Karachi threw away their hopes of a certain promotion and a division win with some very pour last 10 over bowling. The game started well with Louw taking 4 wickets and having ND in trouble at 4 for 56. Then they slowly started to get some partnerships togethe with Holland again making a ton. Karachi then took control with a couple of late wickets to Mishra before B Hussain G Gow took Silva to the cleaners (going for 8.3 an over).

The chase was never going to be easy and with wickets falling at a steady rate we never really had a shot. W Kaye and J Louw got some pride back into the score with 47* and 27* respecitivly. Dissapointing to loose a game especially of this importance but as it turned out WP would have finished top anyway.

Somerset have finished the season on 9 & 1 in OD, after beating Canterbury by 28 runs in what could only be described as a hit and giggle for the Somerset lads who already had the title secure...

Great stuff boys...now to concentrate on getting 2nd place in FC...hopefully we can give Youhana and Fry a good send off in their last games for the club...

Guyana falter against Mashonaland

Guyana came needing a Round 10 win and for the two top teams to lose in order to be in promotion chances. Mashonaland's fifth position was sealed, and as such their key bowler Saqlain Mushtaq had been rested for the match. In front of a Mashonaland home crowd, Guyana, plagued by inconsistency, failed to drive it home to secure a win.

The game started well for Guyana as they batted first. Francis and Vernon opened the batting well, playing cautiously at the start while punishing the bad balls. They put on 91 runs before Vernon was caught on the boundary at 39 off all-rounder Arnold, playing his last one day match for the Zimbabwean side. First drop Jenkins strolled in calmly and started his innings with a thundering drive straight back down the field for four. But his partnership with Francis was only made 11 runs as Francis was pinned in front by Sami for 52. Beasley came in and was content to play anchor to Jenkins as he hit out. By the time Jenkins edged Arnold behind for 43 off 42, the score was on 142. Beasley still continued to score slowly, forcing Ardley to look for quick runs, which he did effectively, picking especially upon the bowling of Andrew, who's 10 overs went for 36. Beasley eventually was out to Sami with Guyana on 219, the batsman only managing 38 off 62 balls. With Beasley gone and the fiftieth over approaching, Ardley started to give it the long handle. He stormed past his half century with a beautiful six off 40 year old Ramanayake, while McDonald at the other end could only manage 8 off 14. The score ended on 266/4, with Ardley on 78 not out off 70 balls.

The Mashonaland pitch is not well known for giving the bowlers much, but that didn't deter Guyana as they bounded onto the pitch ready for the Mashonaland innings. Lawson got them off to a flier, having Malik lbw for only 3. Opener Petal kept on and combined with Durrant, who managed 39 before a leading edge off batting hero Ardley had him out, leaving the home team on 2/86. Petal wasn't long behind Durrant, falling 12 runs later to Lawson for 42. Burns looked in fine form from his first ball, and played a chanceless, run-a-ball innings. Carver failed to provide him with a good partner, however, out to Satti for 19. Arnold, who along with Sami starred with the ball in the Guyana innings, put on a good 37 but played second fiddle to Burns, who was still going strong. Burns especially took a liking to Zulch, him and Arnold taking 61 runs off his 9 overs. Beasley eventually had Arnold lbw, and the score was 5/216, with Mashonaland needing 51 runs off 10 overs. Eaton was happy enough to nudge the ball around, and eventually he and Burns took Mashonaland over the line, Burns on 82* off 82, and Eaton on 17* off 17 with three overs to spare.

In the post match press conference, Mashonaland manager Andyc said, "Deep commiserations to Guyana, being denied a chance at promotion. Our players played well though, despite Saqlain not being in the team. Burns batted magnificently and Arnold put in a great all-round effort. A good end to a disappointing season."

Guyana 266/4
Ardley 78*, Francis 52, Jenkins 43
Sami 2/35, Arnold 2/49

Mashonaland 267/5
Burns 82*, Petal 42, Durrant 39
Lawson 2/37, Beasley 1/49

Mashonaland win by 5 wickets

Leicestershire take opportunity and secure the title

With 3 teams separated by 1 pt going into the final round and with Leics needing a win to secure at worst a top 2 spot, Leicestershire took on Worcestershire. Worcs batted first and were in a spot of both early at 3/30 with Bradshaw taking 2 early wickets. They then rebuilt with a strong innings from Louden to finish 5/221. Leicestershire started shaky with Bradshaw being dismissed cheaply but from there on were in total control as Underwood racked up yet another 50 before being dismissed for 89. McKenzie inclusive paid off as he contributed with 42 from 48 balls and Leics got home by 6 wickets and 11 overs to spare. Then the news came through that ACT had lost to Hampshire and the dream was complete. For the first time in the current manager's history Leicestershire had taken the title. We have the rare chance of taking the double if we defeat Free State next week in 4d whilst on the same note Free State defeated WA and jumped into 2nd spot in the final week of the one day season which dropped ACT out of any chance of promotion and makes them stay in division 3 next season. Leicestershire are already celebrating and look forward to the challenge in division 2 next season.

