One Day Round 3 Match Reports

Mr. P

International Vice-Captain
Somerset have continued on their merry way in the quest for the division 4 title, with a comprehensive win over Jamaica, who went into the match as favourites. After compiling 265 in their dig, Somerset went about restricting the Jamaicans beautifully and winning easily in the end.

Batting first, the Somerset batsmen looked settled from the start. The top 3 Beasley, Donald and Elahi all made 50's on the way to a competitive total. Donald in particular was impressive, his 94 coming as a relief after a poor start to the season.

In reply, the Islanders never got going in a supremely economical effort by Somerset. Despite the fact that they only lost 5 wickets, Jamaica took until the very end of the game to boost their run-rate past 4 per over. A good win for Somerset:)

Anywho, i'm happy with how the team is going, however disappointing FC cricket may be at the moment. Next week is a test of character in FC away against Canterbury. If we win, i'm aiming for promotion in FC, if we lose, im aiming to stay up.

Should be interesting...

A lovely sunny day at the MCG, and the ground staff had prepared a shocker. With moist patches left from where Harwood and the two Harveys had drooled in the morning, Captain Moss had no trouble inserting the Colts.

Harvs and Moss opened, and the Colts looked solid, until at the 7th over Harwood took the ball. Shane took 7 for 16 to destroy the Colts middle order, including twice being on a hat trick.

Bowled out for 68 the colts were forced to set aggressive fields. But alas the daemons that once haunted the pitch were now gone, and the Bushrangers chalked it up in 12 overs.

Harwood Man of the Match, in the pub by 2pm, nice game!!!

Karnataka Manager Bows Out With Loss
Flat Bangalore Pitch Outdoes The Team

A massive century from Anderton sent Lancashire back in title contention in division 1 as Karnataka failed to defend 288 for 7 at home. After Sanjay Borde and Vijay Wadekar had paired up well for the fifth wicket, the home crowd was hopeful, but Aditya Jones didn't find the same sting with the ball as he did before, and Wadekar's spin was thumped out of the ground. Anderton ended with 174 not out off 127 balls as Lancashire cruised to the target with six wickets and more than seven overs to spare, and there were rumours that Karnataka's fielders were ordered to deliberately field poorly so that Karnataka wouldn't run away from South Australia, Mørk's new team, in the title fight. These were valiantly denied by the manager, however, who claimed that "Lancashire were the better team today - hats off to Anderton, he played a stunning knock."

SA fall further into trouble as manager departs

In a sad day for this great club, SA were unable to chase a moderate 244 for victory at the Adelaide oval. It was confirmed just a day before the match that manager Simon Fitzsimmons would be leaving to take up a new challenge with ND, the team tried their best but were unable to come up with a win.

The Redbacks bowlers again lacked penetration but kept the score low enough to give them a chance. Former SA batsman L French made 60 for Kent and O Hemp with 56 also got amongst them. Only Nisar 2/33 and Anderson 2/47 can be happy with their bowling efforts.

The chase was poor. Only Adam with 79 not out and captain Midlane with 36 played well. Hawkins and Mpfou took a couple of wickets each, but it was a 8 run win to Kent.

Only his departure Simon Fitzsimmons had very little to say except for wishing good luck to new manager Hakon Moerk and saying he believed the changed would be good for the Redbacks and they could go on to the the 4d and 1d double now.

Tasmanian Seamers Destroy Mashonaland

Mashonaland's nightmare start to the one day season continued this round as they were humiliated on their home turf by the Tasmanian pacemen. On a scorchingly hot Zimbabwean day, the bowlers, especially the Tassie seamers, dominated, allowing only 253 runs to be made.

On a pitch that seemed to offer little hope to the bowlers, Tasmanian captain Goodwin won the toss and decided to bat. Ramanayake got Mashonaland off to a good start, taking a simple return catch from opener Charlton after inducing the top edge on the second ball of the game. Banks (28 off 51) and Goodwin (33 off 66) dug in for a long, careful partnership before Goodwin was run out from a sharp direct hit from the covers after attempting a quick single, and Banks was bowled soon after by Sami. After Arnold sent Rudolph on his way for one, Rowell (21 off 50) and Canning (42* off 77) steadied the ship and resisted the Mashonaland bowlers while putting on perhaps the decisive partnership of the match. Spinners Burns and Mushtaq started extracting some turn, however, and Burns had Rowell caught in the slips, before Mushtaq followed with 3 quick wickets. Hardwick, the number 10, showed the batsmen how one is supposed to bat in the one-day game, dominating his partnership with Canning and cleanly hitting his way to 24 off 23 before Sami finished off the rest of the innings, taking two consecutive wickets with the final two balls of the innings. Tasmania finished with 165 all out, thanks to Canning's 42. Bowling honours went to Sami (9/3/33/3) and Mushtaq (10/3/37/3), whilst 32 year-old Arnold showed the importance of experience, his 10 overs going for 25/1.

