*Official* New Zealand domestic season 2022/23

Looking forward to seeing how Abbas goes. Interestingly they have picked Nick Kelly as captain. This is something that Bruce Edgar does, he doesn't trust Wellington players to captain I suppose. Edgar was the one that appointed Bracewell as captain. Hoping Kelly doesn't start bowling himself 20 overs a game and Steady picks him too as a spinning all rounder

I do think they should have picked Tim Robinson in the squad the firebirds. It was Tim Robinson everywhere in the firebirds camp last year as he played the last few games and did quite well. This year started from the start of the season and obviously figured out it's a tough gig batting at Basin in the first half of the season. I think Firebirds played most games at the basin the first half of PS. I suppose they should have given him a go in the second half as well if they had so much trust.

I hope they bottle their expectations this year of Abbas. It's not an easy thing to go straight from nationals under 19 to first class cricket. Finn Allen and a lot of players found that out very early unless you are Ravindra and acing at NZ A level but then those kids at least had international U19 experience. We haven't been to U19 international tourney since ages. The gap is huge but here's hoping Abbas plays good positive cricket. His dad will be around the team if he needs any help in any case.

Really cycling through every possible captain aren't they. Since Covid I count 7: Macewell, Colson, Bennett, Johnson, Blundell, Younghusband, Kelly.

Nick Kelly did start out primarily as a left arm spinner

Yeah but the way he was portrayed and promoted on social media, functions etc it felt like they had definitely invested in him long term but then few failures and he was shunned. I'd hope they give him a go again towards the end of the season. He can definitely play, he's not as bad as the numbers portray.

Still can't figure how the likes of Colson and Younghusband ended up captains. They struggle to make the sides at times.

There you go, he'll be the next go to guy for Larsen and Stead. He is a leadership material now too.

I do think he's quite a good player though. I don't think I will be surprised if he starts rolling his arm again. Trend has been set.

What happened to Andrew Fletcher? He had a decent List A record, but an atrocious FC one as I recall. Nailed a few centuries in the one season, but turned out to be a flash in the pan.

Is there any word on Sear's injury? All I've heard is it's a back injury, but he's been out since mid-December so I'm guessing it's pretty serious ...

Definitely not as bad. Back spasms. He's playing club cricket, batting a bit and bowling few overs here and there. One of the hardest working guy in the setup. Injuries are definitely not due to lack of effort but with a bit more strength he should give us 8-10 years of top level cricket. That said he's wasted at first class cricket. By the time black caps call him into the side I'm hoping he's not spent all his pace and energy at this level. He's like Wood, wants to bowl every ball at his sharpest. Doesn't want to leave anything behind.

That's reassuring. Hopefully a change in regime at NZC will give him a shot in the test side sometime before he turns 35.

On that note watched some local club cricket over the weekend. Hutt district were chasing like 100 runs and guess who got them across after having struggled to like 50 for 7? Ben Sears batting at 4 and Ravindra strode to the middle at no 9 or 10 and got over the line with so much class it wasn't worth for club cricket

Sears used to open batting for under 19s if I'm right.

@nzfan have you seen much of Jesse Tashkoff? From the U19 and NZ Development scorecards I’ve seen he seems to be very consistent with both bat and ball. Looks to have leadership potential too

Yeah I have. Comes from the same school as Troy brothers, Sears and Ravindra. Not as consistent but definitely has lot of potential. I think he has one or two hundred at most across club cricket. Good aggressive player and a reasonable left arm spinner. More of a late middle order player that can bowl all right. The NZ development have been playing him way down the order, he deserves better.

Their focus now has gone on to Abbas. He's the new kid on the block now.

Looks like both Canterbury and Otago only have one specialist opener in their squad. I’d like to see Canterbury give Rhys Mariu a go. Did ok for NZu19, scores runs for fun at Hawke Cup level for Canterbury Country and pretty consistent at A level

So rachin has adopted bazzball... scoring 33 at 8 RPO and getting out on the boundary. Reckon bazzball will come alive in our domestic cricket across teams?

Interesting looking cut pitching Dunedin.

I'm trying to work out if anything on a good length will land on the brown part.

They're trying to get some turn going. We'll only know if that does the job when spinners come on. That's the direction nzc is taking now for the second half of the ps
