Guyana thump Karachi

Guyana travelled to Pakistan to face Karachi for round 1 of the Season 5 One Day match competition. The new look, and widely fancied Guyanan team arrived at the ground fresh with anticipation. Guyanan manger Mister Wright said he was unsure how his new look side would fair, but said he was quietly confident his charges good come away with the two points.

"We have had a very long offseason and have had a long time to prepare. The established players we traded in the offseason have had plenty of time to gel, and the younger players we aquired in the draft have just slipped straight into things, I think we can come away with a win," Wright said.

The two captains went out to the middle for the toss half an hour before play, Guyanan captain Martin Love called his customary favourite of heads, however the coin came up tails and the Guyanan team were forced to field.

It wasn't long before the Guyanan side had their first scalp. Jermaine Lawson (1/25,8) struck in his first over removing Baig for a duck. However Guyana had to wait a fair bit longer for their second wicket, with a 67 run stand between Cole (40, 38) and Hussey (31,22) halting any early Guyanan inroads. Mackenzie (1/44) was the next to strike removing the dangerous Hussey. Ardley (5/25,7) was introduced and quickly made an impact remving Cole with his first delivery. With both established batsman back in the pavillion, Karachi had to build a partnership. Sardesai (15,15) set about taking the initiative away from Guyana with some early power hitting, but after elegantly hitting three boundaries, he was removed by Ardley having his bails removed by the naggging medium pacer. From there Guyana asserted their authority on the game with man of the match Ardley ripping through the Karachi middle order. Love brought back Perrera (2/21,4) to clean up the tail, Swanton (1/0,2) was the other wicket taker. Karachi were bowled out for 117 in 26 overs.

Guyana took to the middle with Ardley on a high after his impressive bowling display and representative player Francis looking to wrap up Guyana's first win in quick fashion. Karachi had other ideas. It took Karachi's opening bowler Mohammad Sami (1/2,3) only two balls to strike, he found the edge of Francis' bat to remove him for a duck. Two oves later Elstub (2/30,5) picked up his first wicket for the season, when he found a bit of late movement to send bowling hero Ardley back to the pavillion for a quick fire 10, Elstub soon removed Guyanan captain Love for eight and Guyana were 3-24 and looking vunerable.

With an 18 year old and 19 year old at the crease, Karachi tried to draw on the batting partners' inexperience to break open the Guyana middle order, with a rookie and lower order players to come, Karachi must have been confident of a surprise victory. However, first round draft pick Jenkins (46*,61) and Season four hero Cole (43*,60) they lead Guyana to their first one day victory for season five, and saved Guyana from a very embarrasing, but not unheard of defeat.

Captain Martin Love said after the game that he was very impressed with his young teams first up victory.

"We came hear as favourites and I guess we ended the day wth a very strong performance that will have the other division five teams looking over their shoulders," Love said.

"This was a very consistent performance by us, and what is most encouraging is that it was our young players who did the job for us. Jenkins and Cole are very promising players for the future of Guyanan cricket and I am just happy to be a part of that.

"We need now to continue this way of playing and take this confidence into the first four day fixture. We will gain the experience of Neil McKenzie and Mahela Jayawardne, so we feel we are in with a good chance with our neighbours Jamaica."

Karachi 117 (26)

O Cole 40 (38)
Z Ardley 5/25 (7)

Guyana 3/118 (23)

J Jenkins 46* (61)
Y Cole 43* (60)
C Elstub 2/30 (5)

FS's First Win Under New Manager

Free State begins Season 5 under a new manager and a revamped lineup. The first challenge for their new manager was against Mumbai in the opening 1D round. This is what the manager Dave had to say about the game:

"We started off very poorly, Williams our opener was gone without troubling the scorers. Leaving us at 1/1 it wasnt the ideal start. Our gun batter Snow, came to the crease hoping to make up for the poor start. Snow and Arendse were just starting to form a partnership when Arendse lobbed one back to the bowler, dismissed for 8, leaving the scoreline at 2/31. Newly Signed Z Court partnered up with Snow, but neither could find success, Snow dismissed for 24, Court gone for 11. Javed followed for 5 soon after, leaving us at a dismal 5/52. With A Swinburn taking 4 wickets for Mumbai.

After thinking we were gone, Hamblin arrived at the crease with De Bruyn and formed a handy partnership, putting on 86 runs together before De Bruyn was caught plum in front by Mumbai's R Telemachus, score was now a little more respectable at 6/138 - but we still needed more to force a contest. A Halse wandered out to the crease with the message to get the strike ticking over and look for boundries - both of which he did. He tore apart the bowling late in the innings to finish on 42* from only 34 balls. Hamblin down the other end completed the rescue job by scoring a handy 80*. Score - 6/220. After struggling along at 5/52, to reach 200 is an amazing effort IMO and a job well done by the lower order.

