Reon King

State Regular
Hi all,

I'm just wondering where he's vanished to? He seems to be nowhere near the Windies Test or ODI teams yet both his Test and ODI bowling stats are pretty good, so why isnt he any closer to the Test team? Currently playing for Northerns in South Africa it seems.

Just wondered where he's gone? Does anybody know? He just seemed to vanish from the International Arena and i'd be interested to know if anyone knows why or anything?

Cheers,
Lee

Also, what has happened to Franklyn Rose?

King, Rose, Lawson and Dillon would be a good attack.

Franklyn Rose had a couple of games for Surrey last year, but he`s getting on a bit now. He had a poor series in England in 2000, and lost out to younger contenders.

Merv Dillon I think will play again, maybe before the end of the current series.

He spent a long time out injured, which didn't help, and now he's playing in South Africa rather than in the WI domestics - and WI require that you play in the domestic tourney if you want to be selected for the WI team.

Cheers,

Mike

And a pretty awful tail!
The current tail isn't exactly something to shout about! Best is the only one who can hold a bat and he's very hit and miss. Rose had a bit of batting talent, as did Nixon McLean, but both were very inconsistant with both bat and ball. I guess the best tail you could hope for would be either Nagamootoo or McGarrell, followed by McLean, Rose and Best. Not amazingly strong in bowling but their batting could add either 70odd or nothing quite easily.

rose and king were last seen in the international arena against england in 2000....both were really hammered in that series as most of the batsmen waited for walsh and ambrose to finish their spells before taking king and rose to the cleaners. reon king was an effective bowler in the west indies and definetly a better bowler that sanford or collymore

True.

Makes me wonder why Vasbert isn't in there - he's more capable than most of his rivals IMO.

Maybe because WI pick bowlers as bowlers, not batsmen...

(although, seeing as they've persisted with Sanford...probably not.)

You beat me to the response. Best bats at 5 for his club though. :P

Interestingly enough he took 8 wickets at 30.5 in that series with a SR of 50.3. Not quite hammered. Also, he was injured during that tour (hence he bowled less than 67.1 Test match overs.

And the final correction...

Reon King was last seen on the international arena in 2001 in Zimbabwe when he took 8 wickets at 27.12, with an econ. of 2.59 and SR of 62.7. Not too bad.

That's not why he's not in the team though.

Reon King got injured in England in 2000 and never really recovered from it. He returned with an action that was but a shadow of the smooth display it used to be. He never had the pace or accuracy he used to and, as such, never reached the heights he did before.

King returned to play regional cricket last season, but struggled for consistency and eventually had his season curtailed by injury I believe (not sure).

He then went to South Africa, played a couple of games, then got injured again. Much frustration for a huge talent IMO.

Thats a shame Liam...

I remember him as a tall hostile fast bowler with a lovely action, shame he has faded somewhat...

Although I am tempted to say that even an out of form King would be preferable over Sanford

Drakes or Dillon certainly over Sanford tho....

Shame. I was fairly impressed by him before his injury in 2000.

Ditto that for me.
He always seemed far better than any other bowlers West Indies have tried since Bishop's retirement.
If he'll ever be the same bowler it would be terriffic, but it would be sad indeed to see him play international cricket if he is as much of a shadow of his former self as appears so.
I almost prefer Sanford, Collymore and Drakes to play and get no wickets... at least we know they're all palpably below Test-standard (though of course who knows what Collymore would have been if he too hadn't suffered an injury...)

Well, we'll get the chance to see how much better or worse he is in England this summer: Durham announced today that they've signed him

Collymore is way better than Sanford and Drakes IMO. He's like Hoggard IMO. Accurate and a handful in swinging conditions.

With Best and Edwards in the team, he may be the perfect glue as a solid seamer who can swing the ball.
