Round 10 - 4 Day reports

David

International 12th Man
Leics Trash ND to secure 3rd in Div 3 4 Day

Leics were playing only for pride today, being unable to get a chance at relegation or promotion, but needing a win to boost flagging 4 day confidence after being promoted in the one day format.

ND came out to bat and surprised Leics, scoring a healthy 258, Leics bowlers being complacent against the tail. None of the bowlers doing anything spectacular, swain getting 3 with the rest being shared around.

Coming out to bat Leics started well, Lumb and Deitz both getting half-centuries. Bell got a 91, Ponting a 90, whilst the rest were crap. Leics still posting a decent 444.

ND's second innings came and went, that simple. Swain 5-23 destroying ND, leaving them a total of 127, Leics winning by an innings and 59 runs.

Leics manager David now is concentrating on winning the VB cup final, the last hurrah of WCC season 3, and deciding which players to get rid of.

Auckland bowlers give it up

Once more the Auckland bowlers lost the plot. After Richard Johnson (5/48) produced a fine spell of bowling to cut down the 1st innings effort to just 256, the Auckland bowlers failed to exploit the conditions.

Bowler (124) and Thomas (101) looked at total ease in dispatching the lackless attack. Only Hewitt (4/103) really tested the batsmen consistently as Somerset reached 413.

In Auckland's follow up performance, Bulbeck and Morris took four apiece to level the innings at 230 - a lead of 73. Bowler (43*) then led the charge as Somerset sent Auckland to yet another defeat to complete a poor season.

In a press statement after the game:

"I'm just glad it's over. It's been a long and tough season and there haven't been alot of positives. Still I keep hope alive for next season. We've made some tough compromises so far on the trade market. The most significant such trade is that of Howarth who had a fine season with us and he will be missed."

Warwickshire deat Worcestershire by 7 wickets.

batting first worcestershire made an ok 284 with Ramesh and Smith adding 157 for the first wicket. After them no one troubled the Warwickshire bowlers.

Warwickshires response was not very good at all. A gutsy 73 from Anderson saw them reach through to 7/209. Thing were looking sh.t, and when the final pair were at the crease the score was 222/9. Lawson has made a sh.tload of ducks this and nothing much was expected from him. The Worcestershire bowlers then got lazy and let Lawson make an amazing 21. With help from Gregson (23*), Warwickshire reached 279. The final pair added 57.

Worcestershire second innings began much like the first began. Wicket tumbling left, right and centre. At 147/7 it appeared they had given up, but an inspiring innings Kaluwitharana and Akhil saw them make 285.

Needing 294 Warwickshire made a crap start losing Sriram and Anderson both on 38. Worcestershire fought a victory was coming after 8 games without a win. However Howarth continued his purple patch of form with a solid 115* as he, Ali (39) and Hemanath Kumar (77*) saw Warwickshire reach the score was only three wickets.

Again though the batting only went Warwickshires way in the second innings. Crucial bonus point were again missed in the first innings.

Dispite winning Warwickshire didn't do enough to take the title as Tasmania claimed it by 3 points. Well done Tassy.

Warwickshire now face off with Hampshire for a place in division 2 next season.

Qld finished off a poor four day season with another loss to NSW. Qld batted first and could only get to 204. Flintoff topscored with 47 and McGrath took 5/47.

In reply NSW managed 371. Kallis 117 and Lara 74 got good scores while Kasprowicz took 4/92.

Qld's 2nd innings was better bowled out for 360. Hayden 107 scored his first century in a disappointing season. Fogen 66 and Hussain 56 chipped in.

NSW got the target only losing 2 wickets.

Qld must summon up the strength to win the playoffs in both one day and four day comps against English sides. It will require a big effort to stay up in both forms. Form is certainly not with us.

Comets lose, But still win title

Having already secured the 4 day title ACT played an experimental line up, with Bowlers Ramage and Mann getting top order hits.

Although losing by only 1 wicket to 3rd placed Karachi we were pretty happy with the effort. Dawn scored 59 and 59. Dawson and Hatton hit half centuries and Mann took 8 wickets.
With 5 regulars left out we could have won the match, but life goes on and we look foward to this weeks 1d clash for the Mark Waugh shield with New South Wales.

Comets player of the year points went to 3 Mann 2 Dawn 1 Maxwell

Canterbury Win Division 4 Title

Canterbury claimed the division 4 title, in what has to be one of the closest finishes in WCC history. In the end only 5 points separated the top 3 teams, with Canterbury and WP tied on 1st with 110 points each, only for Canterbury to win on a count back. Going into the final round the only chance Canterbury had of winning the title was for them to beat Victoria and WP to beat Colts, which is exactly what happened. WP ended up with an easy victory over Colts, while Canterbury beat Victoria by 100 or so runs, with Chanderpaul scoring a century in each innings.

LANCASHIRE CLINCH PLAYOFF BERTH WITH WIN OVER TAMIL NADU.

Lancashire batted first and put together 288 thanks to R.Dravid (73no), A.Schiller (45) and K.Sullivan (44).
A.Razzaq was dynamite with the ball as he took 7/82.

The Tamil Nadu batsmen also found the going tough with T.Arasu (80no) and M.Samuels (51) the only contributors of note as they fell just short of the home side’s total at 276.
S.Harwood (4/62) received good support from M.Rice (3/64) as Rice continued to push his claims for a spot in the 10 players to be retained ahead of K.Sullivan.

At 144/7 in their second innings, Lancashire looked to be in deep trouble, but the youngster O.Beasley (80) and spin bowler M.Pushpakumara (58) put on 122 for the eighth wicket to see their side through to 277. M.Walker (46) played the only other innings of note.
M.Shrinivas (4/84), D.Ganesh (3/63) and A.Razzaq (3/66) all did their part in keeping their side in with a chance of chasing a reasonable fourth innings victory target of 290.

