. Yorkshire were now 5-71, similar to Tamil Nadu's situation in their innings, and they needed a big score down the order to save them. Things were looking good with De Silva (17) and Simpson (28) supplying 45 runs for the 6th wicket, which was ended by a good call from the umpire, Simpson clearly bamboozled in front for LBW. Yorkshire never recovered after this, Hamilton running himself out for a duck, followed by Gough (5), Bhandari (0) and Nazir (8) in no time at all. All out for 138 from 36 overs.

Newley promoted Academy manager Greg Thomas looks like he's having a tough time, stepping up to the big leagues. He needs to focus on building a solid side, without panicing at losses and replacing players in the team. He remarked after the match "Our loss today wasn't without it's good points. Hamilton and Gough showed excellent bowling form but weren't backed up by the other bowlers. We're looking to field a stronger, more balanced bowling attack for our next match."

Tamil Nadu 254 - 6
C Martin 122*
M Beasley 32*
G Hamilton 3/49
D Gough 2/44

Yorkshire 138
S Weir 32
H Simpson 28
D Hettiarachchi 3/20
P Kumble 3/26

Jesus Christ.. Hampshire fold once again.. the OD bowling this season has been absolutely horrible .. not even 1 bowler has bowled with any real sense so far ..!!.. What the **** is going on!!.. Bowlers need to get their act together because there isint even any half decent backup OD bowlers to threaten a replacement with...! If we carry on this way.. we dont have to walk through to Div 4.. we will be sliding into it !

Somerset were back to their best with a resounding win...made 3/277 with 75 to Elahi and a magnificent 145* to Godwin

Then bowled Canterbury out for 169 with everyone chipping in...

In summary...heaps of positives to take from the game...good effort...only problem was the RR at which Canterbury batted...(169 from 28 overs)

Dragons remain winless after five matches

A solid batting performance by the young Glamorgan team waned into insignificance as the Mumbai batsmen ripped apart the Welsh attack to coast home with 9 wickets in hand.

The day started well for Glamorgan as Strauss won the toss and decided to have a bat on the placid pitch. The dragons started the day well with a 57 run partnership between Strauss and Bucknall. The pair went after Mumbai star Andrew Flintoff and hit him out of the attack. Pushpakumara was then brought into the attack claiming the wicket of Andrew Strauss in his first over.

Van Jaarsveld then joined Bucknall at the crease as Bucknall went on to complete his first half-century of the season. The makeshift opener had had a hard time of it to date and his position was under pressure as he'd only averaged 1.33 for the season prior to today's innings. Van Jaarsveld never looked comfortable and chalked up an ugly 17 before being dismissed by Chughati.

Dial then joined Bucknall but his stay was short as Flintoff was brought immediately into the attack, uprooting his off stump. Jeffrey joined Bucknall at the crease and the pair went about rescuing the innings. Flintoff eventually got Bucknall out for 80 but Jeffrey pressed on, blasting the englishman all over the ground. Wickets kept falling at the other end but Jeffrey hogged the strike and found the boundary with ease on way to an unbeaten 85 off just 65 deliveries as Glamorgan finished their innings at 6/256.

It looked like a good contest was shaping up with 257 a slightly below par score but one Glamorgan would be confident at defending. It wasn't to be though as Hill and Tendulkar went about building their innings as Gill and Agarkar tried everything to get the early breakthrough. Gordon was brought into the attack to try and get the breakthrough but Tendulkar just used the extra pace and picked up the scoring rate. Tendulkar played a good innings with a wide array of strokes on his way to a run a ball 74 before he was caugh in the deep of Stewie Gill. Hills was constructing his innings nicely and batted out the innings on the way to a magnificent hundred. Together with Owen they reached the required total with 2 overs to spare and 9 wickets in hand.

The bowlers were no match for the class Mumbai top order and with no assistance from the pitch couldn't do what was required and never looked like they would defend the total. It will be back to the drawing board for the Cardiff based team who suffered their fifth loss from as many matches.