South Australia Take The Title
Rout In Adelaide

After a decidedly poor season by the South Australian team, who even failed to turn up for the Cup Semi-Final owing to a freak outbreak of measles, was rounded off with a thoroughly professional effort against Håkon Mørk's old side Karnataka. Captain Midlane opted to bat first having won the toss, and despite losing van Jaarseveld and Allen early, Midlane was calm and controlled at the crease. He hit boundaries when the opportunity arose, especially off Vijay Wadekar, whose leg-breaks were wayward, giving the batsmen some trouble whenever he hit the pitch but also including nine wides. While Khan Rangnekar and Nic Adam helped themselves to useful scores, Midlane notched up 91, 32 of them coming off the hapless Wadekar.

Under the lights, Karnataka were set to chase 224. And facing South Australian bowlers at Adelaide is a prospect hardly relished by anyone. Under Mørk, teams have been bowled out for 115, 72 and 83 at the Oval, and another rout came to pass today. After Howarth and Maxwell had negotiated opening spells from Axelby, Anderson and Dros, they were both dismissed by the South African medium pacer, as Karnataka crashed to 73 for 3.

Then followed a testing spell from Sri Lankan spinner Malinga Bandara. Bowling five maidens, he forced the batsmen into suicidal runs whenever they actually hit the ball, and Wilkins and Ali were both run out. Three wickets came to his name as well, as he ended with three for 14, and Karnataka crashed to 83 for 9. Despite batting extremely deep - Vijay Wadekar came in at ten - Karnataka's batting line-up had utterly failed, and James Anderson got the last wicket with a peach of an outswinger that kissed the edge of Wadekar's bat before landing in the hands of Nick Adam at fourth slip - and he was promptly overwhelmed by the entire team. A drought had come to an end, and South Australia are now building for next season, where the team looks to come out only looking for a wicket-keeper.

Western Province Beat One Day Hoo Doo

Things couldn't get any lower for Western Province in the OD form of the game after taking the dreaded wooden spoon. A conserted effort was made over the off-season to rectify this problem and this resulted in a stunning performance which saw them take out the title in a thrilling last round of the OD competition. With four teams realistically going in with a chance of lifting the trophy aloft it was the South Africans at the end of the day who held their nerve in front of a large home crowd.

After winning the toss and batting on what could only be described as a road, Province looked set from the start to stamp their authority. They were able to shrug off the early dismissal of Schofield and set about building a score. Both Zac Birch and Rabbi Llewellyn playing their last game in the green OD colours of Western Province entertained the home crowd with some terrific batting. Both players were creative and elegant in their shot making and as each over passed the trophy was coming closer and closer to home. The pair added a tick under 150 at over a run a ball and laid the platform for a late order assault which came from the likes of Nelson and Tate. Llewellyn however finished the star as he left the home crowd with lasting memories after a very poor year by his standard as he finished with 111 not out as Province put on 293.

The news kept getting better for Province as word came through that Northern Districts had piled on the runs against Karachi, which almost certainly wrapped up second spot. However Province would have none of it as it was the title that they were after. And after Khan blitzed the top order with 3 quick wickets in his last ever OD match the engravers had their pens out with Tasmania on 3-29. Jaques Rudolph attempted to lead a fightback but it was to no avail as Tasmania batted poorly, playing silly shots and at times showing very poor technique. Fittingly it was Thilan Samaraweera, Province's favorite son playing in his last OD game for the club who took the final two wickets sending the home crowd into joyous celebrations as Province got home by 160 runs.

The win gave Province the title as Karachi fell in a heap against ND and Guyana got chased down by Mashonaland.

Slats4ever: "1 more week. Then the lid will certainly come off. The job is only part done, but it was a massive relief to come out of today with a win and the boys thoroughly deserve this. We now have the double on the table and the chance to complete one of the most memorable seasons for any side in WCC cricket, and believe me the mood in the comp is one of confidence as we push on to next week".

With a slight chance of sneaking the title Tasmania travelled to South Africa to take on Table-topping Western Province.

With WP batting first, Tasmania made the best possible start, Canning yorking Schofield first ball. That was to be the high point of Tasmania's match. Birch and Anderson scored quickly, but it mwas after the latter's dismissal when the damage really began. Birch and Llewellyn, playing their last OD match in WP colours took the game by the scruff of the neck, sharing a 146 partnership in good time, punishing Tasmania's woeful bowling. After Charlton trapped Birch LBW, Llewellyn shared a number of short sharp partnerships with the lower middle order, taking the total to 294.