However, Tamil Nadu’s second innings effort was feeble as they crashed to 123 all out with opener S.Jayasuriya (31) top scoring.
The four main Lancashire bowlers all bowled accurately to secure their side a promotion playoff – S.Harwood (4/51), M.Rice (2/11), K.Sullivan (2/13) and M.Pushpakumara (2/41).

Lancashire – 288 and 277
Tamil Nadu – 276 and 123

Win to Lancashire by 166 runs with hotly pursued S.Harwood man of the match.

nsw keep there div 1 spot

with a must need win over arch rivals qld , nsw had to win or atleast gain 4 points to stay out of relegation position.

with a win nsw finished 3rd, along way away from 1st and 2nd but it see's them continue to stay in the premier division.

good allround performances by the 2 senior players that have carried the nsw batting order all year where kallis and lara.

mcgrath decided to turn up and took 8 for the match in his 2nd last game for the blues with his last being against act in the mark waugh shield, this weekend.

set 190 odd to win in the 2nd inings nsw did it easy passing with 8 wickets to spare.

in a much anticipated game, nsw said goodbye to two of the senior members who have decided to hang up the pads in g kirsten and s warne.
nsw management and staff would like to thank these players for there proffesionalism and great sportsmanship with the blues and wish them good luck in the future, with s warne taking on a junior development role within the club to accompany mark waugh.

SOMERSET STAY D4!

I'm not going into detail of this match as i am so happy and relieved. To sum up:

*Somerset beat Auckland by 9 wickets
*The win keeps Somerset up in Division 4, without relegation playoffs
*Somersets win also sees off Victoria

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I am very happy with my teams performance. Bowler and Thomas were brilliant and fought hard to keep us in this division. This also sees Thomas become even more a target with that great hundred. Well done boys, now lets regroup and win the relegation playoff!"

Congrats to Richs Kent Team for beating me fair and square after a long losing streak... We were forced to follow on and lost without any pride.. after doing real bad in a division 2 were we were just out done by the other stronger teams..

We are glad to be up there for 1 season but look forward to playing Warwickshire for the spot.. rumor is that hampshire is more than glad to play in div 3 where it might find it easier and more suitable to compete.. but sulks at the chances of not facing kent again..

A new revamped hampshire will take on the field next year.. and hopefully ive made the right moves so far..!

Province Prevail in Clash of Titans

The scene was set for one of the greatest clashes in WCC history, between two teams playing for the glory of the division 4 title, 2 old foes, Colts and Province, mate verse mate!
History said Province has the upper hand, however on paper the might of Colts looked good.

Province won the toss and went into bat and a dog fight followed. The tension was amazing as Province would appear to pull away from Colts then the Colts bowling would reel them back in. At 7-243 it appeared that Colts had won the edge for the first time in the game, however some wonderful fighting by lower order bats Gary Yates and Ishmael Nelson both posting good 40's saw the game swing back onto even keel as Province finished up with 345 (interestingly enough no 50's were scored with 6 40's).

Colts then came out looking to go past this score. Shewag, Province bound next year was dismissed early by Nelson and Katich shortly followed as Province looked to take control. The innings never really gained any momentum, with Beasley the only one to go past 50 with 59. Nelson (4-67), Yates (3-22), and Lee (2-61) all bowled brilliantly to contain a hugely powerful Colts batting line up. Colts were eventually dismissed for 203 and the Province attack had got the measure of the Colts batting again.

Rabbi Llewellyn then went about in classic style with Mark Richardson as both compiled dazzling centuries. The brut pace of G Shaw and cunning swing of Beasley weren't enough to stop the pair as they compiled a 254 opening partnership enough to put the Colts side out of the competition, it would take a mammoth effort for them. When the pair were both dismissed the carnage continued with Laxman and Rickman both compiling wonderful 50's, to take the score to 2-401 (declared).

Colts were then desperate to take a draw, however the aggressive bowling of Nelson and Lee saw Colts dangling at 2-0. There wasn't a rear guard action to follow as Colts were eventually dismissed for 184.

Province took the 15 points at replaced Colts at the top of the table but news had just arrived that Canterbury had also taken 15 points from their game.
Both Canterbury and Province were advised that the WCC governing commitee were having a private meeting to decide the fate of the division.

Unfortunately the decision was made that Province would have to play in a play off, even though they had tied with Canterbury due to previous clashes with Canterbury involving bonus points.

"Today's game was our best of the season, we knew we'd have to meet Colts with our best form, in my opinion they are one of the top 5 teams in WCC. It's a big statement but their batting is just so deep and they have a couple of real stars with the ball, they have been the most unluckiest side this year, and deserve more, we wish them the best next year in division 4. We still have a big job to do, to go out and beat Worcester and Canterbury next week and go play division 3 cricket next year in both forms, It will be a busy week but we're up to it"

Yorkshire Look to New Season

After the mighty Panthers won the flag Yorkshire were inspired not to let the all conquering SA go through the season without a blemish.
A draw was a great effort. Even though we looked like we should have won it.
With a young team we should be able to fight for a top spot in the next two or three seasons.

Jason Pike the Manager of the Phoenix and also avid supporter of the Panthers spoke "everyone thought we had a chance through the season and we showed we can be a handful but now experience is being replaced by youth and anything can happen....look at the mighty panthers."

Tsmania thump Glam

I will not go into any details as I lost by 424 runs.

Manager Craig: "Absolutely dreadful. They didnt show up today and batted and bowled very, very poorly. No further comment except that they will paying for their airfares back to Glamorgan as punnishment."
