Peter May

MexicanRiver

School Boy/Girl Cricketer
Peter May; he had it really tough in terms of conditions. Top 7 average in matches involving Peter May away from home: 26.24

Remember, he played for the team that had a batting line-up of Hutton, Graveney, Compton, Cowdrey, and himself? Adjusted average and top 7 average stats may not always be perfect, but if a top 7 average in matches involving players who played for a great batting line-up is so low like this, then it's clearly down to extremely difficult wickets.

Benaud described him as the best England batsman since 2nd world War.

An exceptional batsman imo. Doesn't really have the longevity to be in the highest echelons but the average stands up really well in the context of the low scoring matches he generally played. I think he's underrated here.

He's an ATG imo. Regarding longevity, he suffered from physical health and was an amateur cricketer and would have suffered huge financial loss. So he retired, and also he retired when batting started to get easier in the 60's.
