Yeah, in the series decider for the most important white ball series of the summer. Allen was clearly only being trialed because the Bangerz are so overmatched in NZ conditions.

It’s been said before but Seifert as keeper hurts the balance of the side. Not a bad player but at the moment there are better options batting in the top 4, and at the lower down he isn’t great at dealing with the quicks bowling at top pace.

Who does Milne come in for? Ideally it’d be Seifert (won’t happen because they won’t risk Conway keeping) or Southee (again won’t happen). Probably need to ditch the Mitchell experiment, revert to a conventional batting order and play five specialist bowlers.

Milne was meant to come in for Sodhi in the Pakistan game but I think I have read that they are going to go for horses for horses sake depending on the pitch.

Phillips could keep, couldn’t he?

Nope, injury issues mean he's probably never going to do it again.

The only thing holding it back from being Conway is his ability to keep to spin, but even then Seifert isn't that flash. Thing is, in this squad it's either Seifert or Chapman, and in that case I think most of us are happier with Seifert.

Yeah just don't give Southee death overs. But other than that, can't say didn't see this coming. Batting really is the weak link. If Mitchell was sent to provide a quick start, then that backfired. I'd have let Conway continue tbh. Didn't help that Ferg was out, but that crack was somewhat papered over by (the last overs aside) the rest. I wonder why Mitchell is in if he's not bowling? He did alright considering, but still, what's the reasoning here?

Would've really liked Latham in the squad tbh :/ Now I can't see a better XI (esp wrt batting) from the current squad.
A wise man did plump for Latham in the squad (me, one of my rare selectorial positives before the Bangladesh tour).

Southee shouldn't get death overs and to be fair, if Ferguson hadn't been injured he wouldn't have got them. Hopefully Milne gets the job against India.

In terms of the batting flop I think it's worth noting that Pakistan have the best attack in the world in this format. If you want to win the tournament you need to be able to make some runs against such a team, but I don't think it should have been much of a surprise given how much of an unknown what exactly NZ's best batting lineup actually is.

No doubt that pakistan have a good attack but are they really THE BEST in the format? Rauf and hasan commonly go for huge runs, shadab has barely been able to pick a wicket in the past 2 years and imad isn't a great 5th bowler.

In UAE? Absolutely. Imad is a pretty decent 5th bowler. King of the darts. Him and Shadab apply the spin choke pretty well. Hasan Ali and Haris Rauf have seemingly swapped places at the moment but both pick up wickets. In between the containing spinners and the attacking pacers it's a pretty well balanced attack. Oh and Afridi. Hafeez and Imad is probably as good as you can reasonably expect your 5th bowling option to be.

Bit subjective but IMO australia, and sa both have stronger overall attacks and arguably sri-lanka. Not saying Pakistan's attack is bad, just not "best in the comp."

NZ had a better chance yesterday than they may have thought initially I guess. The dew was a lot lesser and/or the pitch was so slow that even the quickened up pace off the wicket due to the dew was still slow enough to defeat a lot of the shotmaking. I mentioned in another group that 140 would be a matchwinning score and it almost was. Southee and Santner bowling in the last 5 is never ideal, I guess.

Pakistan almost lost a game they should have walked but the performance of Asif Ali is a very good sign for them. The specialist batsman at #6 is a very hard slot to lock down and if this guy can be good, they have found a solution to a tough problem as far as LO cricket goes. Still not a fan of starting games at 6 PM when dew is such a big factor. The one good thing about night T20 games was that dew had almost the same impact on both sides, but this is being lost coz of having to cater to the timezones. :(

Yeah, agreed. Unfortunately our issue in T20 especially but also in 50-over cricket sometimes is our batsmen aren't good enough or proactive generally to knock good bowling off its axis. Finn Allen is exactly what this side needs going forward. Obviously Kane and Devon have their place, but guys like Gup, Phillips, Mitchell, Seifert etc, you bowl hard length they're not going to generally hurt you.