Mashonaland got off to a shocking start, losing their first three batsmen for five runs or less each. Arnold and Petal were both bewildered by the swing generated by Canning, the Tasmanian batting hero, and Pascoe, whilst Ul-Haq could only manage a meagre 4 off 25 balls before being caught plumb in front off a slower ball from Charlton, who also quickly polished off Eaton for 2, and without warning Mashonaland had lost 4 batsmen for only 28 runs. Carver and Malik tried to wrest the game, but with little avail. Given a reprieve on 10 after being caught off a no-ball, Malik took his time to make his 20 runs, as did Carver for his 25. Tasmanian bowler Rice had Carver caught in the deep, and Hardwick trapped Malik in front. The tail attempted to wag, but failed miserably, Canning making short work off Burns and Andrew in the first over of his second spell. Symonds came on to claim the last two wickets, but by then Mashonaland had already given up hope, and were all out for a miserable 88 runs from 30 overs. Canning claimed 3 wickets from his 7 overs, and Charlton's 8 went for only 20/2.

Mashonaland manager Andyc was visibily horrified by his team's performance.
"You know, I'd really expected them to pull through this time. Our batting line-up was a lot stronger than theirs, but the Tasmanian bowlers just got the better of us. Back to the nets for us, I guess."

Tasmania 165/10 after 50 overs
T Canning 42* (77), G Banks 33 (66)
K Sami 9/3/33/3, S Mushtaq 10/3/37/3

Mashonaland 88/10 after 50 overs
Q Carver 25 (44), SD Malik 20 (50)
T Canning 7/3/26/3, N Charlton 8/2/20/2, Symonds 1/0/3/2

Man of the match: T Canning

Chittagong 258-8 defeated Barbados 253-5 by 2 wickets.

A close game saw Chittagong extend their solid start to the season in a topsy turvy encounter in the Caribbean. Barbados had first use of a slow but unresponsive pitch, an opening stand of 91 setting the tone for a hard spell in the field for the Chittagong bowlers. It was perhaps Will Jefferson's ponderous 33 from 65 balls that eventually cost the Barbadians the match though, as his opening partner Guneratne hit the match's top score of 86 from 84 balls. Pietersen and Kotak hit half centuries without really cutting lose, and Haylett, who threatened to accelerate the rate with his 17 from 10 balls, was run out by a superb piece of fielding by Indulkar. Chittagong used 7 bowlers, with N Sharma by far the best, taking 2-38 from his 10. Barbados scored a decent 253-5 from their 50.

The chase began badly with Kotak trapping Indulkar on the crease for just 2, but Madurasinghe gave some impetus to the innings with a quick 30. When he was dismissed with the score at 52, Winstanley went into overdrive, with Fanning, his partner, scoring just 12 in a 63 run partnership. From 115-2 though, a mid innings collapse threatened to seal the game in Barbados' favour. Falling to 181-7, still needing 73 with only Hurley of the recognised batters left, the odds were against Chittagong. Yet Hasan, who had earlier played little part with the ball, contrived to partner Hurley in a 69 run stand which took them to the brink of victory. When he was out, skying a catch to long on, just 4 were needed. Hurley, having crossed with Hasan, hit the next ball for 2, and followed up with a towering six back over the bowlers head to seal victory, finishing 60 not out from 55 balls.

Another good win from the unfancied Bangladeshi side, with 4 in 5 in all competitions this year the future looks bright.

4 In A Row As Leicestershire Defeat Western Australia

Leicestershire won its 4th match in a row today by comfortably defeating Western Australia in Perth by 8 wickets. The match started on schedule infront of an impressive crowd all hoping for a Western Australian win as WA batted first. WA started strongly seeing off the opening bowlers before losing their first wicket at 1/28 as C Burns departed from a screamer of a catch from Underwood off Gallage for 21. Parker and Evans continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over but were again set back when they lost Evans for 18 off Kingsley and losing another 4 runs later with a very good delivery by Kingsley trapping Emerson infront leg before. From there the WA heads dropped as Leicestershire tore them up taking the last 4 wickets of the match for 8 runs to give only a mere 130 runs for victory. All of Leicestershire's bowlers contributed each taking at least a wicket with the best of the bowlers going to Kingsley with 3/38 off 10.

