Thomas, Morris and Bulbeck on fire as Somerset cruise to massive victory
An astonishing and eventful day for the Somerset Cricket Club, who astounded all by compiling an absolutly massive victory over the dumbfounded Tasmanians, demolishing Tassie by 254 runs.
The stars of the day were Z Thomas, moved up the order to score quick runs, and the bwoling combination of Morris and Bulbeck, who took nine wickets between them.
The Somerset innings got off to a good start, Thomas and Adams putting on 44 before Adams (28) fell to Powell trying to hit across the line. Bowler (53) came to the crease and with Thomas took the score to 133. In 54 balls Bowler hit 7 sparkling boundaries and one spanking six. At the other end of the pitch Thomas had just completed his half century, and was begining to look like a man determined to prove his worth.
The bad news just keep coming for Tasmania, all their bowlers looked at sea as Thomas launched into overdrive. He and Kulatunga (40) put on a magical 148, in which Thomas scored nearly all the runs. It seemed fitting that Thomas should hit his century with a majestic cover drive off Gillespie, who had an awful day, grabbing figures of 10-0-72-0. Kulatuga finally went with the score on 281, the bowler being F Akram. R Johnson came and went quickly, out LBW looking to smash a slower ball from Canning out of the ground. But it was all to late as a sublime Thomas finished not out on 153 from 142 balls, one of the best innings of the season. The non-striker was Bulbeck, who made 8.
Guy Kerridge was all smiles during the innings break, but confronted his increasingly rowdy boys by assuring them the game was not over and work in the field had to be done.
Signs were looking good at one stage for Tasmania, the score at 21 and both openers seemed set. But this was the best it got for the hapless Tassies. Morris and Bulbeck procceeded to crush the batsmen for a pathetic 58.
Not much could be said for this innings, except for the wonderful bowling of Morris, overall taking 5 wickets in his 7 overs, and Bulbeck, who had the amazing figures of 6-2-9-4. The only other wicket taker was Caddick, who dismissed the opener Midlane for 16.
After the game, Kerridge was full of praise for his team.
He also made a comment refering to the trade of Thomas.
"Z Thomas is still up for trade, but the expectations of players to be given for him is higher. Email or contact mrponting@hotmail.com for details.