Glamorgan 6/256 (Jeffrey 85* Bucknall 80 Pushpakumara 3/42)
lost to
Mumbai 1/258 (Hills 101* Tendulkar 74 Owen 75*)

In a high scoring 660+ run fest Karachi got over the line against a gallant ND. Karachi set 354 on the bored with a massive 171 of 132 by Manhus. Before the Karachi bowling attack was taking to shreds by Reddy and Smith. But with some economic bowling from Elstub to finish the innings Karachi held on to win.

Mashonaland upset Guyana

Mashonaland recorded their second one-day win on the trot as they overcame the inconsistent Guyana in front of the Guyana home crowd. Going into the game, Mashonaland manager Andyc had stressed that, even though they were the underdogs, they could pull through for a victory. The visitors responded with a resounding win thanks to an inspired unbeaten century from Arnold and an electric performance in the field.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Mashonaland were let down again by their openers, this time Malik and Eaton, both of whom made only two before being undone by the Guyana attack, leaving the score on 10/2. Things hardly got better for the visitors as they slumped to 29/4, with Ul-Haq and Carver dismissed for 10 and 11 respectively thanks to some aggressive bowling and field placements from Guyana. 'Keeper A Petal (27) and R Arnold steadied the ship before Satti had Petal bowled by a beauty of a yorker. Thankfully for Mashonaland, E Durrant picked the perfect time to shine for the first time this season, striking up an unbeaten 150 run partnership with Arnold. By the end of the 50 overs, Mashonaland had reached 272/5, with Arnold on 119*, and Durrant on a run a ball 82*.

The Guyana openers Francis and de Villiers made a decent 67 run opening stand, each making 30's, before a streak of poor communication saw both of them run out from sharp throws from inside the circle. First drop Jenkins top scored for Guyana with 48 off 54 balls, but he struggled to find a partner, with Burns dismissing Beasley for a duck, and Vernon soon run out as well. Ardley came in with Jenkins and struck a blistering 38 off 36, until Burns had him caught behind. The fourth run-out of the game was soon to follow, McDonald failing to ground his bat following quick glove-work by Petal from a wayward throw from the deep. The tail put up little resistance, Burns claiming Engineer and Zulch with little difficulty. The final wicket, another run out, fell with the score only on 191 after 43 overs, 81 runs behind Mashonaland. Five of the Guyana wickets were run-outs, surely not a good sign for the home team, while Burns managed 4/37 off his 8 overs.

Manager Andyc said after the game, “The boys just keep on improving. I was a little unsure coming into this match, with Guyana having some true star players on their team. Thankfully, however, they just didn’t fire today, and we played some good cricket to come off with the win.”

Clutch Win for Province

In a do or die encounter Western Province returned to their former OD glory as they thumped Tasmania. Bowling first on a lively pitch Tasmania made a solid start against the Province attack despite losing an early wicket, however wily Sri Lankan Samaraweera wielded his magic on the top order in a stunning spell as Tasmania lost their next 5 wickets for just 50 runs and the writing was on the wall. Some good lower order hitting from Andy Symonds kept Tasmania hopes alive as the sun was quickly setting over the chilly Bellreive oval. Despite Samaraweera's heroics with 4-30 Tasmania managed to push on and get to 161.

Poor running between the wickets and silly shot making saw Province slump early and Tasmania taking the momentum at 3-26. All the pressure was on Llewellyn as the star player having the poor season made his way to the middle. After starting nervously he and Drumbill were able to pick the gaps and frustrate the field as both players passed 50, only to be dismissed a short time later. However victory was well and truly in site as Tate and Shaw pushed the side over the line with 14 overs in hand.

The win keeps Province up in real promotion contention after the shock Guyana loss early in the day. The work is only half done however for the South Africans who will have to improve on the first half of the season if they are to see division 4 OD action next season.

Gauteng strangled as Chittagong bowlers finally hit form

Gene Mauch once said:

"Losing streaks are funny. If you lose at the beginning you got off to a bad start. If you lose in the middle of the season, you're in a slump. If you lose at the end, you're choking."

So Chittagong's 4 match losing streak in all competitions should be termed a slump, but the slump may well have ended, as Chittagong finally got back on track with a fairly comfortable win against Gauteng. Much of Chittagong's problems in the OD form stemmed from the bowlers poor form, their wayward performances belying their frugal statistics. But Manager Dave Richards was determined to keep faith in the bowling attack, believing the quality would shine through eventually.