In reply Leicestershire were put on the back foot early with the loss of Brindell for 7 off Sullivan leaving Leicestershire at 1/13 which brought Underwood to the crease. In his past 12 one day matches Underwood had made at least 50 runs a game and once again looked promising as both he and Bradshaw piled on the runs. With another 50 well and truly insight and the runs remaining quickly decreasing, Underwood decided to take a risk and try and maintain the strike but a wonderful piece of fielding sent all three stumps flying as Underwood was run out for 33 off 30 balls. At 2/79 the game was well and truly in favour of Leicestershire but the captain Piggott along with Bradshaw continued to make sure there was no batting collapse and managed to knock off the required runs in 23 overs. Bradshaw finished up 60 not out in a very sensible innings as Leicestershire cruised for another victory making it 4 in a row in as many weeks. The best of the home teams bowlers was Sullivan taking figures of 1/25 from 5 overs in what was always going to be a difficult task with only defending 129 runs.

The win now puts Leicestershire into 2nd place on the division 3 one day table after 3 rounds and now looks ahead to a fortnights time when they take on top of the table and last years division 4 winner ACT at home in round 4 of the one day season in which promises to be a cracker of a game considering the form of ACT at the moment.

Final Score

WA 129 (33 overs)
U Parker 26 (46)
R Kingsley 3/38 (10)
I Gallage 3/40 (9)

Leicestershire 2/133 (23 overs)
I Bradshaw 60* (67)
I Underwood 33 (30)
J Sullivan 1/25 (5)

Leicestershire by 8 wickets

Kent record 1st OD win off the season against South Australia, to get their OD season back on track. The boys once again got a below par score 243 but every good defensive bowling by our spinners got over the line by 9 runs. The stand out performances bat for Kent were Hemp (56), French (60) and Muzumdar 52* off 42. All the bowlers bowled quite well except fast bowler Olney, 0/70 off 10, but lucky the other made up for his shocker. Dave was the pick of the bowlers with 1/28 (10), which include 5 over useful maidens at the end of the Redbacks innings.

Overall were quite happy with the win, but the team recognises that we need to score our runs faster at the top of the innings. The slow starts our not allowing us to score big scores and really put the pressure on the other teams. It likely that Muzumbar is going to be moved up to the top of the order, to try and solve this problem.

The team is looking forward to try and get their 3rd straight victory in a row, once again we play the Redbacks, but under their new manager Hakon. The manager MVP points for this week went to:
3) A Dave: 1/28(10)
2) A Muzumbar: 52(42)
1) L French: 60(94)

Karachi Won their 3rd straight OD match and remain unbeaten for the season in either form. Great batting by Manhus, and very good bowling all round from Karachi gave them the upper hand all day.

Gauteng continued their good work in both forms by blasting out Galle and chasing their modest total. I'm a bit upset though that I lost six wickets. A win's a win though.

On a pitch offering plenty of help for the seamers, and with neither team possesing a particularly strong batting line-up, this match was always going to be a low-scoring affair.

Murray Goodwin won the toss, and elected to make first use of the wicket, backing his bowlers in Mashonaland's dig. Tasmania's first over woes continued, as for the 3rd successive time in One-day cricket they lost an opener, this time Charlton, in the first over, with the score at 0. Ramanayake and Sami were getting plenty of swing with the new ball and Banks and Goodwin shared a steady partnership of 56, before the skipper departed to a brilliant direct hit. Banks followed him shortly after, as did Jacques Rudolph. Canning and Rowell put together another gritty partnership, to take them to 115-5 at the fall of No.5 Rowell. 3 more wickets, Symonds, Pascoe and Bradley fell soon after, with the score on 123-8. Quentin Hardwick then played an entertaining cameo, scoring 24 off 23 balls before he was trapped Lbw by a vicious inswinger from Sami, who dismissed Rice the next ball, leaving Tasmania on 165 all out, Tama Canning top-scoring with an unbeaten 42*(77). For the Zimbabwean outfit Saqlain Mushtaq (3/37) and K Sami (3/33) impressed with the ball.

Even on this pitch, 166 looked like a more than gettable total, but Pascoe got Tasmania off to a great start, taking the wicket of Petal with the last ball of the first over to a magnificent diving catch by Charlton. Arnold was next to go, edging a CAnning inswinger to second slip. Charlton, attempting to make up for his poor batting grabbed the next 2 wickets of Ul-Haq and Eaton. Carver (25) and Malik (20) attempted to steady the ship but they fell to Rice and Hardwick respectively. With the score at 75-6 and 2 decent batsmen at the crease, Mashonaland still had hope until Tama Canning dismissed both Burns and Andrew in the same over. With 2 wickets in hand and 81 runs needed it was a lost cause for Mashonaland, and in his first over, Andy Symonds took the wickets of Ramanayake and Sami in successive balls. Mashonaland totalled 88 and the best bowling performance was by Tama Canning who's 7 overs brought figures of 3/26.