Mumbai sniffed a victory here, only needing 221 to win. However their innings didn't start the way they planned. Mumbai manager, Nikhil, had been talking up their 'star' batsman during the off season, Sachin Tendulkar. We were a little wary of him opening the batting, but Sachin proved to be useless in this match, getting run out after only facing a ball. The early breakthrough was perfect for us, it sent Mumbai back to the drawing board. L Owen came in and scored a run-a-ball 15 before being trapped in front by De Bruyn. They were 2/15, worse then what we were. They pegged some back on us before losing another wicket - 3/51. Followed up by another wicket, which left them struggling at 4/51 - however, still marginally better then we were at the time. They needed one of their middle order to step up and score a big one if they were to remain any chance. S Roth answered that call and promptly scored a solid 57, however his partners were falling all around him with a steady loss of wickets there was little hope for Mumbai. The 3 Tailenders provided little resistance, scoring 3, 0, 0* respectivly. Leaving Mumbai all out for 156, 64 runs behind our total. Our bowlers spread the wickets around wth De Bruyn taking 3/33 (7 overs), Hazare 2/36 (10 overs) and C Tremlett 2/39 (7 overs). The other 2 bowlers both picked up a wicket each.

J Hamblin picked up the full 3 votes for the WCC Player of the Year, after his 80* and 1/25 (8 overs). Mumbai's A Swinburn got 2 votes for his 4/42 (10 overs) and Roth picked up the final vote for trying to get Mumbai back on line with a desperate 57.

Overall it was a good win for Free State, however we relied on our lower order far too much, next game we need to focus on getting the top order batting in solid partnerships rather then falling down around each other.

Free State 6/220 (50)
J Hamblin 80*(116)
A Halse 42*(34)
Z De Bruyn 38(66)
A Swinburn 4/42 (10 overs)

Mumbai 156 a.o (37)
S Roth 57(77)
Z DeBruyn 3/33 (7 overs)
S Hazare 2/36 (10 overs)
C Tremlett 2/39 (7 overs)

SA travelled to Karnakata for the opening day of the wcc season, New manager Simon Fitzsimmons was looking for a winning start to the campaign. SA won the toss and sent Karnakata in on a fairly good pitch. There was a tinge of moisture so we thought our best chance would be to get the big guns out early.

We were a little disapointed with the bowling innings, they made 8/273 from their 50 overs. Wadekar made a patient half century, while in a contrast of styles Jones smashed a quicker than a run a ball 60 odd. A few other scores in the 40's ment a good score was made, one the SA batsman would have to work hard to make. Of the bowlers, captain Heath Axelby was the pick, the tall left arm spinner grabbed 4/37 from 8 overs. Shane Bond also impressed in picking up 3 wickets. off season recruits Taylor and Graham both struggled, but will be hoping for a better showing in the next match.

A fantastic batting performance from the top order saw South Australia secure a comfortable win. The Highlight was Wicketkeeper David Dawsom hammering 130 from 141 balls. In one of the most impressive innings seen in WCC history he belted 4 huge sixes in his tally, however his innings came at a price, its likely he will now miss 5 weeks with a groin strain. Ben Allen making his debut for SA made 69 from 65, a controversial aqiusision from Kent, he is already displaying the form that has turned him into one of WCC's hottest properties. Vice captain Hagis Midlane also made a fine start to his SA career with a good 55 from 59 balls opening the batting. Used mainly as a number 3 in his tasmanian days, Midlane is now looking to establish himself as a great opener. SA finished 7/277 after being 1/249 at one stage. The middle order have some thinking to do after several of them played some silly shots to put the team into the situation we were. Cush with 4/54 was the only Karnakata bowler to make an impression on the SA batting order. the previously impressive K Ali struggled to finish with 0/57, a poor start on his behalf....

all in all a very impressive start for the defending champions. A 3 wicket win and some good performances from the whole side ment we are already one up on our main challenger for the title.
SA player of the year points went 3 - David Dawson 2 - Heath Axelby 1 - Hagis Midlane

Province Win Blockbuster....

People have been saying for some reaon that Province's season is over before it began... Why? I don't know. Showing real class in defeating one of the best sides in the comp ND it was the perfect start to there run at the title of the most fiercely fought division, division 5.

The ball dominated from the outset with wickets tumbling. The opening quicks from Province lived up to all expectations of being the best in the comp limiting ND to just 100 from the first 15 overs with no wickets down. Samaraweera showed he had a lot of work to do taking just 2 wickets. Western PRovince were over the moon having restricted the might of ND to 302.

Then the batsman looked as weak as ever with Wessels the only one shining with 4. Llewellyn looked like he has a lot of work to do to have a big season after being dismissed for 119 and Rickman and Darden showed that this batting line up is crap as they both only passed 50.

WP's season is officially over after scoring 304 runs in response

 HaHa, you certainly are a comedian slats. 100 off 15 overs is over 6 runs an over, I wouldn't call that limiting...

You will have to do a lot better than that to overcome the Guyana side, because we will bowl you out for around 100. :p