So it proved in this match when, despite the attempts of the profligate Kellar to make a game of it, the Chittagong bowlers kept the Gauteng batsmen in check. The combination of Sharma, Khan, Fanning, Hasan and Madurasinghe sent down a total of 36 overs for just 82 runs, but with only Sharma (3-24) of those bowling out, the crowd must have been surprised that Kellar (0-65) was given the full quota. Bacher top scored with a Vaughanesque 60 from 107 balls, and his opening partner Beresford crawled to 17 from 43 balls as Gauteng failed to make the most of the fielding restrictions. Keeper Payne pulled off two smart stumpings as Gauteng were restricted to 182-6 from 50 overs.

By contrast Chittagong's start was brisk if not electrifying, as Indulkar and Winstanley racked up an eighty run opening partnership. Thereafter it was a case of knocking of the runs that remained and it was the returning Madurasinghe that proved the most adept. Having risen from his sickbed to resume his pivotal role at number 3, the 24 year old ensured he was there to hit the winning runs and move the Cougars back into second place, on net run rate from their opponents. That the net run rate was sufficient to lift them above Gauteng, was undoubtedly helped by the fact that this chase took just 30 overs.

The next 2 or 3 games may prove most crucial in both forms and the Chittagong fans will be hoping that the slump is well and truly over and that their rivals experience slumps of their own. Failing that, there is always choking.

Top Performances: S Khan 8-3-15-1, A Hasan 8-3-19-1, P Madurasinghe 47*(50) & 3-2-5-0
Managers MOM: N Sharma 10-4-24-3

High scoring encounters are rare at Tasmania's Bellerive Oval at, the clash against Western Province proving no exception.

Batting first, Tasmania lost Rowell early and after that Goodwin and Banks made steady, if not spectacular progress to 57-1. The next few overs ultimately shaped the end result of the match as Samaraweera made light work of the middle order, with keeper Jacobs claiming 4 consecutive dismissals. After Samaraweera's spell Canning fell to Tate. Symonds did well to score 35 taking the tail as far as he could before Shaw, Kumble and a suicidal run out finished off the innings.

Tasmania grabbed the early momentum, which was crucial top any slim hopes of victory. WP slid to 26-3 after some poor communication led to 2 run outs and Anderson edging Canning to slip. Llewllyn and Dumbrill then shared a partnership of 86 at almost a run a ball. both players eventually fell as did Samaweera with another run out but when Shaw heaved Sammels over mid-wicket for 6 Victory was theirs.

Tasmania: 161 all out. Symonds 35(59), Goodwin 31(34), Banks 22(31). Samaraweera 4-30, Shaw 2-24 , Tate 1-12.
Western Province 162-6. Llewllyn 51(67) Dumbrill 50(40) Shaw 18*(11). Canning 1-22, Sammels 1-23, Symonds 1-45.
Western Province win by 4 wickets.

Man of the match: T Samaraweera

Manager's comment: " It was the batsman who let us down again today, we really need to bat for the whole 50 overs. The bowlers did ok but it was a tough ask to restrict them to that total, but we're still optimistic about our promotion chances"

Dawson smashes Northerns to victory

Northerns won there 2nd straight match after a magical innings from Dawson who made 136 at better than a run a ball(125 balls). Dawson again combined well with Orton to make an opening stand of 120 before Orton was dismissed by Kitson who took 4 wickets for the match. Afzaal who averaged over 100 before this match got too 21 before being trapped in front for 21. Rudolph then strided to the crease and smashed 68 off 51 balls before being run out. Northerns then lost a few wickets to reach a total of 8/332 of 50 overs.

Galle then batted and had a great opening partnership of 98 before Gibbs was removed for 62. Galle looked like it was on track for victory but 333 was always going to be too much as the Galle batsmen couldnt quite make the runs quick enough but made a total of 4/303.

Northerns will look to have another win over Galle next week this time in 4 day in a class between first and last, Northerns will be looking to consolidate there place at the top of the table with a strong win.

I can't believe that horrendous performance from my batsmen. If this continues there'll be some drastoic chnages to the batting line up.