WP came out with tails up, and they were further up after 10 overs, with the top 3 batsmen all dismissed for single figure scores. Jacques Rudolph scored a spirited 53 off 45 balls, but no one else scored more than 12, giving their wicket away once confronted with the ever escalating rate. Usman Sammels thumped 2 sixes in his last OD game for Tasmania, but Samaraweera soon cleaned up the tail. The crowd went wild as they heard that the title was WP's. Tasmania's players left the field dejected, WP's delighted.

WP 293-7 Llewellyn 111*, Birch 86 Rice 3-28.
Tasmania 129 Rudolph 53 Samaraweera 3-36.

WP win by 164 runs, MoTM R Llewellyn

Manager's comment: That was a terrible performance, with bat, ball and in the field, not the way you'd want to and a season. But we've got to look forward to the 4D game with Auckland, putting this behind us."

Adventure comes to end

Warwickshire's life in division 1 one day came to an end after only one season. After topping the table at the end of round 3, fans and players have all agreed that is was the season that might have been. After round 3 success against NSW Warwickshire were only able to play at full strength one more time with injuries striking down key players. Next season, the team is gonna come back stronger, fitter and hopefully better than ever, although division 2 isn't going to be easy.

Heading into the final match, victory was needed over Lancashire to give any hope to finishing fifth. Bulbeck bowled surperbly snaring 4 as Lancashire crumbled to 98/5. But an unbeaten 190 run stand between Sarwan and Munir left Warwickshire facing a daunting 289 to win. Despite the best efforts of Gayle, Dowla and Howarth, the big total proved too much and Warwickshire fell 7 short.

Guyana Manager on Suicide Watch

Friends and family have gathered round Guyana manager Kyle Wright after reports of him being in a very fragile and "possibly suicidal state'. No word as yet if Mister Wright has made an attempt on his life, but the GCB did release this statement earlier today:

"Kyle has worked very hard to build what he believes should be a promotable team, however things have not worked out as he had planned for this season. He has taken the final loss to Mashonaland very hard, especially considering a win would have had Guyana in a promotion playoff. I'm one hundred percent confident that Kyle won't do anything as drastic as committ suicide, as the team have a very important match next week in the four day competition. We will keep you informed of Mister Wright's state if anything develops...thank you."

Bucknor's Blunders see Warwickshire relegated

Steve Bucknor's trigger finger got some practice during the course of this final OD of the season. Warwickshire could have moved off the bottom with a win, but unfortunately for them, Stevey B and his finger of death were out in full force.

The match started well for Warwickshire with Lancs being reduced to 98-5, Van Wyk and Higgs recording ducks, but then Sarwan, playing his final match for the club, came out to join Munir and showed the members in the pit of hate what they will be missing, his 99* came off 89 balls, the last of which he flicked down to fine leg for 2, only for Bucknor to call leg byes. Munir was more sedate in getting to 91* from 112 balls but the total of 288-5 was testing. Bulbeck was the star for Warks but surprisingly didn't bowl his full quota.

Hawking was quickly sent back by Mongia in reply, but fifties from Gayle and Dowla, plus a solid contribution from Howarth, saw Warks cruising at 193-2, when Higgs, or more rightly Bucknor, struck. The ball to Dowla pitched perhaps 5 inches outside the leg stump, but Bucknor had no qualms about that and his finger was raised. A less contentious decision at the other end saw Howarth removed and from then on in it was a struggle for the remaining batsmen. Mongia came back to remove the tail and take five wickets, last man Bulbeck getting a first baller to leave Warks all out just 9 runs short of possible survival.

MOM was a close one between Bulbeck, Sarwan, Munir and Mongia, but Sarwan in the end took the prize, adding the wicket of Kaye, charging down the wicket, to his earlier innings and then spectacularly running out Gregson.

Yorkshire seal 3rd place in One Day competition.
Batting first, the retiring Hamilton and Simpson opened the batting to bid farewell to the team and crowd at Headingley.
Hamilton (22) and Simpson (21) put on 44 before Nawab struck, removing Hamilton and then Tendulkar for a golden duck the next ball. Boxall came in and slogged but Simpson couldn't improve his score, out for 21.

Weir (2) out next and Yorkshire looked in familiar territory at 4-67.
Hemp had made just 4 in a partnership of 27 with Boxall, when he suffered a brain explosion and charged down the pitch, got bamboozled, and popped up a lolly for Hettiarachchi to get him caught and bowled.
Boxall continued his slogging and passed 50 with Laney helping along at the other end in the partnership of 59. Boxall was on 70 when he played a brilliant cut shot which would've been four had there not been a fielder there and he was on his way back to the pavilion.
De Silva (33) joined Laney (43) at the crease and they kept the scoreboard ticking over until the 50 overs was up, making 6 for 215.

It was going to be a hard target to defend, even with TN's poor form in one day.
But it was the day of the old timers with Gough and Hamilton running through the line up with help from Bhandari, Nazir and Boxall, getting Tamil Nadu all out for 127 and Yorkshire confirmed their 3rd position on the ladder ahead of one day specialists the Colts, Auckland and TN.