Overall it was a good win by Tasmania, the bowlers excelled themselves but the batsmen still left a lot to be desired.

Alex's Man of the Match: T Canning, 42*(77) and (7-3-26-3)

Cricketer Of The Year
nsw put in poor performance as the points go begging, the opposition batting well with a lower order bat hitting a quick fire 80 odd of 60 odd balls to give the home side the edge nearing 300, nsw in the chase gave up stumps early and never recovered to be all out for 166. after some previous good batting performances from the blues it wasa real shock but some good bowling resticted the blues. trying to put 3 or 4 wins together in a row for the bloved blues is coming hard to crack so back to the drawing boards for the management to see where we can get our season back on track.

Cloete

International Captain
TN chalked up their first win of the season after posting another respectable score, 272 this time. More runs to Cowe(80), taking his tally to 244, a well crafted 92 from just 95 balls from Viv Chandrasekhar and 57* from Clissitt saw them through.

Although being in it for a while thanks to Roberts (79 off 77) the rest of the team was held by some good tight bowling, the first of the season for TN in the OD arena. Auckland ended 250-6 and TN wrapped up a comfortable victory.

With the loss to the colts the div 2 table is wide open, Queensland being the only team who have won all of their games.

Guyana hits out at WCC Board as Guyana crumble to draw

Guyana manager Kyle Wright hit out at the board after his team drew with perrenial under performers Northern Districts. Manager Wright was critical of the boards decision to allow new manager Simon Fitzgibbons to submit a team after the submission deadline had passed. Manager Wright said that although he really had no excuse he wasn't happy with the position he was put in."

"I have nothing against Simon he said he would only make the match 'official' if I agreed, however I am disapointed that the board would allow such an option in the first place, neither Simon nor I should have been put in this situation.

"The board are the people who run and control our competition and they set the rules, they shouldn't be allowing managers to bend those rules. The board sets the deadline of match submissions and I have submitted my team each and every time for over two season now, I don't see why I should be disadvantaged. The Northern Districts' manager resigned after the submission deadline and it should have been points to Guyana, if there had not have been an administrative delay in the start of round three (of the one day competition) it would have been a non-submission, I am very upset." Manager Wright said.

Manager Wright went on to say "I am glad the board are deciding to crack down on submission deadlines, but as far as I'm concerned it is too little, too late, but in saying or players should have been good enough to get the win."

And a match was played as Northern Districts (under instructions by new manager Fitzgibbons over the phone) hosted Guyana.

Northern Districts batted first and were in dire trouble early. The first wicket fell at 15 and regular wickets saw Northern Districts reduced to 5-110 with Satti being the main destroyer as he claimed 3-48 off his nine overs. Nothern Districts were able to recover from their position with three strong partnerships that saw them complete their 50 overs with 8-255, a more than competitive score. Guyana's bowlers were once again not able to clean up the tail as Hussain (58) and Herath 42* were able to give the score a much needed boost. Zulch again bowled with patience and skill beyond his years to claim 2-39 and take his season wicket tally to an impressive 10 wickets.

Guyana's top order again failed ast he visitors were reduced to 5-86 with Aldridge taking 3-52. It was then that Guyana rookie Issac Vernon showed his potential, following his 69* against the might of the Free State bowlers Vernon showed patience and class to amass his highest one day score in WCC of 44 and he combined with McDonald for a 93 run partnership. After a slow start to the season Vernon now has over 100 runs from two innings and is starting to settle in to the extra grade of WCC. Guyana looked all but home as McDonald (84*) and Satti 36 took Guyana within seven runs of victory, before Satti was bowled by Herath (1-38) and when Perrera was bowled for naught Guyana only needed one run for victory and still had 1.5 overs up there sleeve. However, things turned from promising to disastrous, as inexperienced Zulch was run out trying to get the winning runs off the first ball he faced. Then experienced captain Lawson fell in similar, but much closer circumstances again on the first ball he faced. McDonald was left at the other end wondering what was going on and could not hide his disgust as he walked off the field.

Guyana manager Kyle Wright was furious and could be heard screaming that four runs is the difference between his side leading the competition and sitting in a worrying fourth place. The comment was in reference to Guyana's two run loss to Karachi in round one.

Northern Districts will host Guyana in round three of the four day competition and will be relieved that batting superstar Jimmy Jenkins has been sent home for a week to rest a sore knee.

Northern Districts 8-255 (50)

Hussain 58 (89)
R Herath 42 (38)
R Warner 42 (55)
Y Satti 3-48 (9)
D Zulch 2-39 (9)

Guyana 255 (49)
Z McDonald 84* (79)
I Vernon 44 (57)
Y Satti 36 (34)
