Kinda the same point though. We don't use them because the conditions don't necessitate them, so they don't get picked. New Zealanders bowl fast because they want to, Australians bowl fast because they have to.
Australians don’t really have to bowl fast. Plenty of Australian fast medium bowlers that have done well in test cricket and locally at shield level. Many touring fast medium bowlers have succeeded here.

Yeah, Cummins, Haze and Boland all operate in the 135kph bracket these days. Cumdawg can crank it if he wants but tends not to.

They're much better at bowling hard length than most and are usually taller than their opposition bowlers. From our perspective, Southee has some height but bowls along the wicket most of the time, Boult is skiddy and obviously Wagner hits the deck hard despite his size. Henry hits the deck harder than Southee/Boult but only became test standard the summer after our most recent Aussie tour.

If the current NZ selection trend of tall quicks (Jamieson, Duffy, Tickner and Shipley are all 6'5+ I believe, at least comparing them all next to 6'3 Southee) is an acknowledgement we need guys who extract a bit more bounce then that is unusually forward thinking of our current selectors.

Kerry O’Keefe got it right when he said you need 2 out of bounce, movement or pace to do well in Australia. Though I suppose that’s true anywhere. Do think a fast bowler is necessary here though, whereas you could get by in England without one.

I'm watching the short highlights on Spark, and admittedly doing it with the sound off...but was there controversy around the non runout on Finn Allen? That looks out no matter how many times I replay it...but then I look at the fielders/batsmen all in position while the decision comes up on the big screen, so there doesn't seem to be any conjecture there.

That's because most bowlers don't have the materials to consistently bowl 140 rather than lack of trying. My point is that for those who can, their efforts tend to be rewarded more than elsewhere hence there's a larger pool.

also I'd be willing to bet your average Aussie "Bog standard fast med" is still capable of bowling around 135-140ish

Would agree the rewards are there but Australian bowlers like Sayers, Copeland, Reiffel had good careers here. Boland, Sutherland, Neser, Bichel and Kaspa rarely get or got out of low 130s and all have good reputations. I think Boland should be a regular in the team although I know some think he wont be as effective in England.

Low key feeling pretty good about nzs depth at the moment. I can't remember a time when we had so many 'decent ' options.
Yeah, there's a lot of people in the media saying the golden age is over, the depth isn't there to replace who we've lost, etc. I reckon there is if we give them a chance ... but some of these players should have been in the system for a while, rather than the 30+ fill-in brigade we play, so it might take them a while to catch up.

The talent is there I think, but mismanagement is our downfall. Great to see the B-side have a result like that yesterday, anyway.

Coming from someone who's been watching this team for as long as I can remember, the bad old days when our players one level down just couldn't cut it or were horribly managed.
Every team goes through a re build but I feel the domestic players are far better now then what we used to produce. I'm not at all worried about the Boult situation or if Wagner is done, the players are there, smart selection policies are all that's needed.

It's more clear from the other side which they don't show in the short highlights. But if you pause on the first frame the bail lights up it's pretty clear there's at least some bat grounded over the line I reckon.
