Well this England series could have a big say on the rest of his career, another loss in England (highly highly unlikely) could call time on his captaincy. Very few Australian captains have played in the side since losing the job, that said it also depends on his personal form, he should really hit a lot of runs in England this time so I imagine he'll play till the next world cup. He's definitely past his peak, you can see it in his batting, the footwork isn't quite as quick and he doesn't seem to pick up length as quickly as he used too. There isn't really anyone knocking on the door as a potential no.3 in tests so he doesn't really have any pressure on his place.

I think he'll bounce back, but I don't think he'll ever be quite the player he was around middle part of the decade when he was really dominant.

As age crawls upon him, the hitherto hidden technical deficiencies. which were camouflaged by quicksilver hand-eye coordination are coming to the fore. The worse aspect is that it has come at a point when Australia's dependence on Ponting as a batsman has increased. However, considering the quality of the player, and the state of affairs English cricket is at the moment, I think he will have a field time in the Ashes.

been getting out to some really poor shots of late.

since the start of the New Zealand test series he has been out cought on the hook or pull about 10 times.
I doubt he had been out playing that shot so much in his entire career up untill then!

Yeah, i noticed that. Ponting's excellent at hooking and pulling, and probably as a result of that he sometimes gets out looking to play it when it's not really there or too early in his innings when he hasn't judged the bounce yet. Classic case of a strength becoming a weakness.

He's even been out playing it while well set.

A couple of times in the 80s and twice in the 60s as well.

I don't think it's really that the ball has not been there so much as that the timing of that shot has been off, but usually it's been when he has tried to really go after it and clear the fence. Something which again is normally not a problem for him.

He needs to get his wrist fixed but since hes captain he cannot take a long break.

2 week avatar bet - Ponting to average over 50 in the Ashes. Anyone?

Everyone said Sachin was past it a couple of years ago. Look at him now. You can't predict these things with players of this quality. Ponting will come good and smash the English out of the Ashes.

Tendulkar is different from the rest, his technique is perfect and his knowledge without par. If you look at his career except for a few injury affected years he's been incredibly consistent, he hasn't really had any peaks or troughs in test cricket. Ponting and most other batsmen over the years have tended to have spectacular peaks during their prime and have then tailed off a touch towards the end, this is what Ponting is undergoing now. Ponting's technique while very good has had flaws throughout his career but they were compensated for by his incredibly fast footwork and great eye. However age spares no man, his footwork was bound to slow a bit eventually (and it doesn't have to slow much at this level) and any player will tell you the eyes are the first to go. All that said I'd still back him to score tons of runs in England.

Ponting might score some decent runs in England but I don't think he will enjoy the kind of success he did when he was in the midst of a purple patch.

This is really Ponting's first bad season in last ten years. Surely he is entitled to have a bad year.

Here is how he has fared in all seasons since his Test debut. For ease of comparison I have not taken the English summers as a season and clubbed them back to the previous Aussies or SAfrican or Subcontinental season.

Season M	Inns	NO	50s	100s HS Runs Avg[/B]

Ponting has been more consistent than almost all his contemporaries and that is a fantastic achievement. One season just under 40 after ten years is not something to worry about. I am more worried how Australia's fortunes as a team may effect him rather than any real worries about his batting.

Of course he is not getting younger but he should outlast Sachin unless Cricket Australia acts hastily which wont be wise in these circumstances.

Well, Ponting is a little different, insofar as he has endured both incredible peaks and notable troughs in his prime. For instance, he had a phenomenal 2002-2003, a sub-par 2004 and an outstanding 2005-2006. Right now, he is in sub-par form (by his standards in Test's and by anyone's in ODI's).
